Mas d'en Gil 2018 Priorat 'Coma Vella'
'Coma Vella' is majority Grenache (70%) with 20% Carignan and 10% Syrah from vines that are 40 years-old on average, planted between 1965 and 1998. The vineyard here is a mix of red clay and red slate in a warmer part of the valley, giving it roundness, ripeness and soft tannins. Aging is for 12 months in a combination of 1500L foudres and 225L barrels with 15-20% new oak used. Marta highly prefers a very light toast, differing from her father, who's wines carried more influence from new oak. On tasting, we barely got notes of wood, instead the aromatic and rich fruit and earth notes captivated our senses! Typically aged 2 years in bottle, the 2018 was aged for 3 years before release. As Marta explains, this wine says: "Welcome to the Priorat, with fruit and minerality."
From the Mas d'en Gil website: This wine and its name are taken from the Coma Vella vineyard plot, the oldest one in the Vall de la Coma. Planted with Garnatxa Peluda (Downy Grenache) and Garnatxa del País (Grenache) together, this valley faces east and west towards the Mediterranean Sea. The place is blessed by the refreshing sea breeze, known as the Garbinada.
