Oldies but Goodies Jura wines from Michel Gahier, Lulu Vigneron, and our favorite value Poulsard from Overnoy-Crinquand
We'll keep today's email short and sweet. Always allocated, never duplicated, we offer some wines from oldie but goodie producers that we generally receive wines from once a year. Any fan of Jura wines who became a fan in the 2000s will remember when our shelves were stocked with wines from Michel Gahier and Chais de Vieux Bourg, the winery run by Ludwig Bindernagel and Nathalie Eigenschenck that is now knows as Lulu Vigneron. Now we await allocations, and knowing they were both inbounding around the same time, we figured we'd put together a little offering! Included is a fantastic value Ploussard (Poulsard) from Overnoy-Crinquand that delivers all the high-toned charm that we have come to love and expect from this peculiar cépage.
Michel Gahier inherited his family’s vines and has been making his own wine since the 80s; in 1990 he began to bottle under his own name. He farms about six hectares and states that this is as much as he can manage by himself without the assistance of chemicals. In the cellar, the wines undergo classical fermentation and aging: a minimum of ten months in barrel and some time in bottle before release. His sulfur regime is reasonable: 15-30 grams depending on the wine.
Ludwig Bindernagel (pictured above) and his wife Nathalie Eigenschenck were working in Paris before and taking over the estate of Les Chais du Vieux Bourg in 2000. Since purchasing Les Chais du Vieux Bourg, they’ve produced a roster of very Jura-centric styles (along with very Burgundian styles of Pinot Noir and Chardonnay). Even in the early vintages, these wines were recognized as being unique and beautiful. Now starting with the 2019 vintage, they’re known as Lulu Vigneron, and their class is undeniable. No chemical fertilizers, pesticides or machinery touch the vineyards. Native yeasts are used in the cellar, and very low doses of sulfur are used in production. -Eben Lillie
