The Texier aging cellar in Charnay

New Wines from Éric and Laurence Texier, and Recent Arrivals from the Southern Rhone

Share

We're very happy to offer new arrivals from our friends Éric and Laurence Texier, who will be in town in April for tastings with their importer and for a dinner at Chambers (the restaurant) on April 12th.

We've been enjoying the wines of Eric and Laurence for more than 20 years - they bring a unique sensibility to wine production, based on the most natural farming and no-nonsense vinification techniques, accompanied by great intelligence and humor. The farming is certified organic, but they eschew the permitted use of copper or sulfur. Biodynamic tisanes are implemented but only the plant-based, not the animal- based, ones. Cover crops, for which they grow their own seeds, are a crucial component, with no-till farming. Cellar practices too are minimalist and meticulous, centering on infusion rather than extraction: whole-cluster, native-yeast fermentations; very short macerations; no punchdowns or pumpovers (only submerged caps); extended lees contact; no racking or stirring; very little, sometimes zero, sulfur; aging only in concrete and old oak; no fining or filtering (except on entry-level wines. Purity and precision are prioritized over power.

"Calico," "Adele" and  Brézème Roussanne - Three wonderfully unique and delicious wines! 2022 Calico comes from a one hectare parcel in Charnay co-planted with Muscat d’Alexandrie, Muscat Petit Grain, Muscat Ottonnel, Chasselas Blanc, Chasselas Gris and Pinot Gris. The 2022 offers a lovely combination of floral and stone fruit notes, suggesting the aromatic varieties with lychee and white flowers, but also subtle tangerine and citrus fruits - it's a jovial and thirst-quenching wine with life-affirming energy! 2022 Adele is Clairette with a splash of Marsanne from granite terroir in St Julien en St Alban - it's a complex, vibrant and  refreshing wine, and a great value as well! 2021  Brézème CDR Blanc Roussanne Selection massale from the very old Roussanne vines of Domaine Pergaud, planted in 2003. Wonderfully complex and delicate aromas, beautiful purity of yellow fruits, citrus, almond and saline minerals, sappy and silky.

At our last tasting with the Texiers, the reds showed beautifully of course - our new favorite being the 2020 Le Clau - but the real revelations were older bottles of the  Brézème Roussette Vieilles Vignes and Châteauneuf-du-Pape Blanc. At 10 to 20 years of age these wines were in perfect condition and were oustanding food pairings. On offer today is the superb 2019 CDP Blanc and the last vintage of the unique 2018 Brézème Vieille Roussette.

Beware - Crazy Cat!

2020 Vin de France "Chat Fou" -  50% Grenache/30% Cinsault/20% Clairette. Mainly from Texier’s warmer, granitic St Julien vineyard. "It wasn’t easy to make a wine that was easy drinking and not too rich in 2022. We decided to add more Cinsault and harvest the Clairette a little earlier. We let the white grapes macerate a bit on their own a few days before adding them to the Cinsaults. The Grenaches were vinified later and apart; in the end we only kept the free-run juice as the skins were thick and tannic.

2020 Vin de France "Le Clau" Vieille Serine  "From a handful of rows in our 0.5 ha of a very particular strain of Serine. Planted in the 1930’s in the Masson parcel of Saint-Julien en-Saint-Alban in the lieu-dit Le Clau. Extraordinary wine!

Vines in St Julien en St Alban

Syrah from St. Julien en St. Alban! About twenty kilometers south of the vineyards of Cornas and Saint-Peray, a rare and unique terroir is nestled at the foot of a mountain on the northern bank of the Ouvèze. The Ouvèze marks the radical geological separation between the southern Ardèche with its limestone soils and the granitic foothills typical of the northern Rhône. At this point, a deep fault formed, revealing 300 million years of subsoil history. The result is an exceptional geo-diversity: on a granitic flank, slopes of leptynite (fine-grained gneiss) and schists on a substratum of calcareous marls. From these soils, we produce 100% Syrah wines." Today we're offering the 2020 Cotes du Rhone, From Texier's younger (20-40-year-old) vines, planted on a south-facing slope on granite soils, and the just released 2019 CDR Vieille Serine from 70+ year-old vines of an old, pre-clonal variety known as "Serine", planted on a south-facing slope on granite soils in the warm St-Julien-en-St-Alban.

Châteauneuf-du-Pape! We love Eric's 2020 CDP Rouge: "2020 Châteauneuf rouge : reminds me of 2000. In one word : balance. Between fruit and structure, acidity and roundness, aromatic expression and aging potential. This wine pleases me a lot. Unusual lately... Harvested late September under perfect conditions. Whole cluster of course, 18 months in demi muids. A tiny bit of grenache blanc in it, since we forgot to harvest 2 rows when we did the whites! 1956 bottles and 24 magnums." Eric Texier

Texier (Vignenvie) 2022 Vin de France Calico

(Arrives Wed 2/21) Texier "Vignenvie" Calico comes from a one hectare parcel in Charnay co-planted with Muscat d’Alexandrie, Muscat Petit Grain, Muscat Ottonnel, Chasselas Blanc, Chasselas Gris and Pinot Gris. The Vignenvie project is quite unique: many inhabitants of the small village of Charnay work this land together as a community. Eric Texier then vinifies the wines and redistributes it to the workers. The work is heavily inspired by the agricultural philosophy of Masanobu Fukuoka. The 2022 offers a lovely combination of floral and stone fruit notes, suggesting the aromatic varieties with lychee and white flowers, but also subtle tangerine and citrus fruits. On the palate, the acidity is lively but balanced and not too sharp, with white apricot and fresh stones. The finish brings everything together and adds fresh-cut herbs and orchard fruit notes. A jovial and thirst-quenching wine with life-affirming energy! Seems like Eric hasn't given up on making no sulfur wines, at least he's really good at it! 30 minutes open and it's just getting better....

Texier 2018 CDR Brézème Pergaud Vieille Roussette

(Arrives 2/21) "Roussette" can mean Roussanne in the Northern Rhône, Altesse if you're in Bugey or even Marsanne, if you're in St. Peray. In Brézème, it's Roussanne, and Eric made, for the last time, this special cuvée from the oldest vines of Monsieur Pouchoulin, in a parcel of clay and limestone with large stones (galets roulés),  Fabulously complex aromas, very ripe, slight oxidation but freshness as well, with citrus, yellow fruits, vanilla, almond. The palate is round, ripe and very elegant. "2018 is the penutlimate vintage of Roussettes in Brézème. We ripped them out in the fall of 2019; the production had become too miniscule. It’s a vintage with a lot of matter, a discrete touch of oxidation that makes the wine destined for exciting, unorthodox food pairings. No added SO2 – 840 bottles and 18 magnums." - Eric Texier

Texier 2019 Châteauneuf-du-Pape Blanc Vieilles Vignes (2/21)

(Arrives 2/21) 2019 Chateauneuf-du-Pape VV - From old vines of Bourboulenc and Clairette on galets roulés in "Bois Sénéchaux," facing north. Flashing a medium gold hue, the nose offers fabulously complex aromas of quince, cantaloupe, orange marmalade and orange blossom, with almond, citrus, dried flowers and chamomille, lifted by a slightly oxidative character. The palate is full bodied with concentration from the old vines, showing ripe pear and yellow fruits with meyer lemon, almond and intense saline minerals, finishing with firm acidity and fabulous length. A true winter weight Rhone white meant for heartier dishes and colder climes. GH/DL   "2019 Chateauneuf blanc : very hot and ripe year, similar to 2017. Even the bourboulenc was very ripe. We did some oxydation on the must before fermentation to avoid too much oxydative notes in the finish wine. In the end like for any super ripe vintage, we do have a touch of oxydation (should please the Jura kids...), but the wine has a great potential for imaginative pairings with food. Really amazing with marinated poultry (acidic marinade - lime, lemon... based). For drinking now, unlike 2018 or 2020 that will need years, imo.." Eric Texier

Texier 2022 Vin de France Chat Fou

(Arrives 2/21) The  Texier 2022  "Chat Fou" is normally 50% Grenache/30% Cinsault/20% Clairette. Mainly from Texier’s warmer, granitic St Julien vineyard. "It wasn’t easy to make a wine that was easy drinking and not too rich in 2022. We decided to add more Cinsault and harvest the Clairette a little earlier. The Grenaches were vinified later and apart; in the end we only kept the free-run juice as the skins were thick and tannic."  The 2022 Chat Fou is refreshing, "digeste" and thirst-quenching, showing lovely aromas of tart cherry and raspberry with hints of licorice, violet and citrus. The palate is supple and refreshing with  plum, cherry and berry fruit, light but sapid and dense with a long, juicy finish. Serve quite cool and be happy!

Texier 2020 Vin de France Le Clau Vieille Serine

"From a handful of rows in our 0.5 ha of a very particular strain of Serine. Planted in the 1930’s in the Masson parcel of Saint-Julien en-Saint-Alban in the lieu-dit Le Clau. They present unique ampelographic qualities, very different from the Serines we find in Brézème or other Northern vineyards, notably very low alcoholic degrees when in full maturity. All replacements here have been done through marcottage, without the introduction of any clones. We are still not sure of their exact nature, and certain ampelography experts believe it may not even be Syrah. It may actually be Bravade or Exbrayat. We've decided to vinify these separately and the result is unique. We’ve discovered a very particular personality, and it’s an immense pleasure to share this with you.Whole-cluster, with a light treading for 20% of the grapes. 6-8 days of maceration with an immersed cap, no extraction. Native yeasts. Aged 18 months in demi-muids. No filtration or fining. No sulfur was added at any point during vinification, aging or bottling."  (The following note is from our June 2022 tasting - the wine closed up but is now back in form, aeration or aging is recommended before drinking) The 2020 Le Clau shows an inky black/purple color with bright rim.  Vivid black fruit aromas (boysenberry, blackberry) with black peppercorn, earth, mint, garrigue - develops quickly with aeration. The wine is intense but not heavy with a very mineral attack and very firm acidity with bright cassis and blackberry fruit that emerges with air. A fascinating melange of black fruits, anise and minerals  lingers lightly on the palate in the very long finsh. This is an extraordinary wine that is great fun to taste now but 5 years in the cellar, and perhaps much longer, should create something quite unique. David Lillie

Texier 2020 Châteauneuf-du-Pape Vieilles Vignes

The 2020 Texier CDP Vieilles Vignes is 100% Grenache from 80+ year-old vines on alluvial gravel of glacial origin called ‘galets roulés’ on the northern slopes of "la Crau." The wine shows a bright red/black color and astonishing aromas of violet, red currant and crushed raspberry over deep plum liqueur, just beautiful. The palate is lush and supple with bright acidity, with gorgeous round red and black fruits that coat the mouth and linger on the long finish with firm acidity, citrus, earth and mineral notes under the exuberant fruit. On day two, more typical notes of garrigue and black cherry emerge... Like a great red Burgundy made with Grenache, pair it with an elegant cuisine (or drink it for breakfast). Long term aging is certainly possible, but we recommend drinking it now, without restraint... DL  "2020 Chateauneuf rouge : reminds me of 2000. In one word : balance. Clos des Papes 2007 Châteauneuf-du-Pape Blanc

The extraordinary Clos des Papes CDP Blanc is from 3 hectares on clay-sandy, galet stone covered soils mainly on La Croze, of Grenache blanc (richness), Roussanne (gras), Clairette (elegance), Bourboulenc (acidity), Picpoul (acidity), Picardin (elegance). The beautiful 2007 shows a "steady yellow robe. Has an open, waxen, honey with fennel or aniseed, peach and flowers aroma – I think that qualifies for “abundant variety” - and Poire William floats in the air, too. It has dried fruits, vanilla flavours, with honey and hazelnut or almond. A good, rocking wine with energy and ripeness. The aftertaste is spiced. Drink until 2029-32" drinkrhone

Clos des Papes 2012 Châteauneuf-du-Pape Blanc

The estate's outstanding white wine is made from 3 hectares on clay-sandy, galet stone covered soils mainly on La Croze, usually from equal shares of Grenache blanc (richness), Roussanne (gras), Clairette (elegance), Bourboulenc (acidity), Picpoul (acidity), Picardin (elegance, since 2000), “Picpoul & Bourboulenc hyper important for the acidity in the wine” - Vincent Avril. Steel vat fermented at 12°-16°C, raised on lees 6 months, fined before Christmas, malo blocked.  2012: "shiny, fine yellow; white peach, appealing summer scents and flowers on the nose: an interesting bouquet, has genuine Rhône depth, gras and bounty that are well channelled. There is a very good transfer from the nose to the palate: the white fruits are fine, accompanied by licorice and aniseed. Tender wine which is a good whole, while its acidity and degree work together. Hazelnut is marked, while there is a nectarine skin taste also. There is round, appealing late content, a delightful final point of aniseed. The texture and aroma are lovely here. “The Picpoul and the Bourboulenc are hyper important in a year like this; the Grenache blanc risks too high a degree; maturity was very good this year,” Vincent Avril. “Drink it with turbot, salmon, lobster à la plancha.” Drink until 2015, then it will shut down, so revert from 2021. Less Grenache blanc this year (10%) after coulure and and 1% more of each of the other varieties. Drink until 2035" - drinkrhone

La Florane 2020 CDR Villages St Maurice Echevin "Rouville" Syrah

The 2020 La Florane is 85% Syrah, 15% Grenache grown at 1200 ft of altitude in the village of Saint-Maurice - it's a Southern Rhone Syrah with Northern Rhone style and superb elegance and length. Mostly old vine Syrah in Biodynamic farming on clay/limestone and galets roulés soils. "full red robe; the bouquet is wide, well sustained, serves an aroma of incense, spiced plum, cloves in the picture. There is freshness through the palate, which runs directly with crisp plum fruited content, sustains its firm richness well, finishes with some good mineral thrust.  Drink from 2023, allowing time for the rocky late notes to infuse a little more. It carries very good ferrous-iron minerality, typical of its terroir" says drinkrhone.

Texier 2020 Côtes du Rhône St. Julien en St. Alban

(Arrives 2/21) Syrah from 20-40-year-old vines in St. J’s warmer microclimate & granite soils. Made like Brézème version: mainly whole-cluster; no sulfur. Gorgeous tarry/meaty/smoky/floral profile on nose & palate. Bright acidity and moderate tannins..."The 2020 Saint-Julien en Saint-Alban from Éric Texier is a fine bottle of young syrah. The bouquet is deep, precise and beautifully black fruity in personality, wafting from the glass in a mix of cassis, pepper, expresso, grilled venison, a nice touch of black olive, granite soil tones and plenty of upper register smokiness. On the palate the wine is full-bodied, ripe and very well balanced, with a fine core of fruit, lovely soil inflection and grip, fine-grained tannins and a long, complex and seamlessly balanced finish. This is still a puppy and quite primary in personality today, but also quite easy to drink. It is not a crime to be opening bottles today, but more complexity will certainly emerge with just a modicum of patience." - John Gilman "The View from the Cellar." Serve a bit cool...

Mas de Boislauzon 2014 Châteauneuf-du-Pape Tradition

Mas de Boislauzon is a lesser-known, over-achieving estate located in the northern sector of Châteauneuf, with parcels in the lieu-dits of Cabrières, Boislauzon, Lagardiole, Palestor and Pignan. The 2014 is drinking beautifully now, with pretty floral blackberry, black cherry and prune aromas with hints of licorice and garrigue. The palate is quite full and well structured, opening up nicely with complex black fruit liqueur, spice, earth and citrus notes., showing terrific ripeness and depth, but with a nice freshness as well, typical of the vintage. Bosquet des Papes 2012 Châteauneuf-du-Pape Chante le Merle VV

Mostly Grenache from 1915-1930, with 0-15% Syrah, 5-15% Mourvèdre, from Mont-Redon (N-W), La Gardiole (N-E), Les Brusquières (N-W), Pignan nord (N-E), Barbe d’Asne (W), whole bunch fermentation of Grenache   "Very Grenache, medium depth red robe. Notably pure, very appealing Grenache red fruit aroma, one of striking elegance and come hither. The finesse of Châteauneuf-du-Pape as it should be here. There are light side notes of smoke, flint. Off we go on the palate: there is a great blend of fine fruit and fine tannin. This is an über elegant, pure Châteauneuf, the sort that has been absent for so many years recently. It ends on mineral, dentelle-toothsome clarity, the red fruit cool, precise – it provides dainty little droplets of that fruit. It looks north for inspiration, good. It is discreetly long. Drink from 2017 until 2032" - drinkrhone

The extraordinary Clos des Papes CDP Blanc is from 3 hectares on clay-sandy, galet stone covered soils mainly on La Croze, of Grenache blanc (richness), Roussanne (gras), Clairette (elegance), Bourboulenc (acidity), Picpoul (acidity), Picardin (elegance). We were fortunate to taste the 2008 on Thursday, 5/25 - it was a great experience - truly a magnificent wine and drinking perfectly at 14 years of age. The color is a bright pale gold, showing exuberant, only slightly secondary aormas, with dried fruits, almond, citrus confit, eastern spices, stone, incense - quite fascinating. The palate is dense and very sapid, with firm acidity and very pronounced mineral flavors, white and yellow fruit confit, anise, apricot...somewhat indescribable, with a fabulous mineral finish and great length. "Be in no hurry – this is a prime example of an age-worthy white Châteauneuf. A long-term wine. Enjoy until 2030." says drinkrhone. Gorgeous wine! David Lillie

Has a good dried fruits flavour, along with aniseed which means there is freshness. It is richly textured in the 2009 vein, and the fruit is accompanied by vanilla moments. A thorough run of sturdy flavour here, a wine that must be drunk with food, classic dishes.
