Carbonic maceration with whole clusters then a slow vertical press to finish the fermentation. No additives, a small addition of SO2 before bottling. Based on last winter's tasting, the 2022 shows beautifully ripe but high-toned red fruits, with lovely aromas of cherry, strawberry, blackberry and violet with herbal and citrus notes. The palate is fresh and mineral, a bit lighter and brighter than the Morgon, very sapid and velvety, infused with berry fruits and citrusy acids, and the finish is long and elegant. Georges Descombes is one of the finest producers in the region over the last ten years, making consistently great wines that are completely affordable. This is a lovely food-friendly Brouilly to serve, quite cool, with chicken, pork, charcuterie and mild cheeses.

Georges Descombes is one of the premiere vignerons in Beaujolais. His winemaking is very traditional; using native yeasts, semi-carbonic maceration, and very little sulfur added at bottling. The 2023 Morgon shows a bright, vivid red/black color with earth, violet and citrus notes mingling with lovely raspberry and blackberry aromas. The palate is ripe, silky and well-structured with fresh, velvety raspberry, cherry and blackberry fruit, with earth and mineral notes bringing texture and length to the sappy, lingering finish. This is a beautiful Morgon to serve cool with farm chicken, grilled pork and lamb, cow cheeses and charcuterie over the next 4 - 5 years.

This is a classic version of the Descombes Morgon VV, showing ripe high-toned black raspberry and tart cherry aromas with plum, violet, citrus, earth and brown spice, really lovely. The elegant black and red fruits continue on the palate, which is quite saline and earthy as well, really showing the terroir. The wine is dense and structured but bright and balanced, finishing with refreshing acidity, citrus, cherry fruit, anise and mineral flavors. A recent bottle reminded us of why we consider the Descombes wines to be some of the best of the region. The fruit profile was beautifully developed and mature, the earthy flavors were well integrated on the mid-palate and in the long, mineral finish. Delicious now, this should be superb in three to five years, and should drink well till 2035 and beyond.

From four hectares of massale-selection, high density plantings ranging from 50 to 100 years of age in the lieu-dits of Chenes, Corcelette, and les Martillets. Jean-Claude Chanudet and his wife Geneviève (Chamonard) at Domaine Chamonard are making some of the finest wines in the Beaujolais. His father-in-law, Joseph Chamonard, was farming with organic methods and making wine in the Chauvet style along with his friends in Morgon, Guy Breton, Jean Thevenet, Marcel Lapierre and Jean Foillard. The 4 hectare estate is farmed with great care, although not certified organic, fermentations are with wild yeasts and aging is in large old casks and foudres. The wines are enjoyable young but have a great ability to age. The 2020 shows a medium red/purple color with very pretty aromas of raspberry, tart cherry, and violet with citrus peel and wet earth. The palate shows sappy raspberry and cherry fruit with earth and mineral flavors, really showing the terroir. Yet there is no lack of excitement in the vielles vignes (old vines) offerings from Georges Descombes, and the 2022 Chiroubles is no exception, and showing quite beautifully right now, though a decant definitely helps. The nose shows wonderful deep fruit notes of dark cherry, cherry liqueur, blackberry, dark forest fruit, raspberry, raspberry leaves, blackcurrant tea, and a hint of baking spice and nutmeg. The palate is fresh and energetic, with vibrant acidity and is both expressive and showing great intensity of flavor. There is also a bit of earthiness and minerality, which balances well with the fruit and spice notes.
