It's a steep slope of granite terraces, isolated in an oak forest facing due south and protected from the wind. (In the opinion of Livingston-Learmonth in "Wines of the Northern Rhône" wine from Les Picaudières is "certainly better" than many Hermitage from the eastern part of the hill.) The vines range from 30 to 80 years-old. The grapes are hand-harvested and mostly de-stemmed. The wine ages 16 months, 40% in foudre, 60% in burgundy barrels, new to 5 year-old. The wine shows a deep red/black color with an elegant melange of ripe blackberry, black cherry and blueberry with bitter chocolate, black olive, earth and menthol. The palate shows bright berry liqueurs with deeper earthy black fruits , black pepper, cocoa and mineral flavors with ample tannins and a long saline finish of black fruits and firm acidity. It's quite well-structured and long even in this rather hot, dry vintage, with great freshness and moderate alcohol. This is a superb northern Rhône Syrah that can be enjoyed young, especially with grilled foods, but best to wait five to ten years and drink until 2044. Highly recommended. - David Lillie

//cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/0602/3790/6145/files/Rousset_Stephane2022Crozes-HermitageLesPicaudieres-FB.jpg?v=1718810578
dumien-serrette-2022-cornas-henri
Dumien Serrette 2022 Cornas "Henri"

The Dumien-Serrette 2022 "Henri" is from vines planted in 1913 on Patou, a steep hillside of granite soils. 100% whole-cluster fermentation, aging in one-year old barrels, then 3 - 6 year-old barrels. 900 bottles were made in 2022. Their 2024 Vin de Pays Marsanne "Rendez-Vous" is a simply superb everyday wine! Light bronze/gold color. Aromas of almond, lime-flower, honeysuckle, lemon peel and hay, really quite pretty. Ripe stone fruits on the palate, primarily peach and dried pear with lemon, spice and saline mineral flavors with good balancing acidity in the long finish. Serve this lovely wine with chicken, full-flavored fish, mild cheeses and Asian foods. The Saint-Joseph vines (all Syrah of course) are in Limony, on thin granite soils, and are 25 to 50 years old. Shallow plowing ("griffage") is done in the summer, with rye and clover growing between the rows in winter. The grapes are 80% de-stemmed, fermentations are with wild yeasts, aging is in old barrels. The 2024 Saint-Joseph shows elegant aromas of blackberry and blueberry, quite floral, with hints of citrus, herbs and spice, a bit brighter than the 2022 and 2023. The palate shows earthy black fruits with the true northern Rhone Syrah flavors that we love, with citrus and mineral notes, nicely balanced and finishing with terrific length and firm acidity. This will pair well with roast chicken, lamb and pork dishes and will improve for three to five years in the bottle.
