The Sarbèche 2016 Saint-Joseph is from 30 year-old Syrah vines grown in a steep section of the excellent lieu-dit "les Rivoires" in Tournon. Whole cluster fermentation followed by 2 years in 10 year-old Burgundy barrels, 10 mg/L SO2 added before bottling. The wine shows a deep opaque black/red color with elegant aromas of blackberry, cassis and blueberry, quite deep and meaty with hints of violet and mint. The palate is supple and richly textured with deep blackberry, black raspberry, earth, licorice and spice, with bitter chocolate, sappy black fruits, minerals and firm acidity in the finish. This quite serious Saint-Joseph should be decanted if drinking now and should show beautifully with five to fifteen years of cellaring. David Lillie
