According to Pepe's website, "the Bastard Negre of the estate, planted in 1974, was thought to be Monastrell until a DNA analysis in 2012 confirmed that there was a confusion of varieties and that it was in fact Morastell, as indicated in the book La Verema by M. Raventós in 1911.
“Bastard Negre” is a synonym of Morastell, Morastel or Graciano, among others. It is a plant resistant to drought, high temperatures and moderately resistant to fungi, with a late budding and long cycle. Low productivity and rustic. A variety that gives us aromas of wild fruits and undergrowth. In the mouth it has a medium structure, very fresh with low ph."

The grapes for this unique red were lightly crushed by foot and put into one Qvevri (amphora), with delicate 'pigeage' to keep the cap wet during fermentation. After fermentation the wine was aged in two used French barrels for 10 months. Only 581 bottles produced.
