Clos des Papes 2007 Châteauneuf-du-Pape Blanc

The extraordinary Clos des Papes CDP Blanc is from 3 hectares on clay-sandy, galet stone covered soils mainly on La Croze, of Grenache blanc (richness), Roussanne (gras), Clairette (elegance), Bourboulenc (acidity), Picpoul (acidity), Picardin (elegance). The beautiful 2007 shows a "steady yellow robe. Has an open, waxen, honey with fennel or aniseed, peach and flowers aroma – I think that qualifies for “abundant variety” - and Poire William floats in the air, too. It has dried fruits, vanilla flavours, with honey and hazelnut or almond. A good, rocking wine with energy and ripeness. The aftertaste is spiced. Drink until 2029-32" drinkrhone

Clos des Papes 2012 Châteauneuf-du-Pape Blanc

The estate's outstanding white wine is made from 3 hectares on clay-sandy, galet stone covered soils mainly on La Croze, usually from equal shares of Grenache blanc (richness), Roussanne (gras), Clairette (elegance), Bourboulenc (acidity), Picpoul (acidity), Picardin (elegance, since 2000), “Picpoul & Bourboulenc hyper important for the acidity in the wine” - Vincent Avril. Steel vat fermented at 12°-16°C, raised on lees 6 months, fined before Christmas, malo blocked.  2012: "shiny, fine yellow; white peach, appealing summer scents and flowers on the nose: an interesting bouquet, has genuine Rhône depth, gras and bounty that are well channelled. There is a very good transfer from the nose to the palate: the white fruits are fine, accompanied by licorice and aniseed. Tender wine which is a good whole, while its acidity and degree work together. Hazelnut is marked, while there is a nectarine skin taste also. There is round, appealing late content, a delightful final point of aniseed. The texture and aroma are lovely here. “The Picpoul and the Bourboulenc are hyper important in a year like this; the Grenache blanc risks too high a degree; maturity was very good this year,” Vincent Avril. “Drink it with turbot, salmon, lobster à la plancha.” Drink until 2015, then it will shut down, so revert from 2021. Less Grenache blanc this year (10%) after coulure and and 1% more of each of the other varieties. Drink until 2035" - drinkrhone

Clos des Papes 2008 Châteauneuf-du-Pape Blanc

The extraordinary Clos des Papes CDP Blanc is from 3 hectares on clay-sandy, galet stone covered soils mainly on La Croze, of Grenache blanc (richness), Roussanne (gras), Clairette (elegance), Bourboulenc (acidity), Picpoul (acidity), Picardin (elegance). We were fortunate to taste the 2008 on Thursday, 5/25 - it was a great experience - truly a magnificent wine and drinking perfectly at 14 years of age. The color is a bright pale gold, showing exuberant, only slightly secondary aormas, with dried fruits, almond, citrus confit, eastern spices, stone, incense - quite fascinating. The palate is dense and very sapid, with firm acidity and very pronounced mineral flavors, white and yellow fruit confit, anise, apricot...somewhat indescribable, with a fabulous mineral finish and great length. "Be in no hurry – this is a prime example of an age-worthy white Châteauneuf. A long-term wine. Enjoy until 2030." says drinkrhone. Gorgeous wine! David Lillie

Clos des Papes 2009 Châteauneuf-du-Pape Blanc

The extraordinary Clos des Papes CDP Blanc is from 3 hectares on clay-sandy, galet stone covered soils mainly on La Croze, of Grenache blanc (richness), Roussanne (gras), Clairette (elegance), Bourboulenc (acidity), Picpoul (acidity), Picardin (elegance). 2009: " quite a full yellow; hazelnut lead aroma with aniseed, also butter behind – a tight but potentially generous nose. Has a good dried fruits flavour, along with aniseed which means there is freshness. It is richly textured in the 2009 vein, and the fruit is accompanied by vanilla moments. A thorough run of sturdy flavour here, a wine that must be drunk with food, classic dishes. Its power will see it going until 2032 or so. “I would love a grilled lobster, lobster à la plancha with this,” Vincent Avril." - drinkrhone

Vieux Donjon 2012 Châteauneuf-du-Pape Blanc

50% Clairette blanche, 50% Roussanne  steel vat fermented, steel vat raised 3 months, malo blocked, first wine 1993, “either drink in its first 2-3 years then be patient, for 10 years, for example, for a different, more complex style,” Claire Michel. This from drinkrhone - "pale yellow, green glints. Soft, appealing white fruits’ aroma, with light spice in the white plum fruit, along with an orange peel air – the bouquet is attractive, supple, welcoming. The palate has a winning gras richness, a smooth texture and citrus notes. The flavours resemble infused tea such as linden (tilleul) and apricot. It combines the magic 2012 formula of freshness and richness. Good with a smoked tuna and cold tomato dish. Up to sauced dishes – poultry, fish. Good harmony here, and length. Traditional in the sense of being a wine for la table. 14.5%" Drink until 2026

Bosquet des Papes 2015 Chateauneuf-du-Pape Blanc Tradition (1/18)

The 2015 Bosquet des Papes Blanc is particularly delicious in this exceptional vintage, combining beautiful ripeness with a surprising level of freshness and acidity., using only local grapes - Clairette, Bourboulenc and Grenache Blanc.  The wine shows slightly honeyed white fruits with hints of fennel and spice. The palate is ripe and supple but bright with pear, citrus and garrigue flavors that continue on the refreshing finish. Lovely wine - serve with grilled fish, fish in sauce, Asian foods, mild cheeses. DL  "The nose is broad, lucid, still reserved, marked by peach, camomile-aniseed (suggestive of Clairette, is being tasted blind), lightly honeyed airs, an oiliness of the south. The palate kicks off stylishly, bears white fruits with a sweet gras emerging towards the finish. Its acidity is fine, the freshness well captured and defined. The finish is nourishing, brings in fennel, thyme, local colour, is well rounded. Drink until 2030." drinkrhone

Gripa 2015 Saint-Joseph Le Berceau Blanc

The 2015 Gripa "Le Berceau" Blanc is 100% Marsanne frm 60+ year-old vines in the "Saint-Joseph" vineyard above Tournon. 215 cases made, a rare and beautiful wine. Reviewed in drinkrhone:  "pretty full yellow robe. The nose is large, not much open, bears a weighty and ripe fruit content. There are hints of petrol  and aniseed with a roasted nuts, nougat suggestion: we are further south than St Joseph on the nose. The palate is broad and sustained, right from the off. This imposes, and is a kingly wine with its steady assertion of ripe flavour and near red wine structure. This really covers the ground, takes you on an Ordnance Survey, detailed walk. Very good with all the greats of Vieille France cuisine, Escoffier school – pieds et paquets, ris de veau, poulet de Bresse in a morilles sauce – bring ‘em on! Decanting a necessity. It will be much better and more expressive when aged five years or more. Drink from mid-2018.  2,600 bottles made. 100% Marsanne. Drink until 2028-30 Oct 2016."

Gripa 2012 Saint-Joseph Rouge Le Berceau

We recently tasted the 2012 Gripa "Le Berceau" and like the Gonon 2012 it's really singing now and has another 6 to 10 years to go. Here's Livingstone-Learmonth from a 2017 review - "dark red robe. The nose is settling down well, has a meatiness, with expressive black berry fruits that are clear and rolling, a bit of Indian ink here. There is some reduction, so decant it. This is gracious, a good example of 2012, a beau spread of dark berry fruits with fine tannins, a little crunch from them, tar and coffee on the close. This has a handsome make-up, good glint in the fruit. It persists well, the aftertaste a touch floral. 13.5°. Drink until 2028-30"

Domaine Alary 2016 Cairanne Jean de Verde

The profound 2016 Alary Cairanne "La Jean de Verde" is from 95% Grenache and 5% Carignan planted in 1955. It's a dense and beautiful wine - here's drinkrhone: "deep, dark robe; the bouquet is broad, sustained, presents a mass of black berry fruit, prune fruit such is the innate ripeness. There’s a top note of sage. The palate is thoroughly coated with its deep content, lets out only a little stream of tasty, concentrated black fruit juice for the moment. It lengthens with much assurance, into some still rocky tannins that bring a chewy extra layer to proceedings. Reach for the knife and fork to drink this. It’s is full of life, and deserves sauced dishes, game, red meats. Decant it. Best 2020 - 2040."

Saint-Damien 2010 Gigondas Les Souteyrades

The 2010  Saint-Damien "Souteyrades" is from old vines of Grenache and Mourvedre on clay soils. 6 stars from drinkrhone! - "dark, black tinted robe. Modernist, cleanly scooped out black fruit aroma, with polished, fine grain oak overlay, black olive paste – the south travels across its bountiful width. The palate is textured with an oily gras richness, a probing depth, spice. Has finesse and an aroma of faint violet in the blackberry and prune fruit which is pure. It develops real momentum as it goes, is classy in its fruit and its excellent clarity and precision of tannins. A great future lies ahead. Best 2015 to 2030."

Bosquet des Papes 2012 Châteauneuf-du-Pape Chante le Merle VV

Mostly Grenache from 1915-1930, with 0-15% Syrah, 5-15% Mourvèdre, from Mont-Redon (N-W), La Gardiole (N-E), Les Brusquières (N-W), Pignan nord (N-E), Barbe d’Asne (W), whole bunch fermentation of Grenache   "Very Grenache, medium depth red robe. Notably pure, very appealing Grenache red fruit aroma, one of striking elegance and come hither. The finesse of Châteauneuf-du-Pape as it should be here. There are light side notes of smoke, flint. Off we go on the palate: there is a great blend of fine fruit and fine tannin. This is an über elegant, pure Châteauneuf, the sort that has been absent for so many years recently. It ends on mineral, dentelle-toothsome clarity, the red fruit cool, precise – it provides dainty little droplets of that fruit. It looks north for inspiration, good. It is discreetly long. Drink from 2017 until 2032" - drinkrhone

Ferrand 2007 Châteauneuf-du-Pape

87-95% Grenache, 5-13% Syrah, Mourvèdre, Bourboulenc, Cinsault from sandy soils with some galet stones, hand harvested, 90% de-stemmed, from 45 year-old vines in the La Gardiale and Cabrieres vineyards, and the other half from vines planted in 1904, 1910 and 1920 in the La Guariguette and Les Jaumes vineyards. Harvested by hand, selection on the sorting table with de-stemming done more or less depending on the vintage. No acidification, no sulfites (until bottling) Aged in concrete vats and stainless steel tanks. A big and brawny wine typical of 2007 Chateauneuf. drinkrhone: "Shiny, quite full red robe. Hung game and reduction show on the nose, with a pepper hover, very much red meat and 2007 depth of mulled red berry fruit within. This has a raspberry liqueur flavour, so states a slightly separate case to the nose. This is a bit of a Wild Ride, but is a stimulating one. It runs freely, with the fruit persistent, a little high octane. Drink until 2030.

Charvin 2007 Châteauneuf-du-Pape

82-85% Grenache (av 50 yrs), 5-8% Syrah, young vines, 5% Mourvèdre, 5% Vaccarèse  from Les Cabrières, 1 ha L'Arnesque, Le Devès, some sand, clay-limestone, galet stones soils, light crush, whole bunch 20-25 day fermentation, 1-2 daily pumping overs, press wine added, concrete vat raised 18-21 months, unfiltered. From the drinkrhone.com review: " red robe. Tea, smoke, sweet raspberry aroma here with a good, rocky cut of freedom and lift. It is good and upright, will be stylish. The palate links well to the nose. This possesses naked qualities via its pure fruit and clarity of definition. It is STGT wine (wine of terroir), very close to its source lands. Has a smoky, garrigue exit. It is a real winner, a wine for lovers of stylish, clear wine, no make-up worn. 15°. Drink untill 2033."

Charvin 2010 Châteauneuf-du-Pape

(An open bottle of this showed up at the store a few weeks ago - it was fabulous...go for it!) 6 stars from drinkrhone!  What a treat - one of the top CDPs of 2010, now reaching maturity! What follows is our review from 2015. "The 2010 Charvin is indeed a beautiful Chateauneuf that shows a bright black/garnet color with very floral and sweet aromas of crushed  blackberry with a bit of tart plum, quite pure and pretty with hints of  black raspberry, brown spice, garrigue, licorice, earth and roast meat emerging with aeration. The palate is dense and sapid but beautifully balanced with sweet blackberry and black cherry fruit with game, spice, earth, tea and citrus. The finish is firm and long with dense red currant fruit, licorice, spicy citrus and earthy flavors that linger on the palate. This is a superb Châteauneuf-du-Pape that can be enjoyed immensely now or cellared until 2032 - 2035."  David Lillie (2015 tasting)

Chapelle St. Theodoric 2009 Châteauneuf du Pape Le Grand Pin

Chapelle Saint-Theodoric is a joint venture between the Grangeon family of Domaine de Cristia and  importer and CDP lover Peter Weygandt. Le Grand Pin is all old-vine Grenache from a parcel in the Pignan vineyard on sandy soils. Whole-cluster fermentation in concrete vat with wild yeasts, minimal extraction, aged in 4 to 10 year-old large casks. The 2009 vintage in Châteauneuf can be a fraught one. Portlike with lashings of oak and a soupçon of garrigue, right? Well, in the case of Chapelle St. Theodiric's Le Grand Pin it's ripe for sure, not stewed and not a monument to cooperage. Garrigue? Absolutely, with some leather, and warmth on the nose and palate. But there’s an intriguing soil component here—the edges and grain haven’t been buffed out in the modern fashion. The palate is ripe with dark plummy fruits, a dark salty sapidity, and tends more toward sauvage than overtly polished.  It’s a strapping wine that’s full of that Midi sun, but there’s character here and if you prefer you Châteauneuf with soil and soul rather than confiture and consultants, there’s a lot to like here. Caveat lector, this was given a quick decant, and served at cellar temperature. Delicious with roasted duck leg, fingerling potatoes persillé, and sautéed spinach from the Greenmarket, though I might opt for a daube or lamb shanks next time. If you like more earthy and savory character to your CDP, this is definitely well worth a look. John McIlwain

Usseglio, Raymond 2016 Châteauneuf-du-Pape Cuvée Impérial

This is certainly one of the finest of the 2016 Châteauneuf-du-Papes! (6 stars from drinkrhone) 90-95% Grenache planted in 1901-02, from sandy soils on Les Pialons, La Girardette, 10% Counoise, Cinsault, Terret Noir, Clairette, 40% destemmed, aged in concrete vats. "...full red robe. The bouquet lies in wait thanks to the pedigree and natural thickness of the black fruits from the old Grenache vines, has an established oiliness from them, and shows cool sides outside them. Prune, a touch of leather feature. The palate is rich and rolling with a gentle wave of spherical content and luxurious, natural tannins that lead into black olives, and lightly salted finish. This is unhurried wine, with great ageing potential, and, mercifully, no headiness. The layers of fruit and content are impressive. Drink from 2022, so there can be an extra level of variety and stimulation. I can wish for no more from this great Châteauneuf."

The 2009 is a less tannic and more ready-to-drink version of the 2016 - beautiful now and for another 8 to 10 yeaars.
