Having now been able to fully unpack after our move, we have found a small stash of wines we have been holding for reasons that we can no longer recall. With that being the case... Cheers!

Baudry 2018 Chinon Le Clos Guillot

Le Clos Guillot is a beautiful south-east facing vineyard, just east of the town of Chinon, above the Clos de l'Olive and adjacent to Le Chêne Vert. The upper slope of the parcel is clay over limestone (the lower part has sand and gravel over the rock, which permitted a tiny separate production from franc de pied vines, now mostly deceased) and the vines are young, planted from 1993 to 2000. Fermentation in wooden cuves, 12 months of aging in three to ten year-old barriques, 9 additional months in unlined cement vats. We have been buying this wine since it's first production in 2000 – it's one of the most elegant and Burgundian of Chinons. It's become incrreasingly difficult to write superlatives about this wine, as each vintage since 2014 has been superb in it's own way. And now 2018, a vintage the Baudrys describe as "magnificent!" The ripeness of fruit in this vintage diplays a different side of Cabernet Franc with the more traditional light raspberry/strawberry aromatics enhanced by darker fruits: blackberry, black raspberry and boysenberry with violet and earth, that remain vibrant and bright. The color is deep black with a purple rim. The palate shows sensational purity, freshness and elegance with a fabulous dense, silky, calcaire texture and fabulous length of pure black fruits and minerals. While this wine is amazingly delicious now, it should be very interesting with long cellaring as well. Highly recommended!  David Lillie

Baudry 2018 Chinon Cuvée Domaine

The Baudry "Cuvee Domaine" is near and dear to my heart, and not just because of the modest price. 75% of the blend is from a parcel in Saint-Louans, a spot where the thin clay/limestone soils give earthy well-structured wines, and which has been the source of some of my favorite Chinons, such as the legendary Clos du Parc de Saint-Louans of Louis Farou. 25%  of the blend is from gravel soils near Cravant, giving supple fruit and freshness. This is a great combination, making the wine enjoyable to drink young but with the structure and minerality of the more "serious" terroir. The 2017, for example is delicious to drink now, the 2010 is really singing and the 1989... if you can find one, let me know. The 2018 Domaine is a bit unusual in that the fermentation finished with 1.7 gr/liter of residual sugar, still a dry wine but forcing them to filter, which the Baudrys never do. At any rate, the wine is sensational - floral and elegant with aromas of black raspberry liqueur; the palate shows high-toned ripe black fruits, with violet and stone and a very long ripe finish. Enjoy in its exuberant youth or hold for ten years and more as the terroir shines through.  David Lillie

Baudry 2019 Chinon Cuvée Domaine

The Baudry Chinon "Domaine" is always one of our favorite reds from the Loire Valley and it's a sensational value as well.   All Cabernet Franc of course, a blend of 75% from a parcel in St. Louans, where the thin clay/limestone soils give earthy well-structured wines, with 25% from gravel soils near Cravant, giving supple fruit and freshness. Organic farming, wild-yeast fermentation, aging in 5 to 10 year-old wooden vats and cement with almost no added SO2. The 2019 Domaine  shows a deep red/black color and beautiful fresh aromas of ripe red and black fruits with hints of earth, roast meat, black pepper and violet. The palate is dense and sapid with supple strawberry and blackberry liqueur, lacking a bit of the sweet, lush character of the 2018, but showing more underlying mineral flavors lifted by bright acidity. The fruit is quite ripe but the wine is beautifully balanced - it's delicious now and will be singing in 2031 as well. Highly recommended.   David Lillie

Baudry 2019 Chinon Les Grézeaux

One of the most pleasurable red wines of the Loire Valley, the Baudry Chinon Les Grézeaux is from a unique parcel of sixty year-old vines near the bottom of the slope in Sonnay (near Cravant-les-Coteaux) on a bed of gravel over a base of clay, sand and limestone. The grapes are harvested by hand of course and fermented with wild yeasts with zero SO2 added during vinification. Beginning in 2017, the wine ages in large cement vats by Nico Velo, which are slightly porous. Les Grézeaux always has an elegant silky texture and wonderful freshness, making it delicious as a young wine, combined with the ability to age beautifully for 20 years and more in good vintages.  The 2019 shows a dark black/purple color with quite floral blackberry and strawberry aromas, with a bit of earth, spice and citrus. Very silky and supple on the palate  with deep stony black fruits, meaty, chalky and long. Good acidity in the finish with graphite and velvety black fruits, quite elegant, very sapid and long. This is a lovely "Les Grézeaux" and is highly recommended for early drinking or ten to twenty  years of cellaring.  David Lillie

Baudry 2020 Chinon Cuvée Domaine

Back in stock, not much left!  The Baudry Chinon "Domaine" is always one of our favorite reds from the Loire Valley and it's a sensational value as well.   All Cabernet Franc of course, a blend of 75% from a parcel in St. Louans, where the thin clay over limestone soils give earthy well-structured wines, with 25% from gravel soils near Cravant, giving supple fruit and freshness. Organic farming, wild-yeast fermentation, aging in 5 to 10 year-old wooden vats and cement with almost no added SO2. The 2020 shows a pretty red/black color with bright rim. The aromas are quite floral and bright, a pretty melange of boysenberry, black raspberry and tart cherry, very pure with hints of earth and pepper. The palate is supple, sapid and ripe and the tannins are firm. At 13% alcohol, the balance seems perfect. Firm acidity and mineral flavors are mostly hidden under the beautiful melange of ripe red and black fruits. This is a beautiful "Cuvée Domaine" that is sensational now, served slightly cool, and that will cellar ten years and more due to the firm acidity. We loved the rather brawny 2019 which needs a few more years to drink at its best - drink the 2020 while you wait but put some away as well. Very highly recommended, and thanks to the Baudrys for producing such honest and soulful wines. David Lillie

Baudry 2020 Chinon La Croix Boissée Blanc

This rare and beautiful Chenin Blanc is from the top of the "Croix Boissée" parcel on eroded limestone. The wine ferments very slowly in 500 liter toneaux until dry - less than 2 g/l residual sugar.  "Croix Boissée Blanc 2020 : Classical expression of Chinon Blanc with less alcohol than 2019 and nice acidity at the end. No residual sugar. Malo done as usual. La Croix Boissée Blanc 2020 shows like many vintages those nice notes of anise or fennel with a hint of white apricots. The wine is not big but still salty/mineral. It makes you salivate and calls you for another glass." - Matthieu Baudry  This has become one of the finest Chenins of the Loire with beautiful expression of the limestone soil in this lighter vintage.  Very limited quantity available.

Chidaine 2017 Montlouis Sur Loire Les Bournais

This is usually our favorite wine from François and Manuela Chidaine, long-time champions of organic and biodynamic farming in the Loire Valley. Named after the soil type "Les Bournais," a unique clay topsoil over limestone (tuffeau blanche) also found across the river in Vouvray and without the silex present in most Montlouis terroirs. The 2017 is a beautiful example of this wine with lovely aromas of lemon confit, kiwi, pear, lime-flower, honey and earth, with subtle hints of crushed raspberry as well. The palate is dense and creamy with chalky ripe pear and citrus fruits with a long, lush finish of stone, white fruits, anise and citrus. (Lush but dry at only 2.3 gr RS/L) This is a beautiful Montlouis that will perfectly accompany lobster,  fish or white meats in sauce, Asian foods and goat cheeses. It's delicious now, and should be very interesting after ten to fifteen years in the cellar.  David Lillie

Guion 2014 Bourgueil Cuvée Deux Monts

(Last 60  btls of the 2014, arrives 7/26)  From  70-year-old vines in "Petits Monts" and "Grand Monts" towards the top of the slope above Benais, facing roughly south-west, clay over Turonien limestone (tuffeau, craie micacée). This is the terroir giving the most elegant and age-worthy Bourgueils and 2014 is a particularly good vintage for Loire reds to age.  18-month élevage ; 40% in cuve inox, 20% in one new 400 liter barrel, 20% in one-year and 20% in two-year old barrels, assembled two months before bottling.  Tasted in February 2016, the wine was fairly closed and tight, with deep, pure black fruits and perfect balance. This will be a sensational mature wine, best to wait eight to ten years, or more, then drink until 2040.

Huet 1997 Vouvray Clos du Bourg Moelleux 1er Trie

A great Clos du Bourg Moelleux, bursting with exotic fruit aromas. The palate is fat but with good mineral character beneath. Less acidity than 1996 but enough to keep it for quite a while and quite a bit more sugar. Drink now for the ripe exuberant fruit but I would not be surpised if this cellars well too...

Pépière 2017 Muscadet Sèvre et Maine Clisson

The 2017 "Clisson" reminds us of the superb 2014 - subtle, fine and elegant, and at the same time dense and powerful, yet with only 12.5 % alcohol. The wine shows a very pale bronze color lovely aromas of lemon zest, fresh herbs, stone, almond and dried pear and apple, very elegant, with hints of pineapple, anise and brown spice. The palate shows nice ripeness, density and weight but remains delicate and fresh with pear, citrus zest and intense mineral flavors with a finish that is very long and lemony and slightly astringent with food-friendly minerality. The 2017 Clisson is a delightful wine - serve as often as possible with oysters, little-necks, grilled seafood and roast chicken. Put some in the cellar to enjoy over its  20+ year evolution while enjoying with fish in sauce and shellfish. Thank you Marc, Remi and Gwenaëlle for another beautiful wine!

Pépière 2019 Muscadet Sèvre et Maine Clisson Cru Communal

Beginning in 2005, Domaine de la Pépière has produced this cuvée from a small parcel of 50 to 110 year-old vines within the Pepiere vineyard. Originally called "Granite de Clisson" after the unique bedrock in the vineyard, Marc has changed the name to "Clisson" to agree with the new INAO Cru Communal classification. The granite is covered with gravel and clay with large stones, ensuring good drainage and deep penetration by the roots into the fissures in the bedrock, bringing the mineral elements indispensable to this wine. This note from Gwénaëlle Croix of Pépière: "We bottled the 2019 Clisson in November of 2021, after two years aging on the lies, as we always do. It comes from a hot, sunny vintage, thus the alcohol percentage is relatively high at 13.5%, but one really doesn't sense it. The palate is full and framed in very firm acidity and citrus flavors, with a slight touch of smokiness (un petit côté fumé)." The Pépière Clisson is always one of the most elegant, silky and ethereal of all Muscadet - don't miss it!

Pepiere 2020 Muscadet Sèvre et Maine Briords VV

(The importer now promises 5 more cases Just arrived in NY) First produced in 1988, this great Muscadet is made from a three hectare parcel of old massale-selection vines (all over 60 years old, with a high percentage much older) on a slope above the Maine. The bedrock is Granite de Château Thébaud, a fissured rock that allows the vines to penetrate deeply, with ideal thin topsoils of clay, with sand and gravel allowing good drainage. Some notes on the 2020 from Rémi Branger: "The harvest in 2020 was very early as the vintage was quite ahead of schedule. We began the overall harvest on the 24th of August (this year we'll start around Sept 15th) and picked the Briords quite early - we wanted to keep the freshness and acidity as the maturity was advancing rapidly. We bottled Briords in May as usual - we have in 2020 more freshness and tension than in 2018 and 2019 with the slight bitterness that we like a bit more present. "As Rémi says "more freshness and tenson" in this wine which makes it a great candidate for aging and we found that decanting or opening well in advance is called for if enjoying now. Best perhaps 2024 - 2040.  David Lillie

Pépière 2021 Muscadet Sèvre et Maine Les Gras Moutons

(Arrives 5/23)  Les Gras Moutons is a great parcel on gneiss, in layers that permit a deep penetration by the vines, with sandy clay and amphibolite stones. The vines are at the top of a hill and on the south facing slope overlooking the Maine. (The name, by the way, does not refer to fat sheep, despite their presence on the label, but rather in local dialect, to the hilltop vineyard site.) This terroir produces lovely, classic Muscadet to drink over the next 5 to 8 years."It has a more perfumed and precise style than the granite cuvées (in 2021), although the wafting aromatics of crushed chalk and white peach feel familiar. The palate has a nice tension though, with a polished richness countered by a chalky oyster-shell freshness, with a white-peach purity. It is pervaded by a fine grip, with firm phenolics, and modest acidity."(winedoctor)

Pinon 2019 Vouvray Les Déronnières

The grapes for "Les Déronnières" from Francois and Julien Pinon (first made in 2014)  used to be included in the Silex Noir, but this wonderful vineyard, the Pinon's best parcel on a hill-top directly above their cellar, much deserves to be bottled on its own.  The very thin topsoil is clay with silex over Turonian limestone, and the beautiful exposure gives ripe fruit that is normally vinified as a demi-sec, but in recent vintages the RS level has been below 10 gr/l making it dry, in Vouvray anyway.

The details from Julien:  "From a 1 hectare vineyard facing south on the "premier cote calcaire" with vines averaging 60 years of age. Harvested in the second week of September 2019 in sunny weather, three passes through the vineyard to select only the best grapes, futher selection on a "table de tris" and again before going into the press. Three month fermentation in oak barrels, no SO2 or added yeasts, aged on the lees in barrel, bottled in April 2020, with a light filtration, 5,000 bottles produced. Alcohol 13.5%, residual sugar 7 grams/liter, acidity 4.9 gr/liter, pH 3.10." The 2019 is a sensational Vouvray with superb density and balance from a vintage giving perfect ripeness and a bit more alcohol than normal. The wine shows elegant aromas of lime-flower, dried pear, lemon zest and stones. The palate is very dense and ripe, saline and mineral with round white fruits, citrus and herbal notes with fabulous length. A great Vouvray with fantastic minerality  that will age beautifully - last year's release of 1964 Demi-Sec was simply astouding! Fortunately this beautiful wine can be enjoyed immensely now - serve with shellfish, oysters, cold fish, vegetable terrines, choucroute de la mer, rillettes and rillons...

Pinon 2021 Vouvray Sauvé du Gel

(Arrives 8/22) After the tragic death of his father in January, Julien saw 95% of his 2021 crop destroyed by frost. With the help of Vincent Careme and Jean-Bernard Berthomé, Julien was able to make a tiny quantity of one dry Vouvray, aptly named "Sauvée du Gel." With about 6 grams/liter of RS, this is a beautiful dry Vouvray that can be enjoyed now, but probably best after ten years. Our friend Juliette Pope was lucky enough to taste it - "Flinty, smoky, piercing, lemon-lime, white fruit tone, sapidity for days." Three-bottle max please for fans of this great domaine and great family...

Sansonnière (Mark Angéli) 2018 Vin de France La Lune 1.5 L

Badly hit by the mildew and the frost, the vines produced barely 10hl/ha, giving a lot of concentration to all the wines. Yet for the first time in a couple of vintages, the 2018 Lune is almost dry, and it is a superb expression of the cuvée. Mirabelle and peach pit on the nose, the palate is dense, plummy, with a salty core. The quinine notes gives a lot of length. Enjoy it with spring pea gazpacho, a fluke tartare, bergamot and castelvetrano olive oil or a fourme d’ambert. 3g RS, 44 ppm total of volcanic sulfur. Pascaline Lepeltier.

Bel Air-Marquis d'Aligre 2010 Margaux

The 2010 Bel Air-Marquis d'Aligre is from very old vines and also from approximately 50 year-old vines planted by M. Boyer at 10,000 plants per hectare. There is a long fermentation without extraction, the juice remains in cuve until spring, then spends six months in old barrels followed by two to three years in cement vat. These are wines made in the lighter "claret" style of the 19th century, although the 2010 shows an incredible density of flavor, given the less-extracted style. Upon opening the wine shows subtle aromas of earth, red currant and cherry fruit with licorice and brown spice. The palate is deep and quite expressive with black cherry, strawberry, earth, licorice and mineral flavors, quite Burgundian in texture. The finish is very long with lingering tart cherry, sous-bois and mineral flavors. After two days open (re-corked) the aromas have broadened with  prune, ripe cherry, tobacco, spice and rose and the palate is intense with red and black fruit liqueur, spice box and earth and ending with lingering red fruits and firm acidity. Delicious now with a long decant, this will be an extraordinary mature wine, best perhaps 2035 - 2050. David Lillie

Chateau Massereau 2009 Bordeaux Superieur Cuvee K

The Cuvée K 2009 from Massereau is balanced in a fantastic state of maturity. It is a blend from the estate's organically farmed vines of Cab Franc, Cab Sauv, Merlot, and Petit Verdot. Dark stone fruits, pitted cherries, and dried blueberries form the wine’s aromatic base, while lighter accents of orange peel and clove add a lifted dimension. The palate is rich, with plum, blackberry, black currants, with a smoky hint of loamy minerality. The wine shows great tannic strength, with a beam of mouthwatering acidity. The finish is long, with a tender sweetness of fresh red berries on the tongue that wraps up each sip. This is a must-buy for Bordeaux drinkers looking for exceptional quality at a great price! Pop a bottle this weekend, you’ll see what I mean. David Hatzopoulos

Croix & Courbet 2019 Côtes du Jura Savagnin Ouillé

The Croix & Courbet 2019 Côtes du Jura is a very clear lemon in color, with flashes of silver. The nose is clean and herbal, with a soft floral undertone. Yellow apple and candied lemon with just a touch of the trademark walnut skin and dry grass that Savagnin is known for. As the wine opens, the nose becomes much deeper, with slim, never-ending aromatic density: black pepper, raw and roasted almonds. On the palate the wine is salty, with great tension. A touch of nutty richness, mixed with citrus, chamomile, lemon grass. The finish is long, riding very high acidity and a mild swish. David Hatzopoulos

Petit-Roy (Seiichi Saito) 2019 VDF Altesse Bugey - Montagnieu

From organically grown Altesse on the slopes of Montagnieu in the Alpine region of Bugey. Soils are marl and limestone. This is Petit-Roy's only venture outside of Burgundy. The '19 was aged for 12 months in barrel, and saw a light filtration. To Seiichi, this vintage is "refined and long." The 2019 is more savory on the nose, with a lace of elegant richness presenting a combo of warm herbal tones and attractively fragrant floral notes. Lime zest, mint, oyster shell and pear add to the wine's aromatic complexity. On the second night, a wispy, flinty smoke appears. The palate is spicy, with freshly ground white and black pepper, hints of pine, and sparky limestone dancing above flavors of orchard fruit and healthy, tart lemon. The '19 has more density on the tongue than the '18 and its finish displays just a touch of creaminess, cut with fresh acidity. David Hatzopoulos

Domaine Pierre Richard 2019 Cotes du Jura Trousseau

From 30 year old Trousseau vines planted to soils of clay-limestone with red and gray marl by Domaine Pierre Richard (in conversion with Ecocert). Fruit is hand harvested at the end of Auguest and the beginning of September, from estate vineyards 270 meters above sea level with Southwest exposure. Fermentation is done with native yeasts in stainless steel tanks and maceration on the skins lasts a month. The wine is aged for 5 months in stainless before bottling with zero added sulfur. In the glass it is a wonderfully clear ruby with shades of purple. Those nose is especially savory, with a medley of red berries, fresh red flowers, and a hint of smoky ash. The palate is driven by a clean vein of dark minerality at the core of soft black cherry fruit. Structurally, acid is appropriately high, tannin is light, and drinkability is off the charts. I would definitely not describe this as ‘glou-glou,’ as it is too elegant and warm in flavor, but I would describe it as dangerously easy to consume very, very quickly. Drink up! David Hatzopoulos

Descombes, Georges 2018 Chiroubles Vieilles Vignes

Sandwiched between the appellations of Morgon and Fleurie, Chiroubles is slightly less famous than its two neighbors, and can occasionally be referred to as producing wines of less complexity, with a more immediate and obvious charm. Yet there is no lack of excitement in the vielles vignes (old vines) offerings from Georges Descombes, and the 2018 Chiroubles is no exception, and showing quite beautifully right now, though a decant definitely helps. The nose shows wonderful deep fruit notes of dark cherry, cherry liqueur, blackberry, dark forest fruit, raspberry, raspberry leaves, blackcurrant tea, and a hint of baking spice and nutmeg. The palate is fresh and energetic, with vibrant acidity and is both expressive and showing great intensity of flavor. The fruit of the nose translates well, though slightly more red fruit tinged, and introduces a hint of orange zest and apple peel. There is also a bit of earthiness and minerality, which balances well with the fruit and spice notes. A delicious bottle now, this will only get better in the next 10 years. Oskar Kostecki

Descombes, Georges 2018 Morgon

Georges Descombes is one of the premiere vignerons in Beaujolais. His farming is certified organic and his winemaking is very traditional; using native yeasts, semi-carbonic maceration, and very little sulfur added at bottling. The 2018 Morgon showed beautifully, tasted with Georges in early February, a bit fuller and deeper than the Regnié and Brouilly, showing ripe aromas of raspberry and strawberry  with elegant strawbery liqueur, earth and minerals on the palate with terrific length. It's a gorgeous wine that should be served slightly chilled with just about anything - enjoy over the next three to five years. David Lillie

Descombes, Georges 2018 Morgon Vieilles Vignes

Pretty young to be checking in on the old vines cuvée, but these are unusual times to say the least. Dark ruby, verging in purple robe. Dusty crushed blackberries, violets, and a brambly note on the nose. Nothing roasted or overripe here, despite the black fruit. The palate is mid-weight and has fine sap and vigor, with succulent ripeness and plenty of dry extract to buffer the firm—not stern—tannins. There’s good tension between the bright, ripe, concentrated fruit and the substantial mineral core. The finish is long and layered with good lift and fine persistence. There’s good structure here and while this has plenty of charm now, this ought to dazzle with 5-7 years in the cellar and beyond. And while the prices have crept up, this is a steal given its breed and rivals plenty of very good villages wines from my beloved Côte d’Or in character and complexity. John McIlwain

Descombes, Georges 2018 Regnié Vieilles Vignes

The 2018 Regnié Vieilles Vignes was one of the stars in last winter's tasting showing gorgeous red and black raspberry aromas with earth, citrus and spice, really lovely. The palate is elegant and long with black cherry, prune and red fruit liqueur with earth and smoke, with underlying mineral, graphite flavors. The wine is beautifully balanced and fresh at 13 - 13.5% alcohol, powerful yet refined and delicate,  and will improve with a few years cellaring - but in such a nice place right now. This is an outstanding Beaujolais, simply delicious - serve cool with pork and lamb dishes, coq au vin, charcuterie, over the next ten years. EL

Ducroux 2017 Vin de France Prologue

"Faites des vins peu alcoolisés avec un joli parfum" said Jules Chauvet (Make wines low in alcohol and with lovely aromas) and no one does this better than Christian Ducroux! The 2017 Prologue weighs in at 10.5% alcohol and shows a fairly dark red/black color  with lush aromas of crushed raspberry and blackberry with hints of earth, white pepper and geranium. The palate is bright and supple with black raspberry, citrus, rose, earth and mineral flavors. This lively and very alive wine takes you into the soils of Ducroux's vineyards and is a tonic for the soul. Zero added sulfur, keep cool - highly recommended for lovers of natural wines. Ducroux 2019 Vin de France Patience

(Early May arrival) The 2019 "Patience" is extraordinary. "... elegant and balanced, with brightness and lift. Though the Patience can at times have a purple, Syrah-like nose and dark fruit profile, this was very pure Gamay on granite, with vibrant red fruit, subtle earth, mineral flavors and fine tannins." This needs a few years and should be best after 5 - 6 years of cellaring, drink until 2035?

Ducroux 2020 Vin de France Prologue

Christian Ducroux' 5 hectare  estate has been organic and biodynamic since 1985, and has operated as a nearly self-sufficient farm, producing its own fertilizer and compost, and plowing and harvesting almost entirely without machinery. The vines average over 60 years of age and are replaced by massale selection, giving extremely low yields and low levels of alcohol. Christian's farming is among the most thoughtful and inspired practiced anywhere in the world and his wines express this work in a joyful natural way. "Faites des vins peu alcoolisés avec un joli parfum" said Jules Chauvet (Make wines low in alcohol and with lovely aromas) and no one does this better than Christian - The 2020 Prologue weighs in at 11% alcohol despite the extra ripeness of what is shaping up to be another excellent vintage in Beaujolais, and shows a bright red/purple color with  aromas of crushed strawberry and blackberry with violet, white pepper, plum skin, blood orange and radish greens - really wild and wonderful. The palate is light, bright and refreshing with strawberry compote, blackberry and earth - meaty and mineral with pure bright berry fruits and stony flavors in the thirst-quenching finish. The 2020 Prologue is a lively, very alive and simply beautiful wine that takes you into the soils of Ducroux' vineyards and is a tonic for the soul. Zero added sulfur, keep cool - highly recommended for lovers of natural wines!  David Lillie

Low alcohol (11.5%) and ultra-refreshing... The 2020 shows a pale pink/orange color, the aromas show a hint of spice with creamy raspberry fruit with rose petal and citrus. Finot, Thomas 2015 Coteaux Grésivaudan Etraire de la Dhuy

Étraire de la Dhuy is a rare grape from the Vallé du Grésivaudan with only about 6 hectares currently in production. The 2015 Finot Étraire de la Dhuy is from a parcel of 70 year-old massale selection vines. Tasted in January 2017, the wine impressed us with subtle, earthy black fruits, quite sappy and ripe but with a bright, cool quality. The finish was long and elegant with mineral flavors and firm acidity. (We'll taste the wine in October, and sell a few more bottles, when Matthieu Finot, bother of the winemaker, will present the wines at Chambers Street, date and time TBD.)

Rousset 2019 Crozes-Hermitage

From hillside vineyards in Erome, Gervans and Crozes, mostly granite with some limestone/clay, average age 45 years, aged 30% in foudre, 70% in one to 7 year-old burgundy barrels. This is no "ordinary" Crôzes-Hermitage, but a real wine of terroir from great vineyard sites, all on hillsides. Domaine Rousset is blessed with excellent terroir and the good sense to get that into the bottle with as little interference as possible. The 2019 Crôzes-Hermitage has a beautiful deep purple robe. The nose offers lovely aromas of black currant, dewberry, black tea, and violets—oh, the violets! The palate while concentrated, has fine energy and features an array of fresh, ripe black and blue fruit flavors, with a bit of savory leather and a lovely bead of graphite stoniness within the ripe fruit, carrying on to the long, sapid, just juicy finish. This is lovely stuff and positively sings in concert with a plate of poulet aux olives, but a bit of saucisson or terrine wouldn’t suffer for this; and come to think of it, if you have a wild mushroom pasta recipe tucked away, this pretty Crôzes would offer good company indeed. What a marvelous bottle! John McIlwain

Rousset 2019 Saint-Joseph

The 2020 Rousset Saint-Joseph is from a one-half hectare parcel of 35 to 70 year-old vines in "Les Rivoires" on the lower slope in Tournon, a cool, late-ripening terroir with clay, sand and stones over firm granite. Aged 12 months, 30% foudre, 70% 1 to 5 year-old barrels. This is prime Saint-Joseph terroir (the Gonons have vines in "Rivoires" as well) giving a dense well-structured wine that is enjoyable young, as most of the grapes are de-stemmed, and that will drink well over the next ten+ years.

2019 is an excellent vintage at the Roussets - the Saint-Joseph  shows a dark black/red color with deep aromas of blackberry and blueberry liqueur with plum, earth, oak and smoke, with high-toned citrus notes and good brightness. The palate is quite dense and supple with ripe black fruits and hints of blueberry, dark chocolate, black olive, licorice and roast meats  which continue in the long finish with pronounced mineral flavors and firm acidity with surprising lift and brightness. There must be a newer barrel this year as there is a bit of oak which will blend in soon. The Rousset Saint-Joseph is normally somewhat austere and tightly structured when young, but as in 2018 the 2019 will be quite delicious as a young wine if decanted for a few hours. Despite the more forward aspect, there is plenty of structure here for aging, best perhaps 2025 to 2035.  David Lillie
