Domaine de L'Enclos

We were pleasantly surprised to find three entire cases of this beautiful wine, just released by the importer. Great Chablis at a reasonable price is hard to come by!

The L'Enclos 1er Cru "Fourchaume" is from three neighboring plots facing west, planted in the 60s, 80s and 90s in the heart of the historic Fourchaume hillside in the commune of La Chapelle-Vaupelteigne. The wine is elegant, ample and persistent. We tasted the 2021 Fourchaume in January of '23 and it was singing. Perhaps thanks to the freshness of the vintage, it was open and ready, with classic stone fruits and the faintest hint of fresh mint. The winemakers indicate that it can be aged for a few years, but this 2021 might be the exception as it's very charming already. But a wine that good would only be better with 5 to 10 years, if you have the space to age a few...

Damian and Romain Bouchard

Romain and Damian Bouchard made wine for years at their family estate, Domaine Pascal Bouchard, then sold the family name and winery midway through the previous decade and retained just shy of thirty hectares of prime vineyard land to create Domaine de L'Enclos. They established a new winery in an old château in the middle of town and promptly set about getting organic certification for the estate.

"Domaine de l'Enclos is 29 hectares of organically farmed vines (Ecocert certification) on the 4 levels of the Chablis designation and notably on some of the most beautiful terroirs of the vineyards.

Most of our work is done in the vineyards. We are 19 people all year round (the triple during the harvest) to take the greatest care of our vineyard to extract the best from it : respectful Poussard pruning, organic fertilizers, disbudding, careful trellising, leaf removal, manual harvesting on all our vintages. We attach great importance to the life of our soils which we maintain by shallow plowing and plantings in the rows. To preventively protect our vines from diseases, we only use products of natural origin, copper, sulfur and plant preparations. The domaine is fully certified in organic agriculture. We vinify in our new gravity-fed cellar. The grapes are harvested at full maturity (no chaptalization), sorted on a vibrating table, pneumatically pressed and the juice flows by gravity into stainless steel tanks installed in an underground cellar where the temperatures are controlled. The vinification is done without any input, no sulfur, with indigenous yeasts. The maturation of our wines in tanks and barrels can last up to 18 months on the lees. The wines are neither fined nor cold treated. Only a light filtration and a moderate addition of sulphur (SO2) is done before bottling.

In summary: living soils, healthy and ripe grapes, simple and natural practices, few interventions, monitoring and patience.

Jean-Marc Brocard

Julien Brocard

This large estate began conversion to organic and biodynamic farming in 1997. While some parcels are now under Julien's name, the Sainte Claire vineyard remains in the JM Brocard estate. The vines for this cuvée are approximately 70 years old, planted in Kimmeridgian limestone soils. A significant step-up in quality from the "regular" cuvée, the Biodynamic "Vieilles Vignes de Sainte Claire" is quite racy and fine for this very warm and sunny vintage. Winemaker Julien Brocard says "We had a long period of dryness, around two months, but this did not affect the vines. But it did reduce the yield. I think this is because of the work we do in the vineyard, organic viticulture keeping the vines in good shape. We commenced harvest around September 1 and picked over 15 days. We only use natural yeasts for fermentation. It was warm during harvest, so it was important to cool the fruit at reception. We need more and more each year, even if you pick in the morning.”  (Vinous 9/23)

Jean-Claude Rateau, Beaune

Jean-Claude in the Hautes-Cotes

As prices for white Burgundies from the Côte d'Or continue to rise, exponentially it seems, we're happy to offer the last 4 cases of the 2022 Côte de Beaune "Clos de la La Grande Chatelaine" and Beaune "Clos des Mariages" from Jean-Claude Rateau - at very reasonable prices! These are just beautiful wines, with perfect ripeness, balance and bright acidity! One of the pioneers of Biodynamic viticulture, Jean-Claude makes pure, subtle and focused wines of terroir that are pure pleasure and these early bottlings from 2022 are silky, elegant and really delicious - drink them now and over the next five to ten years.

Wines are in stock, more inventory arrives 2/22. All wines discount 10% on a case or mixed case.

Brocard, Jean-Marc 2022 Chablis Vieilles Vignes Sainte-Claire

This large estate began conversion to organic and biodynamic farming in 1997. While some parcels are now under Julien's name, the Sainte-Claire vineyard remains in the JM Brocard estate - the 2022 is quite racy and fine for a 2022. Harvest was done early in the morning, fermentation was with native yeasts. "The palate has a fine lick of salinity on the entry. With fine depth, this linear and taut Chablis will appeal to those seeking a more classic style in this warmer vintage. Excellent." Neal Martin Vinous

Rateau 2022 Cote de Beaune La Grande Chatelaine

About a kilometer or two northwest of the Beaune 1er Crus, La Grande Chatelaine is a cooler site with soils comprised of clay over limestone. The 2022 Clos de la Grande Chatelain is 90% Chardonnay, 10% Pinot Blanc and Pinot Beurot. This is a great vintage for the Grande Chatelaine - it's classy and elegant wine with fresh cool-toned aromatics of white flowers,  nectarine, rainwater,  and pear skin. The medium-bodied palate is a little warmer toned offering flavors of nectarine, white peach, and crushed herb with a fairly savory finish. Beautiful wine, and a very elegant pairing with any elegant seafood or white meat preparation.

Rateau 2022 Beaune Clos des Mariages Blanc

Located toward the bottom of the slope beneath Beaune Grèves and adjacent to Les Cents Vignes, Clos des Mariages is a mix of young and very old vines planted in clay and limestone soils. The lovely 2022 Blanc shows high-toned aromas of lime-flower, melon, pear, wet stone and honeysuckle. The palate is light and silky with pear, apple and citrus flavors with chalky minerals and herbal notes in the refreshing finish. Superb in 2022, the wine combines lush, lovely fruit with bright acidity and a real mineral presence. Delicious now, but in 5 - 10 years it will be quite special.  David Lillie
