All these growers work in the most “natural” way possible, avoiding chemical treatments in the vineyards and the use of selected yeasts or additives of any kind in the cellar.  Hand harvesting, low yields, old vines and minimal intervention in the winemaking process produce wines that brilliantly express the terroir and the hard work of these dedicated producers. Please visit the fabulously informative website www.louisdressner.com for more information on these great estates! Bellivière 2021 Coteaux du Loir L'Effraie

"L'Effraie" is from Bellivière's younger Coteaux du Loir vines, across 11 parcels totaling 3.5 hectares. These gobelet-pruned, 10-30 year-old vines are planted on flinty, sandy clay soils over tuffeau (soft limestone), are certified-biodynamic  "This young vines cuvée opens with a nose of crystalline mirabelle and rose petals; it is absolutely enchanting. The palate presents a supple and lightly grained texture, dainty and light-footed, with a core of delicately spiced white peach dusted with a sprinkling of cinnamon powder. This is charming, the residual sugar is 3 g/l  (sec) and the alcohol on the label 13%." Wine Doctor  Flashing an almost neon chartreuse yellow green hue , the nose is electric with minerality, herbaceousness and green mirabelle/pear. Electric acidity on the palate with more cool minerality underscored by green fruit paired with a silky body belies it's 13% abv from a very cool vintage in a cooler Loire subregion. Effraie means scary which I guess, given it's tone in 2021, is aptly named for it's ghostlike greenish profile! GH

Pinon 2022 Vouvray Buvez du Bon Pinon

From the estate's website: "This is the renaissance of a cuvée created by my great-grandfather - a dry wine from our oldest parcel, planted in 1945 on soils of silex noir and vinfied in our oldest foudres - old 'tonneaux' from Porto purchased by my grandfather. We're using the label from the 1950s as well as the name of the cuvée - the famous 'Buvéz du Bon Pinon.' The fermentation lasted 2 to 3 months with only wild yeasts, which participate in the effect of 'terroir.' The fermentation was stopped by chilling the juice, followed by a soutirage, the wine then aged for 5 months in the old tonneaux. Aging potential of 15 to 20 years, serve with shellfish, oysters, cold fish, vegetable terrines, choucroute de la mer, rillettes and rillons." 2022: 13.2% alcohol, 1 gr/liter RS (totally dry!), 4.8 gr/liter total acidity.

Pinon 2022 Vouvray Les Déronnières

The grapes for "Les Déronnières" from Julien Pinon (first made in 2014)  used to be included in the Silex Noir, but this wonderful vineyard, the Pinon's best parcel on a hill-top directly above their cellar, much deserves to be bottled on its own.  The very thin topsoil is clay with silex over Turonian limestone, and the beautiful exposure gives ripe fruit that is normally vinified as a demi-sec, but in recent vintages the RS level has been below 10 gr/l making it dry, in Vouvray anyway. The 2022 finished with just 1 gram RS and 4.5 grams acidity, making this bone-dry but dense and beautifully balanced "Deronnieres" showing elegant aromas of lime-flower, dried pear, lemon zest and stones. The palate is very dense and ripe, saline and mineral with round white fruits, citrus and herbal notes with fabulous length. A great dry Vouvray with fantastic minerality which is a versatile "food wine" to enjoy now, but don't forget that this wine will age forever....save some for the next generation!

Pinon, François 2022 Vin de France Petillant Naturel Rosé

50% Cot and 50% Grolleau, organically farmed in Vouvray by Julien Pinon, partially from very old vines of Cot planted by Julien's great-grandfather. This is an elegant and very delicious Pet Nat that will accompany just about anything and is delightful as an aperitif by itself. The aromas are quite pretty with ripe raspberry, strawberry and red currant with hints of rose and blood orange. The palate is fresh and creamy with raspberry and tart strawberry with a nice mineral kick and sappy fruit in the refreshing finish.

Bonhomme, Pierre-Olivier 2022 Vin de France Tesniere Blanc (Menu Pineau)

Menu Pineau, also known as "Arbois" is described in Wine Grapes  (J. Robinson et al.) as "an old variety from the Val de Loire named after its similarity to Gros Pineau (Chenin Blanc)...although it has nothing to do with the village called Arbois in the Franche-Comté." It is an offspring of Gouais Blanc, along with many other European grapes, and is "a little more rustic, but less acid than Chenin Blanc," according to Thierry Puzelat. The 2022 La Tesnière Blanc by Pierre-Olivier Bonhomme is from organically-grown vines, 75% Menu Pineau and 25% Chenin Blanc. The wine shows a bright pale gold color, with subtle aromas of grapefruit, dried pear and apple, dried herbs, nettle, lemon peel, stone and caramel. The palate is austere and stony, with firm acidity and flavors of hazelnut, citrus, baked apple, earth and brown spice. A really fascinating wine and a great pairing with sushi, grilled fish with fennel, lemon chicken, aged goat cheeses and much more. Highly recommended to lovers of unique natural wines.

Villemade, Herve 2020 Cour-Cheverny Les Acacias

Romorantin, the official grape of the Cour-Cheverny AOC, appreciates sandy clay/limestone soils where it offers a wine of great character that mixes elegant vegetal and floral notes (cut grass, violets, a touch of mint), often slightly honeyed with notes of ripe fruit (roast pear) lightly marked by the elevage in old barrels. The finish is fresh, tight with saline minerals and bitter anise. A wine with good aging potential." (Villemade.net)  In 2020, the "Les Acacias" is again simply outstanding and very distinctive, offering aromas of ripe peach and pear with spice, floral, caramel and oxidative notes. The palate is very round and ripe, with stone, peach, earth and almond flavors, with fabulous length with honeyed lemon, anise and minerals.

Combel La Serre 2020 Cahors Cuvée Chateau

Combel's Château Cuvée comes from estate plots totalling 3 hectares around their home village of Cournou on the limestone plateau known as the Causse at about 320m altitude. The soils for this bottling are mainly red clay with some limestone rock. The organically farmed vines average 40 years old and are kept to a yield of 40 hl/ha.  Because of the clay-heavy terroir and winemaking and aging choices, the 2020 Château Cuvée marks a signficant step up in body, tannin and complexity compared to the lighter, softer Pur Fruit bottling. This is a beautiful Cahors showing elegant, earthy red and black fruit aromas - the palate is dense, sapid and pure, very focused with good acidity and bright black raspberry and red currant fruit, mineral, floral and long. Delicious now, this will develop nicely over the next five years or more

Monte Dall' Ora 2020 Valpolicella Classico Superior Camporenzo

50% Corvina/30% Corvinone/20% Rondinella. Monte Dall’Ora’s Camporenzo vineyard is a few kilometers from the home vineyard and is similar in its hilliness and its crumbly limestone soils over limestone rock. Traditional Valpolicella varieties were planted in 2008, trained in guyot rather than in pergola for greater concentration in this cru Superiore bottling. The farming is biodynamic and the harvest is by hand into small bins. The fruit is destemmed and gently pressed; spontaneous fermentation takes place with native yeasts and without sulfur in concrete and steel tanks (from which the short-fermentation-and-maceration Saseti wine has been removed). Maceration lasts 7-8 days with periodic manual punch-downs. The wine is aged for about 6 months in tank and then 6 months in old 25-hectoliter oak botti. The wine is bottled without filtration and with a small amount of sulfur.

Monte Dall' Ora 2018 Valpolicella Classico Superior San Georgio Alto

San Giorgio is several miles NW of the home vineyard, on the limestone-rich hill closest to Lake Garda. The southwest-facing parcel of 25-40-year-old vines is a steep hike up to 500+ meters, completely isolated and surrounded by forest and other wild growth. As for their other vineyards, the farming is biodynamic and the harvest by hand. The bunches are destemmed and fermented spontaneously with native yeasts and without sulfur in concrete and steel tanks. Maceration lasts 8-10 days with manual punch-downs. The wine is aged for a year in a 25-hectoliter botte previously used to age their Amarone. It is bottled without filtration and aged 6 more months.

Marino, Salvatore 2022 Terre Siciliane Turi Bianco (Orange)

The Salvatore Marino "Turi" Bianco is produced in the renowned “Contrada Buonivini” near Pachino. Catarratto is one of the few autochthonous white varieties that has always been cultivated in Pachino. It is known locally as "Mantiddatu" (Mantle).("Turi" is the local way of saying Salvatore in Sicily.) The inspiration for the labels comes from Futurism, an Italian literary, artistic and musical movement of the beginning of the 20th century. The bianco label depicts the muscular red arm of a worker (worker in the vineyard), which raises a simple (tavern) glass of wine, the same one where our grandparents drank (none of them ever had wine glasses).  The grapes are destemmed, macerated for five days then ferment with indigenous yeasts in stainless steel tanks. After malolactic fermentation, the wine is decanted and racked off its gross lees. It then ages in concrete until its bottled the spring following harvest.

Bellivière 2022 Jasnières Prémices

The Belliviere Jasnieres "Prémices" is a selection of the most fruit-forward barrels and is the first release in any given vintage. The fruit comes from vines ranging from 10-40 years old, planted on variations on flinty clay soils over tuffeau (soft limestone). . The bunches are direct-pressed into tank, where the juice settles overnight; it is moved by gravity into barrel, where it ferments with native yeasts and minimal sulfur. The wine ages in barrel for about a year. There is usually residual sugar, as fermentation is never pushed and stops short of dryness in this cool cellar and climat. The 2022 Prémices finished at a sec-tendre level of sweetness with 10 grams/liter of residual sugar (and 3.82 grams/liter of acidity). The wine shows a lovely gold color and beautifully ripe aromas of quince, lemon verbena, lime-flower and stone. The palate is elegant, round and silky with  citrus, white fruit, chamomille, chalk and mineral flavors, perfectly balanced, with the RS blending with the firm acidity. Just a beautiful wine. This wonderfully affirms the style of demi-sec or sec-tendre Chenin on limestone/clay soils, which many growers feel is the perfect expression of grape and terroir. Enjoy immensely over the next 8 to 10 years.

Bellivière 2021 Coteaux du Loir Hommage à Louis Derré

Without hesitation, this cuvée belongs to the pantheon of the best reds made in the Loire Vallée. If you had to taste only 1 Pineau d'Aunis, it should probably be this cuvée, for you to understand the complexity, delicacy, sensuality of the under-considered grape varieties. Made from century-year old vines preserved with deep love and passion by Eric and Clément Nicolas, this special cuvée paying tribute to Louis Derré, the vigneron-farmer who sold the Ferme de Bellivière to Eric and taught him a lot, is only produced in the best vintages

Villemade, Herve 2022 Touraine Pinot Noir

Hervé's Pinot Noir is positively delicious in 2022, showing  bit more weight and ripeness than usual in this sunny vintagae.! Crunchy red fruit on the nose, red apple skins and bing cherries, with lush plum and cherry fruit on the palate with a touch of spice and herbaceous notes. It's very "calcaire" and quite lush in this vintage, and there is a really lovely, mature Pinot character that is hiding behind the bright fruit and terroir. Though refreshing and charming now, it should develop some more weight and elegance with 1-3 years in bottle.

Combel La Serre 2021 Cahors Pur Fruit du Causse

The Combel la Serre "Pur Fruit" is 100% Malbec  from seven different sites around their home village of Cournou, which lies on the Causse, a limestone plateau in Cahors at 320m elevation. Planted on clay-limestone soils, the vines are certified organic and average 35 years old. The grapes are hand-harvested and crushed with 20% whole clusters; the juice ferments at cool temperatures with indigenous yeasts in cement tanks with a 10-day skin maceration. The wine is aged on its lees in cement through the winter and bottled in the spring.  The 2021 is another vibrant fruit-bomb showing a deep red/black color with aromas of ripe blackberry liqueur with violet and citrus hints. The palate is bright, supple and sappy with dense blackberry and black raspberry fruit, lifted by bright acidity - quite lush and ripe but refreshing and balanced. The cool, sappy fruits continue in the bright finish. Perfect with a steak or stew or just gulped by itself  - serve cool and enjoy!

The certified-organic vines average 40 years old and are planted on red and yellow clay soils over limestone bedrock. This is a quite serious Cahors showing a dark red/black color and beautiful black raspberry and blackberry fruit aromas with hints of dark chocolate and stone. The palate is supple and dense, quite elegant and not tannic, very  full-bodied and really showing the clay/limestone terroir, with a long finish of bright red and black fruits. 100% Chardonnay. 2022 is only the third vintage of méthode-ancestrale white from Renardat-Fâche, made from a small amount of certified-organic grapes on limestone soils purchased from a friend in Bugey. Hand-harvested, fermented with native yeasts in tank, bottled at 6% alcohol, kept on the lees for a year and finished technically dry (5-7 grams RS/liter) at around 10.5%.. JP says it's gently dry, a touch chalky in flavor and feel, yellow apple-y, soft bubbles, kinda crisp and round at once.  Aperitif wine all day long...

Renardat-Fache NV (2022) Vin de France Comme dans la cave a Mémé

A new still wine from Renardat-Fache! The first vintage of this still, red, dry, Gamay (as opposed to their more famous Cerdon du Bugey) was 2018. This particular non-vintage "vintage" of the wine is a blend of 70% 2022 and 30% 2021. The bunches are destemmed and fermented spontaneously with native yeasts and without sulfur. The maceration lasts around a week. The wine is aged in old foudres, one of which is depicted on the very lively label, in the cellar of Elie Renardat's grandmother Mémé's house (hence the name of the wine). The wine is bottled without filtration and with a small amount of sulfur. Very small production. Absolutely delicious!

I Vigneri (Foti) 2022 Vino Rosato Vinudilice (Etna)

Perched 1200 meters up on Etna's volcanic slope, the Vigna Bosco vineyard is filled with many centenarian vines of a mix of varieties. The vines here represent Etna's -- and Sicily's -- vinous history: Spaniards brought Grenache (locally known as Alicante), the white-skinned Grecanico from Greece, and assorted varieties known as "Francisi" because of their probable French origin. The team at I Vigniri are careful not to disturb the unique DNA of their antique vines, so a mule is employed to move between the head-trained vines to avoid toppling them. All of this would mean little if the wine wasn't delicious -- luckily, it is!  This would be great with a pesto sauce, aged cheeses, or gamier meats.
