The Ethereal Barbaresco of Cascina delle Rose
12/30/25 -

Giovanna Rizzolio of Cascine delle Rose is a benchmark producer for the tiny crus of Rio Sordo and Tre Stelle in Neive, Barbaresco. In the 80's and 90's when women did not often farm (especially organically), she developed a name for her family and their land and even started Barbaresco's first licensed agrotourismo. Originally, Cascina delle Rose only farmed in Rio Sordo, but boundaries in Barbaresco were redrawn in 2006 and Tre Stelle was born due to special characteristics. With less topsoil than Rio Sordo, Tre Stelle's vines are in even closer contact with limestone giving the wines their characteristic lithe structure and stony minerality. Giovanna and her sons, who are now running things, are the only growers in this cru! They also acquired a hectare of the renowned Marcorino cru in 2018, increasing their total vines to to 5.5 hectare. Their style has consistently been defined by hand picking, minimal intervention, large barrel aging, and resisting modernization.

Today we are offering six wines from the estate. In addition to the three Barbaresco, we also have their Langhe Nebbiolo 2024, Barbera d'Alba Superiore Donna Elena 2022, and Arneis Mun Cru 2024 (their only white). The Langhe Nebbiolo is a lovely entry to the estate's style. All stainless steel aging preserves the fragrance and freshness of their Nebbiolo letting the fruit and floral notes shine. The Barbera leans more towards plump purple fruit and spice. And the Arneis spends seven days on the skins followed by stainless steel aging, showing jasmine, honey, citrus, and peach.
