Beautiful Wines - and Great Values - from Stéphane Magnien in Morey-Saint-Denis!

Share

For many years we have been working with Domaine Stéphane Magnien (not to be confused with Michel or Frédéric), a small domaine in Morey-Saint-Denis that makes superb, subtle, and old-fashioned wines of terroir from their 4.5 hectares. The domain is proud to say that for four generations they have not used herbicides, using plowing by horse and tractor to preserve the microbial life of the soil and force the vine's roots to descend more deeply, pulling great typicity from the terroir. "Far from 'vins médiatique' you will find in our bottles a subtle wine, well-structured, respecting the terroir and the vintage, with great length on the palate... all in finesse." There is a high percentage of old vines in their parcels, including a great deal of "Pinot Tordu," a small-berried,  aromatic old clone of Pinot - and there is a superb new cuvée Of Morey-Saint-Denis - the "Grains Fins" made entirely from young vines of Pinot Fin. Minimal new oak is used, normally 10% for the premier and grand cru wines, and the wines are bottled without fining or filtration. Hand harvesting, of course, and long, slow wild-yeast fermentations.

We are hoping to get more wine later this winter, but for now we have only one case of the beautiful Chambolle 1er Cru "les Sentiers" and three cases of the floral and elegant Chambolle "Vieilles Vignes," with two to four cases available of the Morey-Saint-Denis village and 1er Cru wines. Happily we have a good supply of the delicious "Coteaux Bourguignons" - the 2017 "Tradition" (formerly Bourgogne Passetoutgrain) and the lush and vibrant 2018 "Pur Pinot." Anyone seeking bargains in Burgundy should buy these by the case - they will provide delicious drinking over the next three to five years!   Wines Arrive Wednesday October 16th

Stéphane Magnien January 2017

Magnien, Stephane 2017 Morey-Saint-Denis 1er Cru Cuvée "Aux Petites Noix"

From two premier crus, Les Gruenchers and Clos Baulet, mid slope in Morey Saint-Denis, giving a slightly fuller wine than Faconnieres. As with all of Stephane's parcels, there is a high percentage of old vines of "pinot tordu." Stephane Magnien is a longtime Chambers  favorite. The 2017 "Aux Petites Noix" has a dark ruby robe. The nose is a touch reserved at first; with an hour in the glass, aromas of black fruits, Lapsang Suchong, mustard seed, and game emerge, with a pleasing cool herbal note lending lift. The palate is mid-weight and fairly concentrated for the vintage—blackberry syrup, dark loamy soil, game, and iron dance around savory mineral core girded by ripe, though somewhat firm tannins. This has good sap and there’s enough sophistication and supple fruit for this to be a pleasure with air (and it is a pleasure), but there’s enough structure, balance, and nascent complexity to warrant 7-10 years of cellaring so that the elements knit. That said, this is just cracking with braised duck legs and olives over  grits, and mustard greens. This is a lovely bottle for earthy, soulful fare and well worth the tariff. John McIlwain

Magnien, Stephane 2017 Morey-Saint-Denis 1er Cru Les Monts Luisants

Situated to the west of Grand Cru "Clos de la Roche," this steep and stony parcel has very thin topsoil over the limestone, with vines from 15 to 75 years-old. The 2017 has a dark ruby robe. Aromas of black fruit, spice box, bramble and sauvage grace the nose with notes of forest floor and a touch of oak. The mid-weight palate offers ripe plum and blackberry fruit flavors, with a crosscurrent of brambly herbaceousness. Nice framing mineral saltiness and ripe tannins, good vibrant acidity. This is vivacious and confidently Morey in character with plenty of charm and enough earthy gravitas to keep things honest. This displays the 2017 charm but with plenty of terroir expression. A delicious Les Monts-Luisants with plenty of upside for cellaring in the mid-term. John McIlwain

Magnien, Stephane 2017 Coteaux Bourguignons Tradition (Passetoutgrain)

From 35-55 year-old vines below the village of Morey-Saint-Denis in deep clay soils, 50% Pinot Noir/50% Gamay (with the new AOC Coteaux Bourguignons replacing Borgogne Passetoutgrain and Bourgogne Rouge). Hand harvested, fermented with wild yeasts and aged 16 months in tonneaux and stainless steel vats, bottled unfined and unfiltered, about 150 cases made. It displays subtle baking spices and birch on the nose, with dark cherry, hickory, and a slight flicker of evergreen on the tongue. The structure is bright and fresh. As designed, this bottle should be paired with family dinners of roasted poultry or braised beef. Considering the coming season, this could be an ace on your Thanksgiving table.

Magnien, Stephane 2018 Coteaux Bourguignons Pur Pinot Noir

The 2018 "Pur Pinot Noir" is the new Bourgogne Rouge produced by the talented Stephane Magnien at his superb estate in Morey-Saint-Denis from two small parcels in the lieu-dit "Gué" below the village, one planted in 1960 the other in 2009, aging for 16 months in large barrels and cuve inox, bottle unfined and unfiltered. The 2018 shows a bright deep red color and exuberant aromas of ripe strawberry, red currant and cherry, lush and floral. The palate is dense with vibrant red currant and morello cherry fruit lifted by bright acidity, sappy and long, finishing with ripe refreshing red fruits. This is a joyful Bourgogne rouge to enjoy over the next five years - it's a great value that will disappear quickly - don't delay!  David Lillie

Magnien, Stephane 2017 Morey-Saint-Denis "Grains Fins"

The Morey-Saint-Denis "Grains Fins" is another new cuvée from Stephane Magnien, and it's an absolutely delicious wine! It's made from young vines of Pinot Fin, in the vineyards of "Bas-Chenevery" and "Crais-Gillon" on gravelly soils. There is a 12-month elevage in mostly old barrels, followed by 4 months in cuve inox - only 200 cases were made. The 2017 "Grains Fins" is a terrific wine, surprisingly structured and dense for a 2017 - perhaps the smaller grapes of Pinot Fin brought a bit more grip to this generous vintage. The wine shows a bright deep red color, with vibrant aromas of raspberry and tart cherry, very floral, with hints of darker fruit and earth. The palate has nice grip and density with sappy red and black fruits, with a chalky texture, leading to a firm and very mineral finish. Enjoy this delicious wine in its vibrant youth, or wait a few years then drink until 2030-2035  David Lillie

Magnien, Stephane 2017 Morey-Saint-Denis Vieilles Vignes

The Stéphane Magnien Morey-Saint-Denis "Vieilles Vignes,"  is from  45 to 65 year-old vines in "Clos Solon" and "Cognés" on clay/limestone soils. The 2017 shows a deep red/black color and is initially less aromatic than the "Grains Fins," then shows dark black cherry and strawberry confit with hints of spice, roast meat and licorice. The palate is dense and sappy with deep strawberry and black cherry fruit, quite dense and long with hints of mint, stone and bitter chocolate, finishing with firm acidity and saline minerals. This offers superb quality for a "village" Morey-Saint-Denis and will repay 3 to 5 yars of cellaring, then drink until 2035.  David Lillie

Magnien, Stephane 2017 Morey-Saint-Denis 1er Cru Les Faconnières

From a parcel of old vines grown in Les Faconnières, one of the best situated climats in Morey-Saint-Denis, located beneath Clos de la Roche and between the Millandes and Charrières premier crus. The 2017 shows a deep red/black color, with  earthy aromas of black cherry and blackberry, earthy and meaty with violet and a bit of southern "garrigue." The palate is rich and ripe with black fruit liqueur and hints of licorice, lemon zest and earth.  The finish is expansive, mouthwatering, gamey, mineral, and long, with fine persistence. This gorgeous Faconnieres is delicious now, as the complex, ripe fruit wraps around the firm acidity, mineral flavors and elegant tannins. Best to wait 5 to 8 years and enjoy until 2035-2040. Highly recommended.  David Lillie

Magnien, Stephane 2017 Chambolle-Musigny Vieilles Vignes

From vines planted by Stéphane's grandfather in the lieu-dits "Athets"on gravelly soils in 1902-1903, the rare and beautiful Magnien Chambolle-Musigny Vieilles Vignes is a lovely combination of delicate fruit and minerals. The 2017 shows vibrant aromas of raspberry, black raspberry and  morello cherry, with hints of violet, rose petal, blood orange and stone, lifted by bright acidity. The palate is light and elegant with tart cherry and raspberry fruit, subtle and sappy, with stone and mineral flavors, finishing with refreshing acidity. This is a delicate and delicious Chambolle that should be decanted if drinking now, or wait 3 to 5 years then enjoy until 2035.  David Lillie

Magnien, Stephane 2017 Chambolle-Musigny 1er Cru Les Sentiers

Les Sentiers is located beneath the Bonnes Mares grand cru, north of the village and shares similar soils.  The wines, while layered and elegant, are more muscular and velvety, rather than silken and high-toned. The  Magnien "Sentiers" is from vines ranging from 45 to 90 years old and ages for 12 months in barrel, 10% new, then 2 to 3 months in cuve inox.  The 2017 vintage is effusively perfumed, with aromas of black cherry, wild raspberry,  violets, forest floor, and iron.  Dark cherry, black tea, and blood orange peel on the sappy, yet chalky, mineral palate. As befits the cru's proximity to Bonnes Mares, this is a more masculine expression of Chambolle-Musiginy. There's good concentration of fruit here, in addition to distinct terroir delineation; with still more to be revealed as the structure resolves itself further.  Decant now or better still, hold for 5 to 15 years. Only 12 btls are available.
