Beautiful Burgundies from Les Champs de l'Abbaye, and New Arrivals from Jean-Claude Rateau!

Share

We're very happy to have the beautiful Côte Chalonnaise wines from Les Champs de l'Abbaye back in the store! And we're equally happy to have a small additional allocation from Jean Claude Rateau in Beaune, including more of his lovely Haute-Côtes de Beaune Rouge and Blanc. These two estates emphatically prove that delicious Burgundies do not need to be expensive!!

Isabelle and Alain Hasard

Certified organic since 1999, and practicing biodynamic methods as well, Alain and Isabelle Hasard at Les Champs de l'Abbaye are making superb wines from their parcels in the Côte Chalonnaise, primarily in Aluze, Mercurey and Rully, as well as an exuberant Monthélie "Les Sous Roches."  The Hasards prune for very low yields producing reds with superb intensity of fruit that remain relatively light on the palate and are balanced by bright acidity. The Chalonnaise Blancs and Rully "Les Cailloux" are far from the usual plump and fruity Chardonnays - these are real wines of terroir with subtle fruit, prominent mineral flavors and firm acidity somewhat in the style of the Chablis of De Moor. Anyone who enjoys Burgundy should discover the wines of Les Champs de l'Abbaye which offer sensational value and superb food-friendly enjoyment, both for current drinking and five to ten years of cellaring!

Of special note is their new Côte Chalonnaise "Les Claveaux," made from young vines of Pinot Fin, from three different massale selections, with 10% Chardonnay. The palate is light and refreshing, but quite ripe, velvety and sapid in 2022 - really delicious!                                                ___________________________________

Our last shipment of the 2022's from Jean-Claude Rateau has just arrived, including more of the simply delicious Hautes-Côtes de Beaune Blanc and Rouge, and replenishing our supplies of the Beaune village wines, featuring my personal favorite, the silky and subtle "Clos des Mariages." A special added attraction is a few cases of the superb 2018 Beaune 1er Cru "Les Bressandes" for beautiful current drinking or for another ten to fifteen years in the cellar. We hope that Burgundy lovers will not object to the remarkably low prices for these gorgeous wines!

No new oak in the cellar...

Jean-Claude created his domain in 1979 with a few family parcels, always in biodynamic agriculture, and now cultivates 10 hectares in the Hautes-Côtes de Beaune, Beaune and Gevrey-Chambertin. Only a light and superficial plowing is done in summer, respecting wild plants and keeping hedges and fruit trees along the vines. Minimal fertilizers are used, always organic composts, as well as biodynamic preparations. Replanting is by massale selection, seeking a great diversity in the parcels, often with co-planted varieties, such as Chardonnay, Pinot Gris and Pinot Blanc in La Grande Chatelaine. Fermentations are with wild yeasts, of course, with the goal of making wines with no additives, with minimal added SO2, and there is no new oak in the cellar. (Sounds a bit like Baudry and Gonon?)

Wines are in stock or arriving this week, please allow until Mar 4th for pick-up/shipping.

Champs de l'Abbaye 2022 Cote Chalonnaise Blanc "Les Amourettes"

The Champs de l'Abbaye "Les Amourettes" is a lovely Chardonnay from limestone terroir in Aluze, next to Mercurey. Notes of ripe yellow apple and pear waft from the glass with juicy tropical fruit and lemon confit on the round palate. Medium to full bodied despite it's lithe 12.5% abv, it would lend itself to fuller white meat, fish dishes and cream sauces such as blanquette de veau, monkfish a l'oseille and roasted pork belly. Champs de l'Abbaye 2022 Rully Les Cailloux

The Hasard's have a small parcel of 40 year-old vines in Rully on clay and limestone soils. The 2022 is showing stunning elegance in its youth, with seductive aromas of dried apricots, flint, wild honeysuckle and integrated hints of new oak. The palate is charged with flavors of pear, citrus, and quince with an intense mineral-laden acidirty, balancing the lovely ripeness of the 2022 vintage. The finish is long and remarkably stony. Drink now with shell fish, comté cheese, or roast chicken, or hold for 5-10 years for a mature experience.

Champs de l'Abbaye 2022 Cote Chalonnaise "Gardes RéMi"

The 2022 "Les Gardes Rémi" is a new wine for Les Champs de l'Abbaye, coming from a parcel of 70 year-old Pinot Noir vines in the Côte Chalonnaise.  "Beautiful freshness and aromatic expression" says winemaker Alain Hasard. It's definitely bursting with punchy red fruit and some oak spice on the nose, with a broad palate and enough weight to hold up to a variety of dishes while retaining ample acidity and refined tannins. It comes even more into focus after an hour or so open, and should continue to evolve nicely over the next five years.

Champs de l'Abbaye 2022 Cote Chalonnaise Les Claveaux

The 2022 Côtes Chalonnaise "les Claveaux" is a lovely new cuvée from Alain and Isabelle Hasard at Les Champs de l'Abbaye. Made from young vines of Pinot Fin, from three diffeent massale selections, with 10% Chardonnay. The wine is delicate and delicious and should be served a bit cool. The aromas are vivid and very pretty - tart black cherry, black raspberry, citrus, coffee and violet. The palate is light and refreshing, but quite ripe, velvety and sapid in 2022 with cherry and berry fruits and hints of citrus, spice and earth. Serve with chicken and white meats and save some for grilled foods next summer. Just delicious... "Concentrated, with delicate floral nuances, a bit more structure than in previous years. Lots of immediate charm and great potential" says Alain Hasard.

Champs de l'Abbaye 2022 Mercurey Les Marcoeurs

From .75 hectares in the lieu-dit "Les Marceours" adjacent to Clos Myglands on the eastern edge of the village. The vines range from 20-45 years old and are grown in mixed limestone debris and ferruginous soils. Stylish Mercurey, showing the ripenes of the 2022 vintage, with an array of wild strawberry, raspberry, cherry liqueur, earth and mineral aromas upon the nose, quite dense but elegant and bright. Medium-bodied, with ripe concentrated, sappy red fruits and dark earth tones and hints of spice in the mouth; there is oak present, but it integrates nicely into the  very long, succulent, sappy and stony finish, with great freshness and length. Lovely now, should improve over the next five to eight years. This is an excellent value in Red Burgundy and a loely wine!

Champs de l'Abbaye 2021 Crémant de Bourgogne Brut Nature

The scintillating Champs de l'Abbaye Cremant de Bourgogne is 2/3 Pinot Noir and 1/3 Chardonnay, but nature - zero dosage, from organic grapes grown in the Côte Chalonnaise near Mercurey. This is an excellent Champagne-alternative and a great value. Aromas of freshly baked brioche, zesty citrus, and white flowers lift from the glass. The palate is very dry and densely mineral  with flavors of ripe pear, hints of baking spice, and stony acidity. A delicious, food-friendly bottle for any occasion. A Crémant for an aperitif, or with oysters from Brittany...

Rateau 2022 Hautes-Côtes de Beaune Blanc Chardonnay

Jean-Claude Rateau makes lovely Biodynamic wines in the Hautes-Côtes-de-Beaune in his east-facing vineyard of clay/limestone and marne soils.  Quite racy and bright even in the ripe 2022 vintage, the wine shows lovely aromas of lemon, almond, stone, spiced pear and apple. The palate is rounder and more ripe than usual, but perfectly balanced with pear, citrus and stone flavors and terrific length. The antithesis of fat, oaky Chardonnays, this food friendly wine will accompany everything from oysters and grilled seafood to roast chicken and mild cheeses. Delicious now or cellar for 5 to 8 years. This is a real Chardonnay of terroir and a great value!  David Lillie

Rateau 2022 Hautes-Côtes de Beaune "En Bignon" Rouge

Jean-Claude Rateau's  new Hautes-Côtes de Beaune cuvée "En Bignon" is a bit more fine and delicate than the regular cuvée, coming from a beautiful 1 hectare single vineyard. The wine shows lovely aromas of strawberry, raspberry and violet and a light, silky palate. Serve cool and enjoy!

Rateau 2022 Cote de Beaune La Grande Chatelaine

About a kilometer or two northwest of the Beaune 1er Crus, La Grande Chatelaine is a cooler site with soils comprised of clay over limestone. The 2022 Clos de la Grande Chatelain is 90% Chardonnay, 10% Pinot Blanc and Pinot Beurot. This is a great vintage for the Grande Chatelaine - it's classy and elegant wine with fresh cool-toned aromatics of white flowers,  nectarine, rainwater,  and pear skin. The medium-bodied palate is a little warmer toned offering flavors of nectarine, white peach, and crushed herb with a fairly savory finish. Beautiful wine, and a very elegant pairing with any elegant seafood or white meat preparation.

Rateau 2022 Beaune Clos des Mariages Blanc

Located toward the bottom of the slope beneath Beaune Grèves and adjacent to Les Cents Vignes, Clos des Mariages is a mix of young and very old vines planted in clay and limestone soils. The lovely 2022 Blanc shows high-toned aromas of lime-flower, melon, pear, wet stone and honeysuckle. The palate is light and silky with pear, apple and citrus flavors with chalky minerals and herbal notes in the refreshing finish. Superb in 2022, the wine combines lush, lovely fruit with bright acidity and a real mineral presence. Delicious now, but in 5 - 10 years it will be quite special.  David Lillie

Rateau 2022 Beaune Clos des Mariages

Located toward the bottom of the slope beneath Beaune Grèves and adjacent to Les Cents Vignes, Clos des Mariages is a mix of young and very old vines planted in clay and brown limestone soils. "This fertile soil gives wines that are open and joyous, with delicate spice notes, giving great pleasure in their youth and capable of long-term aging." (J-C Rateau) Indeed the 2022 Clos des Mariages seems a bit fuller than the 2020 and 2021 but showing lovely brightness and balance, really a superb wine with gorgeous aromas, showing a bright mélange of black cherry, strawberry, red currant and raspberry with hints of spice, citrus, licorice and violet. The palate is very elegant showing dense, chalky fruit, sappy and ripe but with firm acidity and mineral flavors that continue in the very long, juicy finish. This is absolutely delicious now and should drink well continuously over the next ten to fifteen years. Beautiful wine! David Lillie

Rateau 2022 Beaune "Les Beaux et Bons"

Jean-Claude says this wine, sourced from lieux-dits Beaux Fougets (clay soils) and Bons Feuvres (iron-rich soils) on the Pommard side of Beaune, always shows aromas of "cerises noires" (black cherries).  The 2022 has a bright red/garnet robe. The nose is super-pretty with pure, very floral aromas with notes of violet, black cherry and ripe black raspberry. The palate is beautifully textured, chalky and sapid, with red and black fruits (there's that black cherry!) but with lovely lightness and balance with savory herbal notes, and a brooding earthiness beneath the ripe, exuberant fruit. This showed a bit lighter than the "Mariages" and "Prevoles" but in a delightful and elegant way  - give this a bit of aeration and it will be a very beautiful bottle, served a bit cool, with coq au vin or perhaps braised duck legs. Lovely wine!

Rateau 2022 Beaune 1er Cru Les Reversées

From vines grown in the calcareous clay soils of "Les Reversées" premier cru, toward the bottom of the hill in the center of the slope next to "Les Teurons," and  below "Clos de la Mousse," exposed east and slightly north (hence "reversées" - wrong side of the hill.) Mostly young vines, massale selection from the Clos des Epenaux. The 2022 shows generous black cherry, boysenberry, notes of cherry pit and anise on the nose. Ripe mid-weight palate, lighter than "Bressandes," with ripe black fruits, hints of iodine and iron and other soil beneath supple structure. Succulent acidity and savory mineral notes offset the ripeness and lend energy and drive on a balanced and mineral palate-coating finish.. The purity of fruit and earth notes are finely balanced and this is an excellent Burgundy for the mid-term.

Rateau 2020 Beaune 1er Cru Les Bressandes

Jean-Claude Rateau has a large parcel in the 1er Cru Les Bressandes on a steep slope facing east with pebbly clay/limestone soils, conducted in biodynamic farming since 1979. The soil is warm and well-drained giving ripe, structured wines. There is a 21-day cuvaison with manual cap-punching followed by 18 months in old barrels. The 2020 is a superb wine that will age beautifully. The aromas are deep and complex with black fruits, earth, violets and spice. The palate is ripe and intense, elegant and beautifully balanced with red and black fruits, earth and saline mineral flavors. "Precise" is the word that came to mind, a great expression of this terroir, showing a bit more like a Grèves or Teurons in this vintage. Certainly interesting to taste now but best after five years of cellaring, and for many years after that. A great Burgundy for the cellar at a reasonable price!  David Lillie

Rateau 2018 Beaune 1er Cru Les Bressandes

Jean-Claude Rateau has a large parcel in the 1er Cru Les Bressandes on a steep slope facing east with pebbly clay/limestone soils, conducted in biodynamic farming since 1979. The soil is warm and well-drained giving ripe, structured wines. There is a 21-day cuvaison with manual cap-punching followed by 18 months in old barrels. Tasted in January of 2020 in the cellar, the 2018 Bressandes showed a deep black/red color and intense aromas of blackberry  and ripe black cherry, dense and pure. The palate was elegant and deep with black fruits, bitter chocolate, earth and mineral notes, very, very long and with great finishing acidity. Really a vibrant and beautiful Bressandes which should be fun to drink in it's youthful exuberance, or hold and enjoy until 2040. David Lillie

Rateau 2022 Gevrey-Chambertin

The Gevrey-Chambertin by Jean-Claude Rateau is from two small parcels in "Aux Etelois" (below Grand Cru Griottes)  and "les Epointures" (below 1er Cru Clos Prieur) on the more fine and aromatic side of Gevrey, south of the village. Organic and biodynamic farming, minimal extraction and minmal SO2. (Our samples didn't arrive in time for today's offer, but our impressions last January were " SUPER!! Deep, dense, floral, unique...")

Rateau 2020 Beaune 1er Cru Les Coucherias

Beaune 1er Cru "Les Coucherias" is  a steep parcel high on the slope, on the site of an old quarry and much of the sub-soil is limestone tailings, permitting root penetration and drainage, with a topsoil of mixed clay and limestone "marnes blanches." In biodynamic agriculture since 1979, the vineyard is a south-facing semi-circle—a very warm spot giving a full, ripe wine. (tasted from a 12 year-old barrel) Light gold/brass color. Lovely aromas of pear, quince, lime-flower and ripe citrus. The palate is  elegant and supple, with white fruits, almond, citrus and caramel framed in firm acidity and mineral flavors, showing good ripeness but finishing with firm stony acidity. Lovely wine. Delicious now, this should age gracefully till 2035 and beyond.
