Happy New Year from Louis/Dressner Selections! New Arrivals, Returning Favorites and Price Reductions...

Share

What better way to start the new year than featuring wines from our friends at Louis/Dressner Selections, our most important suppliers when we opened the store in 2001, and they remain so today due to their sensational collection of organic, Biodynamic and natural wines.

Of course we'll start off in Chinon, with our absolute last inventory of the brilliant 2020 "La Croix Boissée" and 2020 "les Mollières" from Matthieu and Bernard Baudry - Don't miss them! And there has been a slight price reduction in the 2008 Olga Raffault "Les Picasses" - this vintage brought higher acidity than 2009 and 2010 but with good ripeness due to the late harvest. Well worth trying!

Eric Texier, outside the cave in Charnay

Speaking of price reductions, a few of our favorite wines by our mischievous friend Éric Texier have recently come down in price - the 2016 Vieille Serines from Brezeme and St Julien en St Alban, and the brilliant 2020 Le Clau. The Le Clau was sensational on release but then shut down - Eric says "last bottle of 2020 Clau we had was gorgeous, after decanting." It's a unique and beautiful wine!

Beaujolais! New arrivals from Georges Descombes! And a remeinder about the fantastic Desvignes 2022s.  Georges Descombes is one of the true masters of Beaujolais and we can't wait to drink his 2022 Morgon and 2022 Brouilly which will arrive at the store this Wednesday. 2022 is a lovely vintage in Beaujolais with the ripe sapid fruit balanced by freshness and good acidity...yum! This was quite apparent in the 22's from Domaine Desvignes, including the profound old-vine juice in the 2022 Javernieres "Aux Pierres" - it's one of the most impressive and age-worthy Beaujolais we have tasted in a long time - about 3 cases remain.

Touraine! Villemade, Bonhomme, Le Briseau and Morantin to the rescue with unique and delicious natural wines! New stock has just arrived in NY...

From Hervé Villemade his delicious 2022 Cheverny Rouge is back in stock and his beautifully ripe and pure-fruited 2022 Vin de France Pinot Noir has just arrived - it's one of the most gulpable Pinots on the planet!

In 2021 Hervé made just one cuvée of Romorantin due to the tiny yields in this vintage - the 2021 "Romorantin Domaine" is a dense and complex Romo with vibrant acidity - it's a truly great "food wine" and a sensational value!

Herve Villemade, a while back...

Noella Morantin makes some of our favorite Gamays - just arrived is the juicy and vibrant 2022 "La Boudinerie," a perfect wine for charcuterie and chicken dishes, serve cool...

And speaking of Gamay, Pierre-O Bonhomme's perennial favorite "Le Telquel" has just returned to NY - blended with Cabernet Franc in 2022 and very "gouleyant." Pierre-O's "La Tesniere Rouge" and "La Tesniere Blanc" are extraordinary and unique - the rouge is 100% Pineau D'Aunis and the Blanc is 75% Menu Pineau and 25% Chenin. Both are big favorites at CSW that deserve your attention. And spearking of Pineau D'Aunis, let's not forget Nathalie Gaubicher's instant hit, the Mama Mouchi, a young-vines Pineau D'Aunis from a vineyard near Jasnieres. It's vibrant and bright, and much more juicy and inviting than its big sibling, the Patapon Rouge.

Muscadet! Last but not least, a very delicious Muscadet that we have told you about many times. 2022 is a superb vintage for the Domaine de la Pepiere "Les Gras Moutons" - buy a case and drink it over the next five years, you'll be glad you did!!

Texier 2020 Châteauneuf-du-Pape Vieilles Vignes

The 2020 Texier CDP Vieilles Vignes is 100% Grenache from 80+ year-old vines on alluvial gravel of glacial origin called ‘galets roulés’ on the northern slopes of "la Crau." The wine shows a bright red/black color and astonishing aromas of violet, red currant and crushed raspberry over deep plum liqueur, just beautiful. The palate is lush and supple with bright acidity, with gorgeous round red and black fruits that coat the mouth and linger on the long finish with firm acidity, citrus, earth and mineral notes under the exuberant fruit. On day two, more typical notes of garrigue and black cherry emerge... Like a great red Burgundy made with Grenache, pair it with an elegant cuisine (or drink it for breakfast). Long term aging is certainly possible, but we recommend drinking it now, without restraint... DL  "2020 Chateauneuf rouge : reminds me of 2000. In one word : balance. Between fruit and structure, acidity and roundness, aromatic expression and aging potential. This wine pleases me a lot. Unusual lately... Harvested late September under perfect conditions. Whole cluster of course, 18 months in demi muids. A tiny bit of grenache blanc in it, since we forgot to harvest 2 rows when we did the whites! 1956 bottles and 24 magnums." Eric Texier

Texier 2020 Vin de France Le Clau Vieille Serine

"From a handful of rows in our 0.5 ha of a very particular strain of Serine. Planted in the 1930’s in the Masson parcel of Saint-Julien en-Saint-Alban in the lieu-dit Le Clau. They present unique ampelographic qualities, very different from the Serines we find in Brézème or other Northern vineyards, notably very low alcoholic degrees when in full maturity. All replacements here have been done through marcottage, without the introduction of any clones. We are still not sure of their exact nature, and certain ampelography experts believe it may not even be Syrah. It may actually be Bravade or Exbrayat. We've decided to vinify these separately and the result is unique. We’ve discovered a very particular personality, and it’s an immense pleasure to share this with you.Whole-cluster, with a light treading for 20% of the grapes. 6-8 days of maceration with an immersed cap, no extraction. Native yeasts. Aged 18 months in demi-muids. No filtration or fining. No sulfur was added at any point during vinification, aging or bottling."  (The following note is from our June 2022 tasting - the wine closed up but is now back in form, aeration or aging is recommended before drinking) The 2020 Le Clau shows an inky black/purple color with bright rim.  Vivid black fruit aromas (boysenberry, blackberry) with black peppercorn, earth, mint, garrigue - develops quickly with aeration. The wine is intense but not heavy with a very mineral attack and very firm acidity with bright cassis and blackberry fruit that emerges with air. A fascinating melange of black fruits, anise and minerals  lingers lightly on the palate in the very long finsh. This is an extraordinary wine that is great fun to taste now but 5 years in the cellar, and perhaps much longer, should create something quite unique. David Lillie

Descombes, Georges 2022 Brouilly

Georges Descombes is one of the great producers of natural Beaujolais -  the Descombes Brouilly comes from 3.5 hectares on steep slopes, farmed with organic methods. Carbonic maceration with whole clusters then a slow vertical press to finish the fermentation. No additives, a small addition of SO2 before bottling. Based on last winter's tasting, the 2022 shows beautifully ripe but high-toned red fruits, with lovely aromas of cherry, strawberry, blackberry and violet with herbal and citrus notes. The palate is fresh and mineral, a bit lighter and brighter than the Morgon, very sapid and velvety, infused with berry fruits and citrusy acids, and the finish is long and elegant.  Georges Descombes is perhaps the finest producer in the region over the last ten years, making consistently great wines that are completely affordable. This is a lovely food-friendly Brouilly to serve, quite cool, with chicken, pork, charcuterie and mild cheeses. SE/DL

Descombes, Georges 2022 Morgon

Georges Descombes is one of the premiere vignerons in Beaujolais. His farming is organic and his winemaking is very traditional; using native yeasts, semi-carbonic maceration, and very little sulfur added at bottling. The 2022 Morgon showed beautifully, tasted last winter, a bit fuller and deeper than the Regnié and Brouilly, as usuaul, showing ripe aromas of raspberry and strawberry  with elegant strawbery liqueur, earth and minerals on the palate with terrific length. The 2022s have beautiful ripeness but a bit less alcohol than 2018 - 2020,  a very good vintage for Beaujolais. This is a gorgeous wine that should be served slightly chilled with just about anything - enjoy over the next three to five years. (Drinking beautifully after 4 days in the fridge...)

Desvignes 2022 Morgon Javernières

Claude-Emannuelle and Louis-Benoit are the seventh generation of winemakers at Desvignes and the domain was one of the first in Morgon to "estate-bottle" beginning in 1955. "The spirit of our vinification is between the Beaujolais carbonic maceration and a Burgundy vinification," she says. The parcel "Javernieres," on the lower southeast corner of the Cote de Py, is considered by the Desvignes as their best terroir. Here the thicker topsoil with more clay and iron oxide gives a more generous wine. The 2022 seems a bit softer and more generous that the "Cote de Py" showing a deep red/garnet color, with aromas of black raspberry, cherry and strawberry, floral and elegant. The palate is beautifully textured with chalky red and black fruits with floral, spice and citrus notes. This has an elegant and full-bodied roundness, but with the acidity and tannin to allow long-term aging.  Serve a bit cool and enjoy now, best after 3 to 5 years and then until 2035+  David Lillie

Villemade, Herve 2022 Cheverny Rouge

(60% Pinot Noir, 40% Gamay grown on sandy clay and flint soils over limestone in Cellettes, Chitenay and Fougères sur Bièvre, AOC Cheverny; 15-day whole cluster fermentation, aged in old barrels) 2022 is another great vintage for this light and lovely Cheverny Rouge from Hervé Villemade, similar to 2018 and 2020 but perhaps a bit brighter, really lovelu!  Slight reduction then very pretty aromas of plum, strawberry and blood orange with rose and white pepper; tart cherry and chalky raspberry/strawberry fruit on the palate, light but sappy and long with earthy citrus and berry fruits in the refreshing finish. This is a delightfully natural thirst-quenching red - serve cool with any chicken or pork dish, charcuterie and mild cheeses. DL

Villemade 2021 Cour-Cheverny Domaine

"Romorantin, the official grape of the Cour-Cheverny AOC, appreciates sandy clay/limestone soils where it offers a wine of great character that mixes elegant vegetal and floral notes (cut grass, violets, a touch of mint), often slightly honeyed with notes of ripe fruit (roast pear) lightly marked by the elevage in old barrels. The finish is fresh, tight with saline minerals and bitter anise. A wine with good aging potential." - Villemade.net.  The 2021 "Domaine" combines the grapes from "Acacias" and "Chataigniers" in one cuvée that shows great ripeness combined with firm acidity. This is a great example of Romorantin and we expect it will age indefinitely. A great value as well, not to be missed! (Aged in tronconic vat and amphora for 12 months)

Bonhomme, Pierre-Olivier 2022 Vin de France Le Telquel

This "poil dur" is wagging its tail again in 2022, showing the ripeness and balance of this good vintage in the Loire Valley, with juicy aromas of blackberry, rose, spice and citrus. It's Gamay with a bit of Cabernet Franc in this vintage, with an extra layer of ripeness, and nice density of bright blackberry fruit, a bit floral and spicy. Quite refreshing with good length of lush berry fruits and citrusy acids in the finish. Whole-cluster 15-day maceration, fermented in tronconic vat, aged in barrel for 6 months. Serve a bit cool with charcuterie, chicken and pork - just delicious!  David Lillie

Bonhomme, Pierre-Olivier 2022 Vin de France La Tesniere Pineau D'Aunis

This is a light and lovely expression of Pineau d'Aunis from Pierre-Olivier Bonhomme, from vines near the Cher river  on clay with silex in organic and biodynamic farming. Aged in old futs and demi-muids, bottled without filtration, minimal SO2. The 2022 shows a pretty light red color with subtle aromas of ripe raspberry, citrus, white pepper and violets, really pretty. A touch deeper than the 2021, it nonetheless delivers on the Pineau D'Aunis promise of peppery and bright rustic flavors. Lip-smacking acidity and a beautifully refreshing finish of minerals, earth and pretty red fruits. This is a delightfully refreshing version of Pineau d'Aunis - serve cool!

Bonhomme, Pierre-Olivier 2022 Vin de France Tesniere Blanc (Menu Pineau)

Menu Pineau, also known as "Arbois" is described in Wine Grapes  (J. Robinson et al.) as "an old variety from the Val de Loire named after its similarity to Gros Pineau (Chenin Blanc)...although it has nothing to do with the village called Arbois in the Franche-Comté." It is an offspring of Gouais Blanc, along with many other European grapes, and is "a little more rustic, but less acid than Chenin Blanc," according to Thierry Puzelat. The 2022 La Tesnière Blanc by Pierre-Olivier Bonhomme is from organically-grown vines, 75% Menu Pineau and 25% Chenin Blanc. The wine shows a bright pale gold color, with subtle aromas of grapefruit, dried pear and apple, dried herbs, nettle, lemon peel, stone and caramel. The palate is austere and stony, with firm acidity and flavors of hazelnut, citrus, baked apple, earth and brown spice. A really fascinating wine and a great pairing with sushi, grilled fish with fennel, lemon chicken, aged goat cheeses and much more. Highly recommended to lovers of unique natural wines.

Pépière 2022 Muscadet Sèvre et Maine Les Gras Moutons

Muscadet for Thanksgiving? Yes, if it's the beautiful, ripe and perfectly balanced 2022 Gras Moutons! Les Gras Moutons is a great parcel on gneiss, in layers that permit a deep penetration by the vines, with sandy clay and amphibolite stones. The vines are at the top of a hill and on the south facing slope overlooking the Maine. (The name, by the way, does not refer to fat sheep, despite their presence on the label, but rather in local dialect, to the hilltop vineyard site.) This terroir produces lovely, classic Muscadet to drink young or after short-term cellaring of 5 to 10 years. The 2022 shows a bright very pale gold color. The nose is subtle but complex with a lovely melange of peach, pear, melon, lemon verbena, dried herbs and wet stone. The palate is marked by a nice bitter minerality underlying white fruits and citrus flavors. The finish is pure, clean and refreshing, perfectly balanced at 12% alcohol. This is a lovely Muscadet to enjoy with shellfish, fish and chips, fish in sauce and white meats over the next 10 years. Try to save a few - we're drinking the last of our 2018s which are fantastic...! David Lillie

Baudry 2020 Chinon Cuvée "Les Mollières"

2020 is the first individual bottling of this particular 1-hectare plot, Mollières, which previously was incorporated into the "Domaine" cuvée. Mollières lies to the west of the town of Chinon, on a high spot having both northern and southern exposure. It is a windy, well-exposed site with heavy clay and yellow limestone soils.  The fruit is destemmed without crushing and moved by gravity into unlined cement vats. Fermentation is spontaneous with native yeasts and without sulfur or temperature control; maceration lasts around two weeks with a daily pumpover and no punchdowns. The wine is aged in concrete tank for 15 months and bottled without filtration. Sulfur usage is minimal. The 2020 Mollières is lighter in body and color that the Croix Boissée and Clos Guillot, from a terroir that gives extremely mineral, earthy wines with delicate fruit. Lovely aromas of raspberry, strawberry, rose and earth; the palate is chalky and pure with vibrant berry fruits, with herbal and mineral notes. No extraction or oak aging, just beautiful expression of this classic Chinon terroir. Serve with white meats, fish, charcuterie, mild cheeses, aging of ten to fifteen years will be interesting.  David Lillie

Baudry 2020 Chinon La Croix Boissée

La Croix Boissee is a superb vineyard on thin sandy clay soils over limestone (Middle Turonian calcaire micacé) high on a south-facing slope above Cravant. 20 to 50 year-old vines.  20-day fermentation in tronconic wooden vats, 24 months of aging in 1 to 4 year-old Burgundy barriques, 9 months in cement. Zero SO2 added until a small dosage at assembly, 10 to 20 mg/L, bottled unfiltered.  This is one of the greatest reds of the Loire Valley - at it's best after ten to thirty years of aging, the wine is also quite delicious, though with firm chalky tannins, when young. Unlike other famous wines of the Loire (and elsewhere) there is very gentle extraction and aging is in carefully selected used barrels and concrete, bringing great intensity of flavor but with an intriguing lightness allowing full expression of the limestone/clay soils. "The aromatics convey a sense of ripe purity, with blackcurrant, black cherry and even a touch of black olives, along with a minerally-chalky edge, and even after bottling it retains this divine complexity, with evolving scents of tar, peony, currant and toast. These aromas translate directly onto the palate, combining these same black fruits with a saline energy. It feels taut, textural yet sinewy and linear, before a long and charged finish. It has a silky sense of cohesion, but it is that long grip of tannins and fabulous complexity that tells you this is one for the ages" Wine Doctor

Raffault, Olga 2008 Chinon Les Picasses

The Domaine Olga Raffault Chinon "les Picasses" is one of the most famous wines in the region - a wine that is delicious young but that cellars beautifully for ten to twenty years, even longer in a good vintage. Under the direction of Eric de la Vigerie and Sylvie Raffault, quality here has been maintained, and improved, with the adoption of organic farming. The vines averaged about 40 years-old in 2008, a vintage that was cool much of the summer but after a sunny and warm September the grapes were harvested on October 10th with beautiful maturity and concentration, combined with the firm acidity found in this vintage. The wine shows a slightly mature red/black color with aromas of ripe blackberry, strawberry and prune with, orange rind, earth and musk. The palate is supple and deep with ripe blackberry liqueur and hints of pepper, cocoa, licorice, earth and minerals. The finish is long and sappy with firm acidity. This great Chinon in mid-life cries out for a nice steak, coq au vin  or pork ribs. Drink now after decanting or cellar for ten  more years. (2020 review)

Texier 2016 CdR St. Julien en St. Alban Domaine Pergaud Vieille Serine

100% Syrah/Serine. From 70+ year-old vines of an old, pre-clonal variety of Syrah known as "Serine" planted on a south-facing slope on granite soils in St-Julien-en-St-Alban, organically farmed and harvested by hand. The vinification and aging are identical to Texier's Brézème Serine bottling and thus purely expressive of the much warmer, sunnier microclimate and granite-rich St. Julien terroir: whole-cluster fermentation with indigneous yeasts and no sulfur in wooden vats with an 8-10-day maceration; no extraction technqiues, only a submerged cap for a gentle infusion of color and flavor; aging in foudres for 36-48 months on the fine lees without racking; bottling without fining or filtration and generally no sulfur.

Texier 2016 Brézème Domaine Pergaud Vieille Serine

Made primarily from 80 to 90 year-old vines of Serine, grown in a small hillside parcel of limestone marl soil in Brézème, generally regarded as an old version of Syrah (which evolved from Mondeuse Blanc and Dureza) with smaller berries which survived through massale selection, principally in Cote Rotie.  Serine gives a more aromatic and elegant wine that the larger berried modern Syrah.  "Probably the last "classic" vintage of my life" says Éric "old school, harvested in October, classic balance but gentler than 2013, so very approachable. One of my personal favorite Brézème Pergaud, unmistakably Brézème. No sulfur." The wine shows a dark garnet/black color with subtle, elegant aromas, floral, then gamey, then dense high-toned blackberry, a bt of blueberry with stone and spice. The palate is lean and youthful with firm acidity, dense but weightless. Elegant red fruits need time to emerge. The finish is long , all minerals and saline acids. Approachable, perhaps, but I would put this away for 5 to 8 years then drink until 2042.  David Lillie

Desvignes 2022 Morgon Javernieres "Aux Pierres"

2022 Desvignes  "Aux Pierres" - 2020 was the first vintage from this new parcel in the historic lieu-dit of Javernières at the foot of the famous Côte du Py hill. "Aux Pierres" comes from this 0.57-hectare plot of 90-year-old vines on a steep, east-facing slope. The soils are iron-rich, red clay with schist, pyrite and decomposed volcanic rocks. The wine is aged in 30-hectoliter concrete egg for 10 months. The Desvignes family considers "Aux Pierres" to be a true vin de garde. While we loved the austere elegance and depth of the 2021 "Aux Pierres," it has taken a more "solaire" and generous vintage to bring out the greatness in these old vines and this unique terroir. "Deep, dark red/black color with light rim. Aromas of black cherry/boysenberry liqueur, deep and meaty with violette, earth and dark chocolate. The palate is dense and supple and beautifully ripe with black fruit liqueur backed by firm, fresh acidity and mineral flavors. The finish is long and sapid with red fruits and violets, seamless, sapid and with very elegant silky tannins. The aging potential here is obvious, but the wine is delicious now in it's exuberant youth. Best in 5 to 15 years. A recommended tasting in 2032: 2022 "Aux Pierres" and 2022 Ducroux "Expectatia!" Desvignes 2022 Beaujolais L'Aube a Javernieres

2020 was the first vintage of "L'Aube à Javernières" and the first Desvignes wine to not be 100% cru Morgon, coming from a parcel of 20 to 30-year-old vines in deep clay soils on the edge of Javernières, just below the Cote du Py hill. The grapes are harvested by hand and the winemaking is consistent with most of the Desvignes wines, undergoing semi-carbonic fermentation and aged in concrete with no punchdowns. The 2022 is a fresh and exuberant expression of Gamay with beautiful ripeness, showing red fruit and cool herbs on the nose, backed by earthy acidity that creates wonderful tension and a long finish that makes it a versatile pairing partner. Absolutely delicious and a great value for anyone who loves serious Beaujolais!

Villemade, Herve 2022 Touraine Pinot Noir

Hervé's Pinot Noir is positively delicious in 2022, showing  bit more weight and ripeness than usual in this sunny vintagae.! Crunchy red fruit on the nose, red apple skins and bing cherries, with lush plum and cherry fruit on the palate with a touch of spice and herbaceous notes. It's very "calcaire" and quite lush in this vintage, and there is a really lovely, mature Pinot character that is hiding behind the bright fruit and terroir. Though refreshing and charming now, it should develop some more weight and elegance with 1-3 years in bottle.

The palate is lush, lively and bright, with nice density and length showing ripe, sappy red fruits, earth and mineral flavors that continue in the refreshing finish. This is a very pretty and versatile wine that will accompany charcuterie, chicken and pork dishes and mild cheeses. Serve cool and enjoy!

Le Briseau (Nathalie Gaubicher Heredia) NV Vin de France 'Mama Mouchi'

"Quelle bête est-ce là?" - You can discuss amongst yourselves about the beast on the label. It seems to us like a cat on a sheep, but we don't know what to call it. What we do know is that Nathalie and the team at Le Briseau have bottled up a charming Pineau D'Aunis! From young vines in the Jasnières region, this is a new offering from Le Briseau, and one that we're very excited about. Lithe, herbaceous, with textbook notes of white pepper and crushed wild berries. A French retailer suggests that this is the perfect wine to drink while you wait for your bottles of 'Patapon' to mature. We'd have to agree, as this is clearly a wine for the moment, not the cellar. Drink with a light chill. Bottled without any added sulfites, but totally 'clean' (the one we tried was open for several hours and stayed delicious!).  -EL
