Share

Today's email features the beautiful Châteauneuf-du-Papes of Jacqueline André at Domain Pierre André - the gorgeous 2020 which has returned to stock and the pure and vibrant 2021 which has just arrived. As Livingstone-Learmonth says in DrinkRhone, the best 2021s are "fruit purity, airborne wines" and the Pierre André is a great example, as is the 2021 "Cuvée Girard" from Raymond Usseglio.

Domain Raymond Usseglio

Since taking over the estate from his father Raymond, Stéphane Usseglio converted the estate to organic and Biodynamic farming (ceritied in 2010) and is now aging in the wines in cement vats and Stockinger casks bringing a new level of complexity and authenticity to the wines. We are very happy to offer the outanding 2021 "Cuvée Girard" - from vines averaging 80 years of age, it's one of the finest and certainly most affordable wines of the vintage, and the 2009, 2012 and 2016 "Cuvée Impériale," from vines planted in 1902.

Also oustanding for quality and value in 2021 is the estate's Cotes du Rhone "Les Claux" -  "This has character, and is authentic, sparked, a very good Côtes du Rhone of terroir" says drinkrhone.

Domain Pierre André

The wines of Jacqueline André are among the very greatest Châteauneuf-du-Papes - they possess the focus and soul of the truly great - when superb farming, old vines, terroir and winemaking come together to create works of art that transcend point scores with their purity, elegance and depth. We're proud to offer the 2020 and 2021 CDP Rouge from this wonderful domain! CSW Price (750ml) $53.99 discountable!

Another Cotes du Rhone that offers Châteauneuf-du-Pape level quality is the new 2022 Cuvee Damon from Laurent Charvin, one of our favorite CDP estates. It has excellent depth and balance and is quite delicious! The 'Damon' parcel is adjacent to the estate and was planted by Laurent's great grandpa Elie 80 years ago and Laurent was just able to purchase it back. It's 90% Grenache and 10% other varieties (mostly Syrah). It's a warm terroir of clay and galets so it shows rather full and broad and tastes like young CdP!

We've added a few or our favorite mature Châteauneuf-du-Papes for current drinking, highlighting the 2012 vintage:

"2012 is an important vintage for Châteauneuf-du-Pape. Meteorologically, the style of the year is one of naturally fresh wines that drink freely. The French word “dentelle” – I translate it probably rather poorly as “toothsome” – applies well. One has the desire to drink another glass, and kick back. This style runs in direct contrast to the sort of wines that have been made in the past two decades, when power and dollops of sweet richness have been literally the flavour of the day. 2012 is a very good, expressive vintage!" with agree whole-heartedly with Livingstone-Learmonth regarding the 2012s, as recent tastings of both southern and northern Rhones have been delightful, really singing.

Last on today's list is the bright and beautiful 2012 Clos des Papes Blanc which was a suberb combination of freshness and ripe complexity when tasted a few months back...

Pierre Andre 2021 Châteauneuf-du-Pape

(CSW price $53.99) The very fine and elegant 2021 Pierre Andre Chateauneuf-du-Pape shows a deep red garnet color, with subtle aromas of plum, rosehip, violet, red currant and tart cherry with citrus and earth. Black cherry, cassis, garrigue, minerals and firm acidity on the palate with pretty red fruits emerging with air, finishing with minerals and bright acidity. There is power here at 14.5 % alc, but in a stylish Burgundian frame. On day two the elegance is further revealed with a beuatiful chalky texture, fabulous length of sappy red fruits and minerals, all in finesse as is usually the case with the wines of Jacqueline André. Highly recommended. David Lillie

Pierre Andre 2020 Châteauneuf-du-Pape

(CSW price $53.99) We consider Domaine Pierre André to be one of the greatest estates in Châteuneuf-du-Pape. Organic since 1980 (one of the first in the AOC) and Biodynamic since 1992. The red is 90% Grenache with Syrah, Mourvèdre, Cinsault, Vaccarèse, Counoise, Muscadin and Picpoul. Some parcels are over 100 years old, with the average vine age around 65 years. Tasted with Jacqueline in January, the wine was quite remarkable, showing a relatively light red/garnet color with lovely aromas of tart cherry, red currant, rose and violet. The plate was supple, not heavy, with complex red fruits, earth and minerals with silky fresh tannins, finishing with terrific length of red currant and berries. "Un gourmandise" said Jacqueline and we couldn't agree more - but obviously built to age as well. David Lillie  (CSW Price $53.99)

Pierre Andre 2019 Châteauneuf-du-Pape Magnum

(CSW price $99.99) The superb 2019 Pierre André CDP Rouge is 90% Grenache with Syrah, Mourvèdre, Cinsault, Vaccarèse, Counoise, Muscadin and Picpoul. Some parcels are over 100 years old, with the average vine age around 65 years. From drinkrhone: "handsome dark red robe; the nose has depth from within, a really inviting aroma of finely sweet plums, with some cedar, gently perfumed notes around them. It’s a very good start. The palate runs with a stately roll of red stone fruits, lovely engagement thanks to its stylish gras, its spherical shape most appealing. The balance is good. This is Châteauneuf of terroir, no make-up added, is a very bonny Grenache-inspired wine, has smoky, tobacco, menthol tones late on. Much harmony here, not sure what else one could demand from it - way to go, Jacqueline!" Drink 2025 - 2050. (CSW price $99.99)

Usseglio, Raymond 2021 Châteauneuf-du-Pape Cuvée Girard

Stephane Usseglio has made another very attractive "Girard" in 2021 - is it the best value of this vintage? Approximately 90% Grenache, 4% Mourvèdre, 4% Syrah, 2% Cinsault and 2% Counoise, averaging 80 years of age.  "Steady red robe; the nose has appealing clarity, leads on raspberry, brisk red cherry fruit, with a discreet note of herbs, dusty trails. There’s a hint of reduction, so decanting an aid. The palate plays to the virtues of the vintage via its crystalline red fruits, the tannins bright and in sync. It’s an en finesse, precise, most attractive Châteauneuf, well in tune with the usual house style. . 14.5°.  Drink from mid-2024, its fresh manner allowing early drinking, until 2044." drinkrhone

Usseglio, Raymond 2021 Cotes du Rhone Les Claux (Arrives 4/2)

"(Sample from concrete vat) steady level red robe; the nose has a southern, friendly, black olives aroma, with a black fruit jam core. The palate bears well judged richness, ticks over until accelerating well and strikingly into the finish, has gusto that marks it out in 2021. This has character, and is authentic, sparked, a very good STGT (Soil To Glass Transfer) Côtes, a real traveller. It’s on top of its tannins, a definite merit in 2021. 14°. From mid-2023. drink until 2033-35." drinkrhone

Charvin 2022 Cotes du Rhone "Damon"

The 2022 Charvin Cotes du Rhone "Damon" - The parcel is adjacent to the estate and was planted by Laurent's great grandpa Elie 80 years ago and Laurent was just able to purchase it back. It's 90% Grenache and 10% other varieties (mostly Syrah). It's a warm terroir of clay and galets so it shows a rather full palate, but is nicely balanced and tastes like a young Chateauneuf-du-Pape!

Chapelle St. Theodoric 2016 Chateauneuf du Pape Les Sablons

Chappelle St. Theodoric - a project of winemaker Bapiste Grangeon and Peter Weygandt - has quickly become one of our favorite Southern Rhône producers. The domaine is comprised of two parcels of Grenache vines (each ranging in age between 50-100 years): La Guigasse, a soil of pure sand, and Le Grand Pin, a terroir of pure sand at the top of Pignan - and famously neighboring Château Rayas. "Les Sablons" is Grenache from both parcels, which sees whole-cluster vinification, and aging in demi-muids. The 2016 is a bolder and richer vintage than most: it will still carry the aromatics and floral traits of Chapelle St. Theodoric's wines, yet with beautiful undercurrents of black raspberry, red flowers, fresh red cherry and a long finish of cassis and bright plum. An elegant wine that can be aged for quite some time, or enjoyed now after an hour decant. JDC

Clos des Papes 2012 Châteauneuf-du-Pape Blanc

The estate's outstanding white wine is made from 3 hectares on clay-sandy, galet stone covered soils mainly on La Croze, usually from equal shares of Grenache blanc (richness), Roussanne (gras), Clairette (elegance), Bourboulenc (acidity), Picpoul (acidity), Picardin (elegance, since 2000), “Picpoul & Bourboulenc hyper important for the acidity in the wine” - Vincent Avril. Steel vat fermented at 12°-16°C, raised on lees 6 months, fined before Christmas, malo blocked.  2012: "shiny, fine yellow; white peach, appealing summer scents and flowers on the nose: an interesting bouquet, has genuine Rhône depth, gras and bounty that are well channelled. There is a very good transfer from the nose to the palate: the white fruits are fine, accompanied by licorice and aniseed. Tender wine which is a good whole, while its acidity and degree work together. Hazelnut is marked, while there is a nectarine skin taste also. There is round, appealing late content, a delightful final point of aniseed. The texture and aroma are lovely here. “The Picpoul and the Bourboulenc are hyper important in a year like this; the Grenache blanc risks too high a degree; maturity was very good this year,” Vincent Avril. “Drink it with turbot, salmon, lobster à la plancha.” Drink until 2015, then it will shut down, so revert from 2021. Less Grenache blanc this year (10%) after coulure and and 1% more of each of the other varieties. Drink until 2035" - drinkrhone

Usseglio, Raymond 2016 Châteauneuf-du-Pape Cuvée Impérial

This is certainly one of the finest of the 2016 Châteauneuf-du-Papes! (6 stars from drinkrhone) 90-95% Grenache planted in 1901-02, from sandy soils on Les Pialons, La Girardette, 10% Counoise, Cinsault, Terret Noir, Clairette, 40% destemmed, aged in concrete vats. "...full red robe. The bouquet lies in wait thanks to the pedigree and natural thickness of the black fruits from the old Grenache vines, has an established oiliness from them, and shows cool sides outside them. Prune, a touch of leather feature. The palate is rich and rolling with a gentle wave of spherical content and luxurious, natural tannins that lead into black olives, and lightly salted finish. This is unhurried wine, with great ageing potential, and, mercifully, no headiness. The layers of fruit and content are impressive. Drink from 2022, so there can be an extra level of variety and stimulation. I can wish for no more from this great Châteauneuf."

Usseglio, Raymond 2012 Châteauneuf-du-Pape Cuvée Imperial Magnum (4/2)

The 2012 "Cuvee Imperiale" should be singing now in 2024, showing the lovely brightness of this well-balanced vintage, but of course itwill go another 10 to 15 years. "Deftly blends power and vivacity and finishes with harmonious tannins and outstanding length" said Vinous in 2015. Yum!

The 2009 is a less tannic and more ready-to-drink version of the 2016 - beautiful now and for another 8 to 10 yeaars.

Chapelle St. Theodoric 2012 Châteauneuf du Pape Le Grand Pin 1.5 L

Chapelle Saint-Theodoric is a joint venture between the Grangeon family of Domaine de Cristia and their USA importer Peter Weygandt. Le Grand Pin is all Grenache from the Pignan vineyard on sandy soils. Whole-cluster fermentation in concrete vat with wild yeasts, minimal extraction, aged in 4 to 10 year-old large casks. The 2012 is a beautiful old-fashioned Chateauneuf that is all finesse and beauty, very Burgundian in style and absoulutely delicious. The wine shows elegant aromas of black cherry, raspberry, violet, roast meat, graphite, citrus and Provencal garrigue, quite complex. There is intense sappy fruit on the palate with elegant cherry, raspberry, dark chocolate and earth. Very long, dense and ripe but balanced and bright, not at all heavy or over-extracted. The finish is lovely with sappy fruit and mineral flavors lingering on the palate. Delicious as a young wine, this should cellar beautifully, best perhaps 2023 - 2030. DL

Charvin 2010 Châteauneuf-du-Pape

(An open bottle of this showed up at the store a few weeks ago - it was fabulous...go for it!) 6 stars from drinkrhone!  What a treat - one of the top CDPs of 2010, now reaching maturity! What follows is our review from 2015. "The 2010 Charvin is indeed a beautiful Chateauneuf that shows a bright black/garnet color with very floral and sweet aromas of crushed  blackberry with a bit of tart plum, quite pure and pretty with hints of  black raspberry, brown spice, garrigue, licorice, earth and roast meat emerging with aeration. The palate is dense and sapid but beautifully balanced with sweet blackberry and black cherry fruit with game, spice, earth, tea and citrus. The finish is firm and long with dense red currant fruit, licorice, spicy citrus and earthy flavors that linger on the palate. This is a superb Châteauneuf-du-Pape that can be enjoyed immensely now or cellared until 2032 - 2035."  David Lillie (2015 tasting)

Charvin 2016 Châteauneuf-du-Pape Arrives 4/2

Our quick drop of the Charvin 2016 at the importers tasting left us convinced that this is a superb, elegant, old-school Châteauneuf that is worth having in your cellar. We quote the reliable, somewhat English notes of our friend John Livingstone Learmonth on his wonderful website, drinkrhone: "deep, dark red colour. The bouquet packs in a variety of upbeat influences – massed herbs including sage, laurel, with cooked Damson plums from the Grenache, spice and oiliness. The palate is extremely coherent, a really good whole, full of heart and genuine, from the vineyard density. The flavour rests on spiced plum fruits for now, with tea, black olives notes towards the wide and long finish. The tannins have spark, a rockiness that gives the wine a leg of momentum as it ends. This is very good. It can become a major Châteauneuf-du-Pape, with definite individuality and complexity." Although this wine will cellar beautifully for 20 to 25 years, it's also a superb Châteauneuf for drinking now, displaying the perfect balance of 2016 without excessive tannins. David Lillie

Ferrand 2009 Chateauneuf-du-Pape 1.5 liter (Arrives 4/2)

The Ferrand 2009 CDP is from 7.5 hectares of very old vines in the northern sector on sandy and galets roulets soils. Primarily Grenache, with small amounts of Syrah, Cinsault, Mourvedre and Bourboulenc. Farming here has always been with organic methods, though not certified, and vinification and aging is in concrete vats, with minimal use of SO2. "quite a dark robe; crunchy, grilled airs in a youthful nose – a sense of black fruit liqueur. The palate starts roundly and juicily. There is a combination of blackberry and mulberry in the flavour – this traces a direct line to the finish. where there is a degree of clarity. Good, has the depth of wines from the northern sector, is secure to the end. A complete wine with good local drive. Drink until 2027" 5 Stars drinkrhone
