Domaine de la Roche Bleue

Superb Jasnières and Coteaux du Loir from Domaine de la Roche Bleue!

Share

We're very excited to have another shipment arriving soon from Sebastien Cornille at the Domaine de la Roche Bleue! The 2022 vintage is a huge success at this estate - the wines have an extra layer of ripeness while retaining the bright acicity and terroir expression always present in the Roche Bleue wines - products of great organic farming, natural vinifications and the unique limestone soils in these cool regions just north of Tours in the Loire Valley.

We're especially happy to have the delicious 2022 Coteaux du Loir "L'Oree de la Berterie" back in the store! This wine sold out almost immediatley on arrival last October due to rave reviews from our staff - and from Lettie Teague's enthusiastic note in the Wall Street Journal: "the beautifully balanced, decidedly lush 2022 Domaine de la Roche Bleue Cuvee L’Orée de la Berterie Coteaux du Loir ($27) was nothing short of stunning. Its producer, Sebastien Cornille, has earned a cult following for his Chenins, and I can see why." If you love Chenin, buy a case and drink it over the next five to eight years!

Also just arrived, the 2022 Jasnres Sec shows more fruit than the 2021, quite round and ripe but still with a certain austerity, revealing almond, pear, stone, lemon and chalky minerals that continue in the long, very mineral finish. This is a young, complex Jasnières from a beautiful vintage that will benefit from decanting and should age well for eight to ten years.

The lively and lucious 2022 "Guinguette" is mostly Pineau D'aunis with Gamay - it's particularly delicious in the 2022 vintage - "surprisingly vibrant and bright aciditity for such a warm vintage, showing a fruity nose of berries and cherries with baking spice and a lively body with crunchy cherries and zesty currants. Exactly the kind of wine to drink on a riverside barge whilst dancing to accordion music and nibling on cheese and charcuterie" says Giselle.

Made only in the best vintages, we're very pleased to offer our small allocation of the 2022 "Belle D'Aunis." 100% Pineau d'Aunis from old vines in Marçon and Chahaignes, this is a superb expression of this wonderful grape, grown on clay/limestone soils with silex, made in a style that presrves the delicacy and beauty of the fruit, even in a very ripe vintage such as 2022. We loved a sample from barrel tasted last winter and the Revue du Vin de France says "A nose of sweet spices and pepper, a silky and refreshing palate where the pineau d'aunis expresses its magnificent potential for finesse and character, well accompanied by delicate aging in barrels. An example of the simplicity and purity of grand Pineau d’Aunis." Highly recommended!

Domaine de la Roche Bleue was established in 2008 by Sébastien Cornille, a native of Sancerre, with 3.5 hectares in Jasnières and 1.5 hectares in the Coteaux-du-Loir. Now totaling about 6.5 hectares, the estate is certified organic and uses biodynamic methods as well, very much in the style of his neighbor in the vines, Eric Nicolas. Sébastien works the soils without deep plowing, harvests by hand, vinifies with wild yeasts and without additives and uses minimal SO2.

"The terroir here is full of energy and freshness with a touch of austerity that allows the wines to improve with age. Our work consists of intervening as little as possible, mainly by hand, and letting the vines live in a natural environment whose balance is based on biodiversity in and around the vines. The vineyard is managed organically with a biodynamic approach. To limit the impact of copper and sulfur, the only mineral products used, we use herbal teas from plants selected by us according to the season and the desired objective. Short pruning respectful of sap flows is followed by green operations to promote aeration of the bunches and limit diseases. The soils are lightly worked, respecting the biodynamic lunar calendar so as to never have bare soil but to control natural grass cover. In the cellar, pneumatic pressing is long and gentle for the whites and the red macerations are adapted so as not to extract too much dry matter. The search for freedom and fluidity of wines is our quest."

Wines arrive at the new shop, approximately March 1st. 10% discount on 12 btls or more.

Roche Bleue 2022 Coteaux du Loir L'Orée de la Berterie

This is a beautiful Chenin Blanc from Sébastien Cornille at Domaine de la Roche Bleue, from 30+-year-old vines on slopes (80%) and terraces (20%) in the lieu-dit "Le Haut Perray" in Chahaignes, Coteaux du Loir. Thin red clay soils over limestone and deeper clay soils with silex giving yields of about 30 ha/hl. The grapes are harvested late to counterbalance the vibrant acidity normal in this terroir. The 2022 L'Orée de la Berterie shows lovely ripe aromas  - honeyed pear, peach and kiwi with almond,  floral and mineral notes, elegant and pure. Dried pear, citrus peel, almond, stone and herbal notes on the round and ripe palate with terrific density and a long, quite firm citrus and mineral finish. This is an outstanding young Chenin that will open up over the next five to ten years, and it's a superb value as well. Serve with ceviche of fluke, fish in sauce, roast chicken and mild cheeses. DL A true expression of the warmer 2022 vintage, round and plush with honey  and quince balanced by vibrant acidity typical of this northerly terroir. GH

Roche Bleue 2022 Coteaux du Loir La Guinguette

Sébastien Cornille's lovely 2022 "Guinguette" is made principally from Pineau d’Aunis, with Gamay, sourced from 30+year-old vines in organic/biodynamic farming. Fairly short maceration, native yeasts, semi-carbonic fermentation of whole bunches and destemmed grapes according to the “millefeuille” principle. The 2022 Guinguette is a superb "vin de soif" offering bright aromas of peppery raspberry, cherry and violets, quite ripe and generous in this warm vintage. The palate shows light but sappy raspberry, plum and red currant fruit with chalky minerals, spice and citrus. The finish is long and refreshing. Serve this lovely wine slightly chilled with charcuterie, of course, grilled pork and lamb, bluefish (?) and mild cow cheeses.  David Lillie  Surprisingly vibrant and bright aciditity for such a warm vintage, showing a fruity nose of berries and cherries with baking spice and a lively body with crunchy cherries and zesty currants. Exactly the kind of wine to drink on a riverside barge whilst dancing to accordion music and nibling on cheese and charcuterie... a French Guinguette! Giselle Hamburg

Roche Bleue 2022 Coteaux du Loir La Belle D'Aunis

The talented Sébastien Cornille is making some of the most beautiful wines in Jasnières and the Coteaux du Loir - The 2022 "Belle d'Aunis" is 100% Pineau d'Aunis from old vines in clay with silex soils over limestone in the Coteaux du Loir; 2 to 3 week semi-carbonic maceration in foudre, slow pressing followed by one year of aging in 1 to 3 year-old barrels. This is old-vine Pineau d'Aunis made in a style that presrves the delicacy and beauty of the fruit, even in a very ripe vintage such as 2022. A sample tasted last winter showed lovely perfumed aromas of pomegranate, red currant and ripe raspberry with a bit of white pepper and earth. The palate was bright and sappy with dense red berries and mineral flavors with firm but silky tannins and a lingering finish of refreshing acidity and vibrant fruit. Here is a recent note in the Review du Vin de France: "A nose of sweet spices and pepper, a silky and refreshing palate where the pineau d'aunis expresses its magnificent potential for finesse and character, well accompanied by delicate aging in barrels. An example of the simplicity and purity of grand Pineau d’Aunis. Drink now or in 10 years!" We have loved every vintage of this wine and recommend it highly! David Lillie
