“In terms of the grandeur of its bold, dominant, powerful red wines (often the equals of some of the most famous grands crus of Europe)—also in terms of the pioneering experimentation by its prestigious winemaker-partner, Paul Draper—this is one of the most important vineyards in the United States.” –Roy Andries de Groot. The Wines of California (1982).
That Ridge Vineyards is considered one of the benchmarks in American viticulture isn’t exactly news. Since 1962, they have produced some of California’s most distinctive single vineyard wines: Monte Bello in the Santa Cruz Mountains and an assortment of Zinfandel and Rhône variety blends from across the state. For lovers of Zinfandel, the names Geyserville, Lytton Springs, and York Creek are of historical importance thanks to Paul Draper and the winery’s insistence of not only labeling each wine’s origin, but also the exact blend of grapes and information about the vintage conditions, (not to mention some of the best typography in the business).
Another innovation at Ridge was the creation of the first direct-sale wine club in 1977, to reward long-time regular customers with access to small production releases. This was named the Alternative Tasting Program, or ATP. As these were limited runs, one seldom encounters the wines unless they are a member of the program.
Recently, one of our valued customers doing a bit of cellar thinning was kind enough to part with a number of bottles from the Ridge ATP. The bottles were stored in a cool home cellar and look beautiful. We hope you’ll enjoy this offer of true California classics. Happy hunting! -John McIlwain
