Share

It's no secret that we think Domaine Baudry makes some of the finest wines in the Loire Valley, and at prices well below those of the supposed "superstars." So we're particualrly happy to have three more cases of the profound "2020 La Croix Boissée," arriving next week. This is a "wine for the ages" so if you missed it, now's your chance! Also arriving is the 2021 "Le Clos Guillot" - a lovely expresssion of this great vineyard in a cool-vintage style for delightful drinking over the next ten years. And for those who can wait we have a bit more of the superb and ageworthy 2020!

Last of Stock Alert!

Our current stock is the very last of the 2021 Cuvée Domaine - this lovely and old-fashioned Chinon is primarily from the "les Molieres" vineyard in the commune of Saint Louans. We have to go back to 2014 for a similar wine to the 2021, at 12% alcohol, with a lovely bright color and beautifully floral red berry fruits. For something completely different we have the last few cases af the 2022 Les Granges which shows a beautiful bright red/black color with bright rim with vibrant, lush aromas of cassis, red currant and raspberry - perhaps prettier than the darker fruits in the 2018 - 2020 vintages?

2022 Chinon Blanc "Domaine"

Matthieu and Bernard Baudry

Once again in 2022, all of the estate's white grapes, icluding those from the top of La Croix Boissée, were blended together in the Chinon Blanc "Domaine." "It has a warm vintage expression on the nose, with peach, orange, jasmine and crushed chalk, with just a hint of tarragon. Supple and softly structured on the palate, with a chalky backdrop, this is very dry, with a touch of toasted almonds. A lovely expression..." This very complex and ripe dry Chenin will drink beautifully over the next five to eight years - and it's a great value!

We're honored to offer the wines of this superb domain. All aspects of winemaking at Domaine Baudry are performed with the utmost intelligence and care: superb organic farming with their own composts, careful manual harvests, vinifications perfectly suited to each terroir with zero or minimal added SO2 - only a tiny adddition as needed before bottling -  and aging in carefully chosen cement or barrels, with no new oak in the cellar (And Henriette Baudry makes a fantastic crapaudine salad!)

Cyril and Fabien Boisard

Across the river, in Saint Nicolas de Bourgueil, we find the beautiful wines of Fabien and Cyril Boisard at the Domaine du Mortier They practice organic and biodynamic farming with a great diversity of plants and trees among the vines and their vinifications are without additives until a small addition of SO2 if needed. Their first release in 2022 is the gorgeous and gouleyant "Les Sables," which shows a deep red/purple color and beautiful aromas of crushed raspberry and strawberry confit, violet and earth, really lovely. The palate is soft and sapid with creamy berry fruits that deepen nicely in the long finish with firm acidity and black fruits. It's a beautiful Cabernet Franc to serve quite cool over the next two years.

2020 "La Croix Boissée" and 2021 "Le Clos Guillot" arrive 2/27, all other wines are in stock.

Baudry 2020 Chinon Le Clos Guillot

Le Clos Guillot is a beautiful south-east facing vineyard, just east of the town of Chinon, above the Clos de l'Olive and adjacent to Le Chêne Vert. The upper slope of the parcel is clay over limestone (the lower part has sand and gravel over the rock, which permitted a tiny separate production from franc de pied vines, now mostly deceased) and the vines are young, planted from 1993 to 2000. Fermentation in wooden cuves, 12 months of aging in three to ten year-old barriques, 9 additional months in unlined cement vats. We have been buying this wine since it's first production in 2000 – it's one of the most elegant and Burgundian of Chinons. It's become increasingly difficult to write superlatives about this wine, as each vintage since 2014 has been superb in it's own way.  And now 2020, a vintage the Baudrys describe as having old fashioned aromas and freshness typical of Chinon in years past, with firm acidity permitting long-term aging. The wine shows subtle, pretty aromas of raspberry,  strawberry, earth, violet and citrus with hints of meat and bitter chocolate, bright and high-toned. The palate is medium-bodied and earthy with a chalky texture and firm acidity. The berry fruits have nice density, light but persistent, merging with mineral flavors in the long and very food friendly finish. This is a beautiful wine for those who appreciate subtlety and earthiness in their Chinons, reminding me of 2012 and 2014. Serve now with monkfish or halibut, roast chicken and white meats. This will be a lovely, light-bodied mature wine in 10 to 20 years.  David Lillie

Baudry 2021 Chinon Le Clos Guillot

Le Clos Guillot is a beautiful south-east facing vineyard, just east of the town of Chinon, above the Clos de l'Olive and adjacent to Le Chêne Vert. The upper slope of the parcel is clay over limestone (the lower part has sand and gravel over the rock, which permitted a tiny separate production from franc de pied vines, now mostly deceased) and the vines are young, planted from 1993 to 2000. Fermentation in wooden cuves, 12 months of aging in two to five year-old barriques, 9 additional months in unlined cement vats. The Baudrys describe 2021 as a "late harvest vintage in the context of recent very warm years; the harvest ended on October 9 under excellent conditions. The wines are supple and fruit-forward with lovely colors. Though it may not compare to earlier vintages 2021 is a very well-balanced Loire-style vintage. The wines are generous and may probably be enjoyed before the more solar recent years." The 2021 shows a lighter, bright red/black color and aromas of traditional Chinon, fresh raspberry, red currant and cherry with earth and herbal notes, quite pretty. The palate shows bright, sappy red fruits with earthy acidity lifting the flavors and coating the palate with citrusy red fruits, saline minerals and wet stone. This lacks the density and dark fruit of the previous six vintages, but lovers of cool climate Chinon will enjoy this wine immensely.

Baudry 2022 Chinon Blanc "Domaine"

The Baudry Blanc "Domaine" is from young vines in several parcels on the clay/limestone slopes in and around Cravant, and from clay with silex on the plateau above La Croix Boissee.  The grapes are hand-harvested of course and ferment slowly with wild yeasts in 500 liter oak barrels and concrete "egg" until dry, normally less than 2 g/l RS. The wine is aged on its fine lees in used 500-liter demi-muids until the June after the vintage and is very lightly filtered at bottling. Sulfur usage is minimal. Quantity is limited. (There is again no La Croix Boissee in this vintage so all grapes are in the Domaine cuvee.) "It has a warm vintage expression on the nose, with peach, orange, jasmine and crushed chalk, with just a hint of tarragon. Supple and softly structured on the palate, with a chalky backdrop, this is very dry, with a touch of toasted almonds. A lovely expression..." (Winedoctor) This is a relatively low-acid vintage, so this delicious wine should be enjoyed within 5 to 8 years...

Mortier 2022 Saint Nicolas de Bourgueil Les Sables

A lovely Saint Nicolas de Bourgueil from Domaine du Mortier, an estate doing fabulous organic/biodynamic vineyard work and natural low or no-sulfur vinifications. "Les Sables" is grown on sandty gravel soils near the Loire that produce a wine that is generally supple, light and very fruity, with aromas of small red fruits and silky, round tannins. The 2022 is particularly ripe and "gouleyant" showing a deep red/purple color and beautiful aromas of crushed raspberry and strawberry confit, violet and earth, really lovely. The palate is soft and sapid with creamy berry fruits that deepen nicely in the long finish with firm acidity and black fruits. It's a beautiful Cabernet Franc to serve quite cool over the next two years, Delicious wine!  David Lillie

Baudry 2020 Chinon La Croix Boissée

La Croix Boissee is a superb vineyard on thin sandy clay soils over limestone (Middle Turonian calcaire micacé) high on a south-facing slope above Cravant. 20 to 50 year-old vines.  20-day fermentation in tronconic wooden vats, 24 months of aging in 1 to 4 year-old Burgundy barriques, 9 months in cement. Zero SO2 added until a small dosage at assembly, 10 to 20 mg/L, bottled unfiltered.  This is one of the greatest reds of the Loire Valley - at it's best after ten to thirty years of aging, the wine is also quite delicious, though with firm chalky tannins, when young. Unlike other famous wines of the Loire (and elsewhere) there is very gentle extraction and aging is in carefully selected used barrels and concrete, bringing great intensity of flavor but with an intriguing lightness allowing full expression of the limestone/clay soils. "The aromatics convey a sense of ripe purity, with blackcurrant, black cherry and even a touch of black olives, along with a minerally-chalky edge, and even after bottling it retains this divine complexity, with evolving scents of tar, peony, currant and toast. These aromas translate directly onto the palate, combining these same black fruits with a saline energy. It feels taut, textural yet sinewy and linear, before a long and charged finish. It has a silky sense of cohesion, but it is that long grip of tannins and fabulous complexity that tells you this is one for the ages" Wine Doctor

Baudry 2021 Chinon Cuvée Domaine

The Baudry Chinon "Domaine" is always one of our favorite reds from the Loire Valley and it's a sensational value as well.   All Cabernet Franc of course, a blend of 75% from a parcel in St. Louans, where the thin clay over limestone soils give earthy well-structured wines, with 25% from gravel soils near Cravant, giving supple fruit and freshness. Organic farming, wild-yeast fermentation, aging in 5 to 10 year-old wooden vats and cement with almost no added SO2. We have to go back to 2014 for a similar wine to the 2021, at 12% alcohol, with a lovely bright color and beautifully floral red berry fruits. After a day open, complex earth, mineral, herbal and vegetal notes emerge. The palate is fresh and relatively light but with good density of red and black fruits with firm acidity and chalky mineral notes, showing the classic limestone terroir in Saint-Louans. Delightful, and very versatile at the table, serve a bit cool with just about anything. David Lillie

Baudry 2022 Chinon Les Granges

From 35 to 40 year-old vines on gravel and sandy soils with a bit of clay near the Vienne river in organic agriculture. Hand harvested, fermented with wild yeasts, ages for 8 to 10 months in cement vats, minimal addition of SO2 only prior to bottling. This "basic" cuvée from Bernard and Matthieu Baudry has gotten more and more "serious" as the vines age, giving a wine that is  delightful to drink young, but that shows surprising complexity and mineral character as well. In the 2022 vintage,  the wine is a sheer delight, an excellent vintage for this lovely wine.  It showed a beautiful bright red/black color with bright rim with vibrant, lush aromas of cassis, red currant and raspberry - perhaps prettier than the darker fruits in the 2018 - 2020 vintages? The palate is dense with deep, vibrant blackberry and raspberry fruit, with earth and minerals, bright and balanced given the roundness and ripeness of the vintage. This is a delicious Chinon to drink a bit cool over the next five to eight years. Quantities get smaller for this wine every year, so don't delay in trying this very special Super Delicious Cabernet Franc!
