Hiedler 2022 Riesling Steinhaus 1er
"Steinhaus, literally Stonehouse, is the steepest vineyard in Langenlois. It likely takes its name from the ancient stone shelters, whose ruins can be found scattered among the vineyards. The slope is characterized by small terraces, which were partly carved into the crystalline rock centuries ago. The vines have to dig deep to find access to water. They grow on a rocky soil formed of gneiss and amphibolite, traversed by quartz." Practising organic, hand harvested, native yeast. Steinhaus is also planted with an ancient austrian clone and this is a very old school rendition, aged in large foudres of acacia for a longer maturation period undergoing malo. Yet the resulting profile is surprisingly brilliant due to it's high altitude, cool climate and stony terroir. The first thought that popped into my mind upon tasting it was SPICY PALOMA with notes of spice (tajin), smoke (agave), peach and graperuit on a profoundly mineral frame. This is a mindblowing riesling quite unlike any other; Ripe yet linear, juicy yet slinky, it just begs glass after glass accompanied by all manor of spicy asian foods, breathtaking! GH
