Introducing Varnelli
3/13/12 -
Although the Varnelli distillery is famous throughout Italy, the spirits have only recently become readily available in the United States. Varnelli is located in the inland Muccia commune of the Marche, bordered by Umbria to the West and the Sibillini mountains to the Southeast. It was in these rugged mountains that, in 1868, Girolamo Varnelli began tasting and distilling the herbal concoction that would become the outline for the present Amaro Sibillia flavored with Gentian and China Root. Girolamo’s son Antonio developed the “L'Anice Secco Speciale” liquor which has become Varnelli’s most known product. In Italy if one asks for a “Varnelli” one receives a dry-ish Sambucca-like beverage that packs an intense anise kick. Today the distillery is run by four ladies, who represent the fourth generation of Varnellis, and although distribution has increased, the quality of the botanicals and spirits are still superb. I love these spirits because they make great aperitifs or digestives. Add tonic and orange slice for a refreshing long drink, or serve neat as a stomach-soothing and relaxing after dinner sipper. It should also be mentioned that the bottles have beautiful Fin de Siecle/Art Nouveau labels that look outstanding and would class up any liquor shelf. JR
