Please Welcome Wink Lorch! Book Signing, Jura Tasting, and Savoie Dinner

Wink Lorch’s wine writing career spans 25 years, with half of them exclusively covering the Jura. Her self-published Jura Wine: The Book is hands-down the most complete guide in English to the wines of the region. She does not come to New York City often, so we are very excited to be hosting her here at Chambers Street Wines and for dinner at Racines NY!

David Lillie writes: CSW and Racines NY present another intimate Irregular Dinner at Racines NY on Tuesday, April 28th at 7:00, moving south/south-east from the Jura to Savoie, accompanied by Wine Writer extraordinaire Wink Lorch, Sophie Barrett of Selection Massale and Chambers Street's Tim Gagnon. We'll taste superb wines from Domaine Dupasquier in Jongieux, including the lovely 2010 Marestal, and the wonderful wines of Dominique Belluard in Ayse. We'll enjoy a four-course dinner by Frédéric Duca, whose kitchen is creating some of the best French cuisine in America. Racines NY, 94 Chambers St, Tuesday April 28th 7:00pm $140 all inclusive.

The following evening, Wednesday April 29th, Wink will be at CSW from 5-7pm signing her book, Jura Wine: The Book, and we will be pouring a selection of wines from the Jura. It will definitely be a fun, delicious, and informative event not to be missed!

Below you will find fantastic wines available at CSW that highlight these exciting regions, along with copies of Wink’s book. As Eric Asimov writes in the NY Times - “It’s a complete yet concise, politely opinionated guide to this region and its captivating wines and food.” Tim Gagnon

Dupasquier 2011 Savoie Pinot Noir

I am always thrilled to have the wines of David Dupasquier in the shop.  He consistently crafts fantastic, terroir-driven wines from his 15 hectare estate in Aimavigne. Here the climate seems more northern Rhone than Savoie with warm, sunny days and cool nights that ultimately benefit the vines. The Dupasquier’s vines are all planted in clay and limestone soils on southern facing slopes which lead to optimal ripening conditions in a region known for lean and mineral-driven wines. This Pinot Noir is fermented with native yeasts and is aged in huge old barrels for one year before being bottled and aged another year in their cellar before release. It shows bright, brambly red berry fruits with an irony edge on the nose and has a juicy acidity along with redder berry fruits on the palate. This is a fantastic, traditional wine! Tim Gagnon

Dupasquier 2011 Savoie Mondeuse

In my opinion, David Dupasquier’s Mondeuse is his piece de resistance. The sunny clime and wide diurnal range naturally results in healthy vines and perfectly ripe grapes which the Dupasquier family masterfully makes into seriously delicious wines. This wine is deep with a dark purple robe and exhibits spicy blackberry fruit, black peppercorn, dried violet petals, and a touch of meaty funk reminiscent of northern Rhône Valley Syrah. The year spent in large neutral oak helps to soften the tannins and the year spent in bottle before release allows the fruit to integrate well with the spicy and savory flavors present on the palate. Pair this with grilled lamb or cheeseburgers! Tim Gagnon

Dupasquier 2012 Savoie Jacquère

David Dupasquier’s Jacquère is a perennial favorite of mine. Not only does this have the classic crisp and briny flavors that I love about the grape, it is an incredible value. The Dupasquier family holds back their wines an extra year after bottling (a rare practice in the Savoie) which helps to mellow out the acidity and balance the wine. It opens with fresh apricot and tart green apple aromas that allude to the fruit found on the palate along with petrol and smoke. Apricot and lemon abound on the finish with an invigorating acidity. Try this with Thai food! Tim Gagnon

Dupasquier 2011 Roussette de Savoie Altesse

Made from Roussette (or Altesse as it’s called elsewhere in France), this wine is exotic and rich. On the nose it shows baked apricot, fresh cream, mango flesh, orange marmalade, and jasmine. The vines are all planted in limestone soils, as is evident on the palate: it is much more reserved and focused with delicate toasted wheat and mineral-laden cantaloupe notes. Truly a well-made wine! Ardoisieres 2013 IGP St Pierre de Soucy Argile Blanc

Located on the steep, rocky slopes in the shadow of Mont Blanc, high above the village of Freterive, lies Domaine des Ardoisières 17-hectare estate. With a winemaking history dating back to the Romans, the estate had fallen into disrepair becoming overgrown with forests and remained that way until the late-1990s when the vineyard sites were cleared and ancient terraces rebuilt. The estate is now being overseen by Brice Omont - a Champagne native who took over the estate in 2005 - with biodynamic principles having been employed from the start and native yeasts carrying out all fermentations resulting in truly stunning wines. This cuvee is a blend of Chardonnay, Jacquère, and Mondeuse Blanche which sees elévage in 2/3 stainless steel tank and 1/3 neutral barrique which gives it nuance and balance while maintaining a lifted freshness. Tropical and salty with pear skin and almond notes and giving way to stern minerals and more orchard fruit on the palate, it is an exciting wine for lovers of Savoie whites. Tim Gagnon

Ardoisieres 2013 IGP St Pierre de Soucy Argile Rouge

Every year I taste Brice Omont’s wines I find that I like them even more than the last. This year is no exception! His 2013 Argile Rouge is made of 80% Gamay and 20% Persan (grown biodynamically) and is fermented with native yeasts. The wine then spends nine months in three- to five-year-old barrels before bottling. It is a touch smoky on the nose with red raspberry compote, pomegranate seeds, and a hint of rhubarb. On the palate it is lean and mineral driven with a lip-smacking acidity. This wine is incredibly pure and would pair well with all kinds of fatty foods. I’m thinking grilled pork belly at a barbecue! Belluard 2013 Vin de Savoie Le Feu "Cepage Gringet"

Le Feu is Dominique’s top wine. The Gringet grapes are sourced from his oldest vines planted in red, iron-rich soils located on steep south-facing slopes. This definitely lends a hand to this wine being more rich and deep than Les Alpes. Layers of red fruit and exotic spice play off of savory tamarind notes and a crunchy minerality. This is among one of his most age-worthy wines. Tim Gagnon

Belluard 2013 Vin de Savoie Cepage Gringet "Les Alpes"

This is a blend of different parcels of Gringet vines around Ayze planted in limestone soils making it much more crisp and mineral-driven than its big brother, Le Feu. Honey-tinged with purple wildflowers, and orange blossom on the nose which alludes to the tangy pineapple, orange flesh, and apricot found on the palate.  Mouth-coating and waxy with a sea-salty acidity. Belluard 2013 Vin de Savoie Cepage Altesse "Grandes Jorass

100% Altesse from vines planted in yellow marl soils. These vines were acquired from the Dupasquier family who live close to Dominique. Altesse can yield rich, honeyed wines, but the 2013 is much more lean, layered, and delicate. A fantastic example of this grape. Tim Gagnon

Belluard NV Ayse Vin de Savoie Les Perles du Mont Blanc

Les Perles du Mont Blanc is an exciting and esoteric bottle of wine that shows the capabilities of Gringet. Fermentation for the base wine is done with indigenous yeast; the second with Champagne yeast. There is no dosage added, making for an exquisitely dry and very complex wine that is sometimes reminiscent of Christmas spice and nuts, sometimes of apples and honey. On the palate it is rich, honey-tinged with dried white flowers, golden plums, and green apple matched with a bracing acidity. Serious enough for the geeks, but perfect for everyone. Tim Gagnon

Péron, Jean-Yves 2012 Vin de France Les Oeillets Blanc

Jean-Yves Péron is a maverick of natural wine, crafting serious (and seriously amazing) wines in the under-appreciated Savoie region of eastern France. His vineyards lie in the village of Chevaline on schist-covered, sloping vineyards that are between 350 and 550 meters in altitude. Jean-Yves is lucky enough to call this area home and even luckier still to have to have the opportunity to farm 100+ year old vines that haven’t seen phylloxera! The Les Oeillets is a new cuvée from Péron, and we are thrilled to have it in the shop. Comprised of 100% Jacquère from his lower-altitude, younger vines, it exhibits exotic candied melon notes and an electric acidity reminiscent of fresh-squeezed lemon juice over pine needles. The grapes spend one week on the skins before pressing giving the wine a nice tannic grip while maintaining exuberant brightness, and vibrant fruit and minerals. Un-fined, unfiltered and, like all of his cuvées, with no sulphur added, this is a must-try for lovers of Savoie! Tim Gagnon

Saint Pierre 2013 Arbois Pinot Noir Cuvée Saint Pierre

A new vintage from Fabrice Dodane! This 100% Pinot Noir from Arbois is traditionally vinified, aged in neutral oak and bottled without any added sulphur. It is incredibly fresh with deep cherry, orange blossom and a delicate smokiness on the nose. Lots of minerals and refreshing red berry fruits on the palate make this wine a perfect example of what we love about Jurassian Pinot Noir. Tim Gagnon

Saint Pierre 2013 Arbois Pinot Noir Les Gaudrettes

Fabrice Dodane never seems to disappoint. His Les Gaudrettes cuvée is vinified using carbonic maceration and has no sulfur added at any time which gives it incredible lift. This wine shows bright red cherry and strawberry fruit with a delicate hint of rose petal on the nose and high-toned fruit paired with a juicy acidity on the palate. I know I will be serving this slightly chilled this summer! Tim Gagnon

Overnoy-Crinquand 2011 Arbois-Pupillin Ploussard

Domaine Overnoy-Crinquand lies in the center of the village of Pupillin, producing beautiful wines from their 5.5 hectares of organically tended vines planted in limestone and clay soils. Pupillin is recognized as the home of the Ploussard grape, and given the results that Mikael Crinquand is consistently able to obtain, we have to agree. A touch of reduction gives way to beautiful red berry fruit and rose petals anchored by a rustic minerality and brambly herbs redolent of sage. Although it’s translucent in the glass, it has a surprising amount of tannic structure and grip along with incredibly pure fruit and spice. Try this with spicy carnitas or roasted poultry!
