Setubal and Friends!
4/11/14 -
Chambers Street Wines had the opportunity to buy some wine from a great cellar that a gentleman had built up over many decades. He stopped adding to this cellar in 1990. The wines we are offering never moved until his heirs decided to sell off what remained. These wines were very well cared for and are impeccable. Every wine we have tried from this cellar was remarkably fresh.
In this cellar there were some rare bottles of traditional Portuguese, sweet, fortified Moscatel de Setubal from J .M. Fonseca. These rare wines are crafted from Muscat de Alexandria grapes, grown on limestone soils in Setubal on the peninsula of the same name. After arresting fermentation to preserve residual sugars Setubal is macerated for 5 months on the fragrant Muscat grape skins; pressed and matured in large oak or mahogany vats for several years. This results in rich, grapey and perfumed wines of increased intensity and concentration as they age. Setubal is a unique wine.
