Chablis! The Beautiful 2022 Vintage from Domaine de L'Enclos, plus great values from JM Brocard...

Domaine de L'Enclos

After the tiny yields in 2021, we're extremely happy to have a sizeable allocation of the beautiful 2022s from Domaine de L'Enclos! As in most of France, the 2022 vintage in Chablis was mostly warm and dry and the resulting wines have lush, expressive fruit but are nicely balanced with good mineral expression and bright acidity - in some cases with ph levels the same as in 2021. At any rate the 2022s from L"Enclos are delicious for current drinking and five to ten years of cellaring for the premier crus. And we're very fortunate to have a good quantity of the unique "A L'Ouest" - no SO2 added, from vines in Beines on shallow soils over limestone above the 1er Cru Vauligneau, out to the west of Chablis (a l'ouest in French also meaning "a bit lost")

In their own words: "We perpetuate with gratitude the know-how of our ancestors Amand and Cléophas Tremblay, our grandparents Gabrielle and André Tremblay and our parents Joëlle and Pascal Bouchard, who have planted, cultivated and finally passed on these vineyards for nearly a hundred years. Our desire: To express each of these terroirs with simple, respectful and unpretentious practices, both in the vineyard and in the cellar." - Romain and Damian Bouchard

Damian and Romain Bouchard

Romain and Damian made wine for years at their family estate, Domaine Pascal Bouchard, then sold the family name and winery midway through the previous decade and retained just shy of thirty hectares of prime vineyard land to create Domaine de L'Enclos. They established a new winery in an old château in the middle of town and promptly set about getting organic certification for the estate.

"Domaine de l'Enclos is 29 hectares of organically farmed vines (Ecocert certification) on the 4 levels of the Chablis designation and notably on some of the most beautiful terroirs of the vineyards.

Most of our work is done in the vineyards. We are 19 people all year round (the triple during the harvest) to take the greatest care of our vineyard to extract the best from it : respectful Poussard pruning, organic fertilizers, disbudding, careful trellising, leaf removal, manual harvesting on all our vintages. We attach great importance to the life of our soils which we maintain by shallow plowing and plantings in the rows. To preventively protect our vines from diseases, we only use products of natural origin, copper, sulfur and plant preparations. The domaine is fully certified in organic agriculture. We vinify in our new gravity-fed cellar. The grapes are harvested at full maturity (no chaptalization), sorted on a vibrating table, pneumatically pressed and the juice flows by gravity into stainless steel tanks installed in an underground cellar where the temperatures are controlled. The vinification is done without any input, no sulfur, with indigenous yeasts. The maturation of our wines in tanks and barrels can last up to 18 months on the lees. The wines are neither fined nor cold treated. Only a light filtration and a moderate addition of sulphur (SO2) is done before bottling.

In summary: living soils, healthy and ripe grapes, simple and natural practices, few interventions, monitoring and patience.

Jean-Marc Brocard

Julien Brocard

This large estate began conversion to organic and biodynamic farming in 1997. While some parcels are now under Julien's name, the majority of the vineyard remains in the JM Brocard estate.  Winemaker Julien Brocard says "We had a long period of dryness in 2022, around two months, but this did not affect the vines. But it did reduce the yield. I think this is because of the work we do in the vineyard, organic viticulture keeping the vines in good shape. We commenced harvest around September 1 and picked over 15 days. We only use natural yeasts for fermentation. It was warm during harvest, so it was important to cool the fruit at reception. We need more and more each year, even if you pick in the morning.”  (Vinous 9/23) The 2022 "Vieilles Vignes de Sainte Claire" is simply delicious and a great value and the 2021 Premier Cru "Montée de Tonnerre" shows the racy texture and fine minerality of this cooler, low-yielding vintage.

Domaine de l'Enclos 2022 Chablis 1er Cru Beauroy

From a parcel of 40 year-old vines, this is lovely, satisfying Chablis, with ripe yellow fruit in the attack and mid-palate and forceful minerality in the finish. This has more cut and brightness than the very good 2020, with lovely citrus and orchard fruits. This is delicious now but is also a good candidate for mid-term aging (the 2016, backward upon release, grew into a beautiful swan with five years in the bottle).

Domaine de l'Enclos 2022 Chablis 1er Cru Vau de Vey

From vines planted in 1979 and farmed by the Bouchards since 2006. This is always steely and precise, a wine that cries out for oysters, clams and anything else from the sea you care to throw at it.

Domaine de l'Enclos 2022 Chablis 1er Cru Fourchaume

Fourchaume rather famously sits above the Grand Crus, just to the north and produces wines of real weight and substance, with serious aging potential. The L'Enclos vines range from 30 to 60 years old.

Domaine de l'Enclos 2022 Chablis 1er Cru Mont de Milieu

From .75 hectares of organically farmed vines dating from 1995 high on the hillside on the western end of the climat (per Jasper Morris). Fermented in wood with native yeasts without batonnage and bottled with minimal sulfur. The ripe and vibrant 2022 Mont de Milieu is perfumed , yellow-fruited, generous, and pretty on the nose. There's a dynamic interplay between the ripe citrus and stone fruit flavors and the snappy oyster shell saltiness on the brisk, energetic palate with a long, lingering succulent finish. Terrific now,  but certainly a good candidate for mid-term aging

Domaine de l'Enclos 2022 Chablis Grand Cru Vaudésir

From .57 hectares of organically farmed vines dating to 1992. The supple palate has good concentration and cut with the ripe stone fruit flavors so prominent in 2022 framed by a sapid earthiness and a long, lifted, expansive finish. This has grand cru class and is a delicious Vaudésir. Decant now or cellar for 5-7 years and beyond. Highly recommended.

Brocard, Jean-Marc 2022 Chablis Vieilles Vignes Sainte-Claire

This large estate began conversion to organic and biodynamic farming in 1997. While some parcels are now under Julien's name, the Sainte-Claire vineyard remains in the JM Brocard estate - the 2022 is quite racy and fine for a 2022. Harvest was done early in the morning, fermentation was with native yeasts. "The palate has a fine lick of salinity on the entry. With fine depth, this linear and taut Chablis will appeal to those seeking a more classic style in this warmer vintage. Excellent." Neal Martin Vinous

Brocard, Jean-Marc 2021 Chablis 1er Cru Montée de Tonnerre

"Sitting to the right of the Grands Crus valley, the Chablis Premier Cru Montée de Tonnerre is without a doubt the most complete of the Premiers Crus: it concentrates minerality, a floral touch and richness into a great vin de garde… it’s for keeping" says JM Brocard. "An abundance of Chablis character suffuses the pretty, even elegant and quite floral nose that includes notes of mineral reduction, iodine, seaweed and apple. The sleek, intense and utterly delicious middleweight flavors possess fine cut and minerality on the finish. Outstanding" says Burghound...
