Principiano, Ferdinando 2013 Barolo Serralunga

Ferdinando Principiano is part of the next generation in Barolo who are guaranteeing that our kids and grandkids are ensured a supply of brilliant wines (some of the others on my short list are the Brovia family, Mario Fontana, Giacomo Fenocchio, Elio Sandri, Fabio Alessandria at Burlotto, Gianni Canonica – not kids, but experienced wine makers in their prime). I’ve told the story before about how around 2008 Ferdinando completely changed course from making full-on modern style wine to full-on traditional wines, which is a courageous move under any circumstance, and one which is yielding beautiful wines. And beautiful vines: his vineyards are also gorgeous.
The Barolo is a blend of fruit from Boscaretto, Baudana, and Leirano – all Serralunga vineyards. It’s very good indeed, harmonious and balanced, with lovely fruit, fine tannin, and surprisingly accessible (when tasted in May 2017). Jamie Wolff

Cordero di Montezemolo 1971 Barolo Monfalletto

A consistently excellent wine — we've been lucky to get to taste this several times in the last few years. It needs a lot of time to breathe, and then it provides a classic example of fully mature Nebbiolo. Jamie Wolff

Bellegrave 2010 Pomerol

This is an oustanding Pomerol from Chateau Bellegrave, which was in conversion to organic certification in 2010. While it shows the depth and structure of this excellent vintage in Bordeaux, the wine is surprisingly supple and forward making it a delicious wine for current drinking. The aromas are ripe and rich with black fruits, cassis and blackberry with sous-bois, cocoa, spice and floral notes. The palate is firm but round, deep and elegant with complex fruit flavors backed by earth and mineral notes with good freshness and silky tannins. Decant this lovely wine  a few hours in advance if possible or cellar for five to fifteen years

Clos du Jaugueyron (Théron) 2007 Margaux

Just entering maturity, the 2007 Clos du Jaugueyron Margaux has a perfumed nose with aromas of violets, cassis, wild blackberry, and cedar. The mid-weight  palate offers good freshness, fine-grained tannins, and flavors of ripe black currants, hedge fruits, and graphite, with notes of cocoa on a velvety, lingering finish. There is beautiful interplay between the sweet, savory, and structural elements. Lovely now with a bright upside over the next 10-15 years. John McIlwain

Brochet, Emmanuel NV (2013 base) Champagne Extra Brut 1er Cru Le Mont Benoit

Emmanuel Brochet, produces Champagnes of particularly mineral character from the clay and limestone soils of a single lieu-dit called Le Mont Benoit located in the northern part of the Montagne de Reims. The vines are date from 1962 and 1984 and have been farmed organically since 2005 and certified since 2008. The current disgorgement of Le Mont Benoit Extra Brut is based on the the 2013 vintage with reserve wine from the 2012 vintage. The cepage is 39% Pinot Noir 37% Pinot Meunier, and 24% Chardonnay fermented in barrel with native yeasts and bottled with a dosage of  4 grams/L. Newly arrived, the wine is a bit aromatically reticent, though with air reveals pear skin and stony notes.  The palate is quite chiseled and vinous, high-lighting a denser rather than chalky minerality or overt fruit.  And while powerful, this is quite elegant, if coiled and shows quite long and dry, though not quite austere. Within this structure are lovely notes of blood orange peel, salt, and apricot with hints of autolyse. This is  quite young, but has great energy within and will reward mid to longer term aging. Beaufort, André 2002 Champagne Polisy Brut Nature

A sensational mature Champagne from André Beaufort - the estate converted to organic agriculture in the early 70's and makes brilliant, full-bodied Champagnes that are among the most "vinous" being made today. Medium golden yellow in color and sporting a discrete mousse. The nose is quite floral with tones of cherry blossoms, apple blossoms, and irises before touches of quince and fresh baguette. The palate is concentrated with a spherical and laser-like focus that offers notes of lemon sorbet, tart lemon custard, and apple pie, underlined by a fine minerality that persists through to a rounded, savory finish. Really a very pretty and lovely wine. This medium bodied Champagne is made of approximately 80% Pinot Noir and 20% Chardonnay and was disgorged in March 2017 after 14 years of sur-lie aging, illustrating the Beauforts' commitment to releasing mature wines.

Hirsch 2015 Kamptal Riesling Heiligenstein

Heiligenstein is legendary: born of the Bohemian Massif it is home to a myriad of soil types, and Johannes Hirsch is a venerable scholar of Kamptal terroir. His dedication and love for the region is felt in his commitment to uncompromisingly farming biodynamically, utilizing soft-pruning techniques in the vineyards, and the care taken in the cellar to let the wines ferment spontaneously and at their own speed in a mix of stainless steel, acacia, and oak barrels (all used). The Hirsch Heiligenstein vineyard is on the Zöbing side, curving from south- to southwest-facing in aspect, with a mix of silt, conglomerate, and colored sandstone along with gravel, volcanic soils, and in some portions, loess. Aromas of fresh wildflower stems, clover, and white pepper on the nose, the palate has fantastic cut, with fruity yet tart tangerine, salty mineral structure with green apple and underripe apricot. Busch, Clemens 2015 Mosel Pündericher Marienburg Riesling Fahrlay GG

Fahrlay is a south-facing, terraced parcel located between two rock outcroppings on the Marienburg, with predominately blue slate. Vines here are ungrafted and single-post trained: a time-consuming method preferred by Clemens and Rita Busch for their older vines. Clover, rose, and orange oil on the nose, the palate is both weighty and stony, with notes of greengage plum, nectarine pit, and a salty minerality. Cari Bernard

Huet 1996 Vouvray Le Mont Moelleux 1er Trie

A great vintage for Huet's sweet wines — lacking the high sugars of 1997 but ripe enough and with perfect acidity which will carry them a long way. The Le Mont 1er Trie is just beginning to open up and would be great fun to drink now, but better yet, put it away for another 20 years and find a reason for living! 67 gr/l RS, 5.9 gr/l acid, 12.5 % alc. Vacheron 2016 Sancerre

Domaine Vacheron is one of the few organic and Biodynamic estates in Sancerre. The lovely 2016 is from 30 to 50 year-old vines on both chalk and silex hillside parcels. The grapes are hand-harvested, the fermentation is wth wild yeasts and the wine is aged in tank. The wine shows a pale bronze color and subtle armoas of pear, quince, lime-flower  and stone with a bit of honeysuckle. The palate is light and crisp, showing stone and mineral flavors that underly white fruits, citrus peel, almond and mineral flavors, leading to a very clean and refreshing finish. Light enough to pair well with oysters, this will accompany any mild flavored fish or chicken dish and goat cheeses.

Marcoux 2015 Chateauneuf du Pape Rouge

Domaine de Marcoux farms about 18 ha in Châteauneuf-du-Pape. There is a wide range of soil types from sandy soils in Charbonnières, to red clay and galets in L’Arnesque and Les Bouquets, to limestone and marl in Les Esquirons and Beaurenard, to red clay and gravel in Gallimardes, Les Serres and Les Plagnes. They grow mainly Grenache, with an average vine age of 50 years old, with smaller amounts of Mourvedre, Syrah, and Cinsault. There is a four week wild-yeast vinification with minimal extraction followed by aging in cement vats and large barrels. The 2015 Marcoux shows a dense garnet/black color with meaty blackberry and black cherry liqueur with floral, spice and pepper. The palate is dense and sappy, quite supple and ripe with bright red currant and berry fruit that is lifted by firm acidity and that continues in the long well structured finish. As with all the 2015 Châteauneufs, the lovely fruit makes this delicious now, but three to five years of aging will really open the wine which should drink well for 15 to 20 years. This is a wine with great character and authenticity, well done Domaine de Marcoux!  David Lillie

Rateau 2015 Beaune 1er Cru Les Reversées

Generous black cherry, boysenberry, notes of cherry pit and anise on nose. Ripe mid-weight palate, ripe black fruits, hints of iodine and iron and other soil beneath supple structure. Succulent acidity and savory mineral notes offset the ripeness and lend energy and drive on a rich, palate-coating finish. This has good punch, even if it's more generous than I associate with very young Rateau. The purity of fruit and earth notes are finely balanced and this is an excellent Burgundy for the mid-term. A fine pairing with braised chicken thighs with mustard, tarragon, and shallots. A great value from the pioneer of biodynamic Burgundy! John McIlwain

Lienhardt, Antoine 2014 Côte de Nuits Villages Les Essards

From low-yielding vines located in Comblanchien (probably more famous for its quarries and eponymous limestone than viticulture), planted in the 1960s by Antoine Lienhardt's grandfather. Les Essards is a short distance from another of Antoine's lieux dits, Les Plantes Aux Bois. There is a thin layer of rocky clay topsoil over Comblanchien limestone and the vine rows run from east to west. A bit circumspect upon opening, decanting reveals red plum and ripe cherry aromas with hints of mustard seed and black tea on the nose. The palate is nervy with bright flavors of brambly red fruit, vibrant acidity, and a pungent, verging on saline minerality on a persistent, and detailed finish. Great lift and purity with wonderful interplay between the pure red fruit and distinctly stony elements. Decant if planning to drink now or cellar for 3-7 years to allow the elements to integrate. Magnien, Stephane 2014 Morey-Saint-Denis 1er Cru Les Monts Luisants

Situated just above Clos de la Roche, the Magnien's 2014 1er Cru Mont-Luisants shares the grand cru's "inherent lushness" (Clive Coates) in this lovely vintage for Burgundy. The wine shows a deep red-black color with lush aromas of blackberry, plum and ripe strawberry with earth, graphite and citrus. Dense ripe blackberry and black cherry fruit coats the palate with hints of bitter chocolate and soil. Surprisingly round but with nice chalky acidity and a long finish of citrus and pretty berry fruits. Quite delicious now, this lovely wine will offer superb drinking with a little time in the cellar, perhaps best 2020 - 2035. David Lillie

Lafouge 2015 Auxey-Duresses Les Hautés Blanc

From a north-facing parcel fairly high on the slope next to Meursault Les Vireuils. Subtle, rather delicate aromas of lime-flower and citrus, with white fruits, stone and honeysuckle. The palate is fresh and bright with mineral flavors predominating, with pear, lemon peel and herbal notes, quite pure and refreshing. The opposite of an oaky fruit-bomb, this is a light and lovely Chardonnay of terroir that will accompany shellfish, sole, flounder, cod and young goat cheeses.

Monte Bernardi 2013 Sa'etta

Sa’etta is a cuvee dedicated to the best terroir of the Monte Bernardi estate: the oldest vines planted 45 years ago in the distinct compact sandstone of the area known as Pietraforte.  The wine made from the best bunches of Sangiovese which are fermented on skins for 4 weeks and aged in used Slavonian and Austrian Botti for at least 2 years.  The nose is intense and forward with a deep earthy tone layered with notes of tobacco, thyme, and rosemary followed by black cherry fruit.  Full with grippy tannins and plenty of acidity, the palate is quite structured without being heavy or over-extracted leading into a intensely mineral finish. An assertive wine that is all the better without the presence of new oak or other “prestigious” flourishes.  Perfect for the cellar, I would recommend decanting if drinking now and pairing with any full-flavored foods. For me it will always be the perfect match for a roasted leg of lamb. Andy Paynter

Fornacina 2012 Brunello di Montalcino

The 2012 Brunello from Fornacina is another exciting vintage of one of my favorite producers in the region.  The estate was certified organic in 2004 and only produces the Brunello from their own grapes in a traditional style: native yeast fermentation, raised in Slavonian botti for 3 years, and rested in bottle for 1 year.  The wine shows deep, ripe cherry fruit on the nose with notes of tobacco and rosemary. It shows  interesting contrast on the palate with chewy tannins and rich flavors of tar and moist earth lifted by bright acidity and a distinct mineral tone on the finish.  A lovely wine now with a short decant, this will continue to age for many years to come. Try it with leg of lamb, grilled steak, or especially rich pasta dishes. Andy Paynter

Scala Dei 2013 Priorat Garnacha Cartoixa

The founding of Scala Dei monastery by the Carthusian monks in 1194 gave rise to the constellation of postcard-perfect, rustic mountain villages that compose the Priorat region today. The founding of Scala Dei winery in 1973 was similarly influential in the history of Priorat wines, producing the region's first bottled vintage in 1974. Winemaker Ricard Rofes is taking Scala Dei back to its roots, returning to the era before new oak and destemmers reigned, allowing the natural power and depth of Priorat to shine through the wines. According to Rofes, 2013 was a perfect year for Scala Dei. Consisting of 75% Grenache and 25% Carignan, raised in a mix of 500L and 600L foudres and concrete tank for 18-22 months, Cartoixa expresses the balance of this vintage. Rich, warm aromas of licorella slate,  flowering Mediterranean plants and herbs, are met by the flavors of red plum and black currant on the mineral-driven palate, with supple tannins, and terrific freshness. Ghostwriter 2013 Santa Cruz Mountains Bates Ranch Cabernet

Reminiscent of old-school Cabernet from the 60’s and 70’s, the wine’s supple tannins and lustrous acidity frame sleek black cherry, plum, cassis, menthol, graphite, and licorice flavors. winemaker Kenny Likitprakong simply killed it with this inaugural vintage from Bates Ranch, which was planted in the 1970s at 2400 feet elevation in the Santa Cruz Mountains. Electric and bold, with 15% stem inclusion and 25% new oak (and many years ahead), this is a classic Cabernet to pair with grilled short ribs or a juicy steak for your 4th of July BBQ.  Jonas Mendoza

Ridge 2011 Santa Cruz Mountains Monte Bello Merlot Estate

Ridge Vineyards first made Merlot in 1974 on Monte Bello; after being initially blended into their famed Cabernet, the Merlot eventually showed enough structure and complexity to merit a separate bottling. Aged nearly 20 months in a combination of 40% new and 60% 4-5 year old American oak barrels, this Merlot displays clove, anise, and allspice aromatics. The high elevation of the Monte Bello vineyard (nearly 2600 feet!) shines through with red plum skin, tart red cherry, and fennel flavors, followed by a sinewy black olive finish. Portola Springs Vineyard is a consistent standout in the excellent range of Thomas Fogarty Chardonnays. 2012 has riper, sunnier fruit tone than the austere 2011, without sacrificing any of Portola Springs' cool mineral core and impressive, driving acidity, owing to the low-yielding, late-ripening, nearly 40-year-old vines planted on basalt and shale. Complex and rich enough to handle poultry and pork dishes, with refreshing energy to compliment seafood and veggies. Ariana Rolich

Chateau de Briat 2000 Bas Armagnac Bacco

The 2000 Bacco fully exudes the traditional Château de Briat house style: decadent, yet complex and structured, with a focus on new oak. Again, from the diary of John Rankin: On the nose it is luscious with sweet caramel, the chewy soft kind, and orange zest rising from the glass. On the palate it is rich and silky – very drinkable – with a touch of spice and a sugary milk chocolate finish. With this flavor profile and the château’s affinity for new oak, this would be a fantastic crossover spirit for Bourbon lovers! Tim Gagnon

Jean Grosperrin 1989 Cognac de Collection L'Isle d'Oleron

This beautiful single cask of congac comes from the collection of Jean grosperrin, negociant extraordinaire and champion of pure spirits; no added sugar, boise (essentially liquid tannin, made by reducing oak chips in boiling water) or other additives. This is a 25 year old cognac with grapes coming from the sandy soils of the island of Oleron, off the west coast of France. The island was once renowned for its production, but years of increased tourism have resulted in only a handful of growers remaining. Rich but elegant, this cask balances still fresh flavors of fruit (apple, pear, pear skin) with baking spice, sultana, almonds, marzipan, and a slight salted caramel quility. This cognac is fully evolved, with unmistakable savory, umami notes of rancio  on the long and complex finish, but without sacrificing any of the lift and freshness. This is an utterly charming single cask of pure and authentic spirit with lots of soul. Perfect as an after dinner drink, or a gift for the brandy lover in your life. Oskar Kostecki

The words of Mark Twain still ring true in 2017: "Too much of anything is bad, but too much good whiskey is barely enough." Our seasonal single cask collaboration with Wigle from Pittsburgh is finally here! Wigle makes a wonderfully spicy and earthy rye whiskey, and this year's expression is no different. Gingerbread and candied orange dominate the nose, while the warming palate of this nearly cask-strength whiskey leads to more savory notes of nutmeg, clove, cedar and white pepper. Chapelle St. Theodoric 2014 Chateauneuf du Pape Les Sablons

I don't normally think of Chateauneuf-du-Pape on Thanksgiving, but this elegant, relatively light-bodied version would be a brilliant choice for your hoilday meal.   "Chapelle St. Theodoric is a project between winemaker Baptiste Grangeon and importer Peter Weygandt.  There are two parcels; one in the lieu-dit La Guigasse, which is a pure sand soil and where the vines (all Grenache) range in age of from 50 to 100 year; and the other parcel at the top of Pignan, literally adjoining the vines of Chateau Rayas, also in pure sand and also pure, old vines Grenache. The vinification is traditional, that is to say, whole-cluster, such as employed  by Jacques Reynaud at Chateau Rayas, Laurent Charvin, Henri Bonneau. In the 2014 vintage, it was decided to put all of the La Guigasse and some of the Grand Pin into  Les Sablons, because of the more forward style of 2014." - Weygandt-Metzler.  The 2014 "Les Sablons" is indeed a very lovely Châteauneuf, showing beautiful ripe red currant and black cherry aromas with hints of brown spice, rose, earth and musk. The palate is light and fine but very dense with sappy red fruits, citrus, earth and mineral flavors with hints of licorice and prune. The finish is long and lingering, with firm acidity showing good aging potential. Elegant and delicious now - serve slightly cool - perhaps best 2020 to 2030. Three cheers to Peter Weygandt and Baptiste Grangeon for producing this lovely old-school Châteaneuf-du-Pape!

Billaud-Simon 2014 Chablis 1er Cru Vaillons

Billaud-Simon has always seemed to have a super-charged quality, relative to most other growers: more minerals, more cut, more floral aromas, an extra-layer of concentration, yet somehow remaining agile. The 2014 has aromas of lemon blossom, ripe tangerine peel, sea breeze, and iodine. The palate is electric with pungent, driving minerality, broad citrus and stone fruit flavors, and a lip-smacking, brightly acidic character. Long vibrant finish with plenty of tension between the pure ripe fruit and punchy stony elements. Lots of upside for cellaring and highly recommended. I'd love to drink this with rare tuna, swordfish, or even roasted chicken with a zippy salsa verde with plenty of capers. John McIlwain
