We’ve received about 50 cases of additional wine from the Connoisseur’s Cellar; this week’s round of offers also includes some more-than-worthy bottles that perhaps got lost in the sheer volume of our earlier emails. By now it’s likely that you share our impression that years of acquaintance and friendship has proved: this is one smart wine person, uncompromising and focused on the best, if not always the obvious or well-known. In short, a true connoisseur.
Wines will be available starting Wednesday, 8/16.
Alzinger 2012 Wachau Mühlpoint Grüner Veltliner Federspiel
The Alzinger Federspiels are lighter, brighter and fresher than the Smaragds, as one would expect. They're top examples of fresh-tasting Austrian wines to drink now rather than to age. This is our go-to when finding something to drink with difficult-to-pair-with vegetable dishes. The vines are planted closer to the river where the soil is less stony and more alluvial. -jfr
Hirtzberger 2011 Wachau Riesling Smaragd Singerriedl
Singerriedl is Hirtzberger's signature vineyard; furthest east in Spitz, and planted to Riesling, it creates the most stunning examples of deep, complex, lush Austrian wines. The wines show their best with age and are becoming increasingly difficult to find on the secondary market, so bury some of these in your cellar for 10 years then revisit them. It will be worth it... -jfr
Dönnhoff 2012 Nahe Riesling Niederhäuser Hermannshöhle Spätlese
Give the Hermannshöhle some air this vintage. It's as great as always but in just the 5 minutes it was in my glass at the tasting it really blossomed. The density, focus and length are all there from the get-go, but the aromatic detail and complexity really explode with just slight aeration. This is classic HH, with more definition than 2011. -jfr
