Busch, Clemens 2022 Mosel Vom Blauen Schiefer Riesling Trocken

From blue slate parcels on the Marienburg, The sister wine to the Vom Roten & Grauen Shiefer is always more linear, stony and drier tasting. " The Riesling grapes for this wine grow in our single vineyard site called “Fahrlay”. It is the second wine from this site. Fahrlay is located next to the ferry landing place, within the premium site of Marienburg. It is the only vineyard where blue slate is the dominant soil. This type of slate is much harder than the grey or red slate. The vines have a tough time at first, until their roots have managed to find a way through the cracks of the slate. They dig deep to reach for the water reserves and can supply themselves through this with all the nutrients they need. The grapes get handpicked at the end of October. They get pressed very gently and will then ferment spontaneously in old “Fuder” barrels. In the cool cellar, fermentation often lasts until summer. After around 10 to 11 months in the barrel the wines get bottled." It offers a beautiful nose made of white peach, pear, a hint of earthy spices, wet stone, floral elements, and smoke. The wine proves juicy rather than bone-dry on the palate, with riper flavors.

Falkenstein, Hofgut NV Landwein de Mosel (Pet-Nat) Weissburgunder

This is an ancestral style hazy sparkling Weissburgunder (Pinot Blanc) from the Falkenstein estate in the Mosel. An unexpected surprise this year, and a welcome one. No filtration here, which wins us some lively texture and yeasty flavors. The alcohol is low, and the acid high, making it a great way to reset after a meal, or get things started before one.

Immich-Batterieberg 2022 Mosel Steffensberg Riesling

As per the distributor: " If these wines were classed like Burgundy, this would be a 1er Cru for the estate. Steffensberg is located on a side valley of Enkirch, composed of deeper, softer soils dominated by copper-tinted red slate. Spicy, fragrant wines are made here from extremely old, pre-phylloxera vines on their original rootstock, hand-harvested and aged in barrel." Steffensberg Riesling is a powerful yet elegant white wine from one of the steepest and most storied vineyards in the Mosel.  A wine with an unprecedented structure that stands out as a companion to rich dishes with it's balanced interplay of sugar and acid, Mosel minerality and fruity/spicy notes. Gunderloch 2021 Rheinhessen Nierstein Pettenthal Riesling GG

Pettenthal is one of the three Grand Crus from the Roter Hang region along the Rhine in the Rheinhessen south of Mainz. The coolest and steepest Grosse Lage, the 2021 is already showing hints of petrol with it's cool mineral, herbacous, flinty frame underscored by great freshness and zesty spices from the red slate soils. Layered, dense and powerful, one could drink now but it would  definitely benefit from several years cellaring. A true stunner! GH

Gunderloch 2022 Rheinhessen Nierstein Hipping Riesling GG

Niersteiner Hipping is Gunderloch’s smallest grand cru, sourced from an extremely steep portion of the vineyard. Spontaneously fermented, barrel-aged, and picked at punishingly low yields. The nose is typical Roter Hang: herbal, stony, savory, sunny, but ups the ante in 2022 with exotic florals like lilacs and jasmine tea. It is intense and really exciting! Considering that Hipping's other primo producer is Keller at $500 a pop, this new arrival is worth stocking up on !!!! Giselle Hamburg

Materne & Schmitt Lehmener 2019 Mosel Lehmener Ausoniusstein

The only single vineyard wine our fave Thelma and Louise dynamic duo bottle. An incredible Grosse Lage, of gray and green slate with pockets of rare limestone from a coral reef speckled with fossilized seashells.  Perched high up on a super steep site above the river, it still manages to have a good water supply, necessary for the 100+ year old un-grafted vines. Vinified in steel to a seriously dry 1.4g RS and 6.6g acid (but it feels way higher than that thanks to the wine's innate minerality and very low RS). An incredible, rare wine of penetrating aromatics, terrific nerve and purity.

Disznoko 2013 Tokaji 5 Puttonyos 500ml

Disznóko estate is named after the vineyard of Disznóko, first recorded in 1413. The name Disznóko means "wild boar stone", referring to a large volcanic rock found at the heart of the vineyard or according to some geographers to the shape of the hill where the vineyards are planted. Most of Disznoko's vineyards were picked as First Growths at the 1735 Classification of Tokaj (over 100 years prior to that of Bordeaux!) The 2013 Aszu has hit the sweet spot of perfect balance between its vibrant acidity and delicate sweetness with layer upon layer of complexity. A blend of 75% Furmint, 15% Zéta & 10% Hárslevelu; the late ripening and development of botrytis in 2013 produced intense notes of citrus and white flowers evolving in the glass into stony minerality and  luscious apricot with a satiny texture and long finish. Ethereal yet concentrated and absolutely elegant. Giselle Hamburg

Hermann J. Wiemer 2022 Finger Lakes Riesling Dry

Hermann J. Wiemer saw the great potential of the Finger Lakes to create high-quality cool-climate Riesling as they do in his native Mosel, Germany. The winery was founded in the 1979, one of the first in the region, and continues to be a benchmark for excellent Finger Lakes Riesling. Despite the incredibly challenging weather conditions which can lead to disease-pressure, they are committed to sustainable farming by not using herbicides or insecticides, and reducing their need for fungicides by managing the canopies to increase airflow. The dry Riesling is an excellent example of the great potential of this region for cool-climate varieties.

Sorry, the Following have Already Sold

Lauer, Peter 2022 Ayler Kupp Riesling Trocken #25

From Vom Boden Wines: "Think of this as a dry "Barrel X" - it's the village-level dry wine sourced from two sites (Scheidterberg and Rauberg) that circle around the backside of the village. Historically a bit chilly, these sites are now coming into a glorious place... For 2022 this is cut and clear and vigorous with a pronounced acidity - old-school Saar!"  ///////  From Mosel Fine Wines, Issue #66: "The 2022er Ayler Riesling No. 25 is a dry wine (with 6 g/l of residual sugar) made from fruit picked on the Scheidterberg and Rauberg side hills." Aromas of cool wet rocks and grass, honeydew and limeade, burst from the glass. The palate is juicy yet herbaceous and zesty with more of those green wet notes without being puckeringly dry or crisp. More of a spearmint than wintergreen Wrigleys gum profile. Giselle Hamburg

Koehler-Ruprecht 2021 Pfalz Kallstadter Saumagen Riesling Kabinett Trocken

Named after the shape of the vineyard, (a large sausage in a pig's stomach casing), Saumagen is the estate's calling card. Planted in 1810 on a former limestone quarry from Roman times, Saumagen is famed for it's soils heavy with chalk and individual limestone, producing wines of great concentration. The 21 vintage is elegant and spicy, clocking in at a sprightly 11.5%. A true dry kabinett, delightful! GH

Lardot, Philip 2022 Mosel Landwein Kontakt Ries/MT

An interesting blend of Muller Thurgau and Riesling, unfined and unfiltered with many moons on the lees from.....the Mosel???!!! Yes, as this is the brain child of Finish born, Amsterdam raised Philip Lardot, who after several harvests with Chenin Blanc in the Loire valley, got bit with the Riesling bug after doing a harvest at Ulli Stein in the Mosel and the rest is history. After 5 years of working together where he was supposed to be Ulli's successor, they parted ways so that Philip could make his more uncoventional Mosel wines. All the wines have long skin contact and all the fermentations are natural and Philip does not block malolactic fermentation, which is a bit unique in the Mosel.  While there are certain parcels (for example in Bullay) that always go into these wines, the “Kontakt” wines can also receive random single-vineyard barrels, booster shots of top-level juice that Lardot declassifies. The end result is a fine balancing act of gauziness and clarity, deep minerality and layered herbaceousness! GH

Battenfeld Spanier 2013 Hohen Sulzen Riesling Trocken

Hohen-Sülzen is a wine producing village west of Worms, in Rheinhessen, Germany. It is located on the flat land just north of the Pfalz, with soils of deep limestone and a crumbly chalk toplayer, perfect for mineral laden whites and pinot noirs. As per Olivier Spanier: " The vines must root deep in this porous and water-storing rock to obtain nourishment. Due to the Donnersberg mountain, which intercepts the weather from the west, Hohen Sulzen is in the rain shadow and summers are drier than elsewhere. The water-storing limestone exhibits its virtues and yields wines that are ripe and vibrant. The deeply rooted vines bring out the stone aromas rather than the fruit aromas. This is what interests me: the spectrum of aromas of the stones and the soil found beyond the transient fruit. Dancing minerals. Salty character of origin. This applies to Riesling as well as to Sylvaner, the white wine as well as the red Burgundy. I don’t grow any other grape varieties." Flashing a deep gold exudes juicy apricots, accompanied by delicate herbal aromas and hints of honey due to its age, The palate is redolent with ripe apricots and a blast of chalky minerality and acidity. An absolute steal for a 10 year old Riesling. GH

Germany's 2023 Vinum Wineguide just awarded our newest German producer from the Nahe, Karsten Peter, "Winemaker of the Year". Nikolaihof 2021 Wachau Grüner Veltliner Hefeabzug

Nikolaihof is one of the oldest wine estates in Austria, whose history goes back almost 2000 years to the Roman empire. Germanic monks obtained the estate during the collapse of Rome, and the first written evidence of winemaking comes from 470 A.D. In addition, Nikolaihof has been practicing Bio-dynamics since 1971, making them one of the longest Bio-dynamic practicing wineries in the world. Nikoliahof became Demeter certified Bio-dynamic in 1998. “Hefeabzug” in german means aged on the lees. This is Gruner Veltliner from vineyards with clay-shaly soils with a high content of granite pebbles. The average age of the vines is 45 years. The wine is fermented in open oak tanks without the use of artificial yeast and without temperature control. Aging on fine lees in large old Austrian oak casks of 2000 - 12000 liters. This yields a lower alcohol Gruner with salinity, minerality and a faint spritz like a Muscadet, but with bigger bones and spice. Rich yet fresh with aromas of herbaceousness, whiter flowers and citrus, and flavors of green apple, flint, white pepper  and lemon rind with a persistent, long  finish. Giselle Hamburg

Thalassinos 2020 Crete Liatiko Little Troublemaker

Is it an Orange wine? Is it a Rose? It has 3 hours skin contact and 9 months on the lees in amphora...but from a pale red grape called Liatiko (the main red grape of Crete).  Hence the name given to the winemaker by his neighbors: Little Troublemaker! New young blood Isidoros is shaking things up on the Sitia plateau in Crete above the main Capital of Heraklion up in the mountains. Grown on shale and limestone soils at 800m elevation from ancient 100-200 year old vines, they are hand harvested at dawn to avoid the heat and wild fermented. Unfined and unfiltered. after it's 9 months in amphora, it spends another 10 months in bottle with minimal addition of sulfites. Bodegas Akutain 2021 Rioja Cosecha

The Akutain Cosecha is a lively Rioja that's versatile and balanced. Mostly Tempranillo with some Garnacha, fermentation and aging is in fiberglass tanks. There is no use of wood here and the style is clearly one of shorter maceration/low extraction, to keep the wine  fresh and direct. Though the emphasis is clearly on freshness, there is still a lovely though subtle tannic structure to the wine, and a sense of place and Rioja Alta identity. Serve with a variety of foods, pretty much anything besides red meat (try the Crianza or Reserva wines instead for that!) and don't hesitate to drink with a very light chill or ideally at cellar temp (~55 degrees).

Nanclares 2021 Rias Baixas La Tinaja de Aranzazu

This is a fascinating Albarino from Nanclares, which, as the name suggests, was aged (and fermented) in clay tinaja, otherwise known as amphora. Aging is for 9 months before bottling with minimal SO2. The wine is linear and lean on opening, with lemon and lime rind on the nose. The attack is still a bit sharp (as of tasting in Fall 2023) but the finish is amazing, and our impression is that the wine should come together very nicely after some aging in bottle. Our guess is anywhere from 3-10 years.

Nanclares y Prieto 2021 Pensares

A rare find in the land of Albarino, Silvia and Alberto discovered a small plot of Espadeiro, a red grape that is found almost exclusively near the Atlantic coast near Rias Baixas and is relatively rare further east in Ribeira Sacra or more continental parts of Galicia. A truly local grape, with bright red fruit, naturally low alcohol and bright acidity. The nose is a touch gamey and elegantly perfumed with red fruit and rose water aromas, and the palate shows red and black fruit, intense acidity with a very delicate and well rounded finish. We can't compare this to many 100% Espadeiros as there aren't many out there! Unique and delicious, best with foods that beg for acid-driven reds.

Nanclares y Prieto 2021 O Son Pisadas

O Son Das Pisadas is a unique expression of Mencia from a single parcel in the village of Cambados, nestled in an inlet on the Atlantic ocean. Mencia is rare here, as are red grapes in general, but trust Alberto and Silvia to find an tiny old parcel that was practically forgotten and make magic happen! As the illustration on the label depicts, Silvia and Alberto do the "danza galega" or Galician (Galego) dance on the grapes, with some stem inclusions and the wine is fermented and aged in used oak barrels for under a year before bottling. The "cruncy" descriptor is sometimes one that raises eyebrows ("what do you mean by crunchy??") but it seems apt for this wine, and to me always implies a combination of a certain type of rusticity with bright, vibrant red fruit.

Nuria Renom 2021 'Donna' Pet-Nat (Chardonnay)

This Pet-Nat is made from Chardonnay vines planted in 1984 on shallow clay over limestone. Grapes were destemmed and pressed, with 60% into stainless steel and 40% in neutral oak barrels for partial fermentation before being bottled as a Methode Ancestral ("Pet-Nat"). The wine is kept for 18 months in bottle before release. Nuria made a joke of some kind about Chardonnay, because there is perhaps a level of pride amongst the small producers in Catalunya for the local grapes like Xarel-lo and Macabeu, but in the end the area has a past and while she could tear up the Chardonnay that was planted in the 80s, middle-aged vines of Chardonnay on limestone might be worth keeping. The wine is certainly very tasty, with chalky and dry orchard fruit notes, nice weight in the mid-palate, and plenty of freshness. 11.8% alc.

Nuria Renom 2021 'Macavella' (Macabeu)

An impressive bottling of pure Macabeu from 80 year-old vines on rocky clay soils over limestone bedrock, on the Can Barceló property that Nuria took over in 2021. Grapes are destemmed and see 4 days of maceration on the skins in stainless steel, while the free run juice was fermented in tank without skins and then combined, with the final wine aging in 2 old French oak barrels (yes, only 2 barrels). I had a feeling that Nuria was not trying to make an "orange wine" but was instead utilizing the skins to provide nutrients for the yeast and to give a touch of bitterness and structure to the mouthfeel to balance with the lower acidity and fuller weight of the Macabeu. This was the result in the end, with a lovely medium bodied white that has a touch of fleshy texture and is perfectly suited for Fall and Winter time.

Rodriguez, Luis 2018 Ribeiro Viña de Martin Escolma Blanco

Luis Rodriguez seemingly lives in another realm in Ribeiro. His Escolma wines are not just some of the best wines in Galicia but maybe in Spain as a whole. The Escolma blanco shows incredibly complex aromatics that leap out of the glass of honeysuckle, beeswax, chamomile, fresh cut hay, and mineral. The fruit here never verges on tropical and stays focused and persistent with perfectly tangible concentration. Incredible and highly recommended splurge!

Division 2022 Oregon Béton

This is Division's take on a Loire Valley "bistro wine," comprised of Cab Franc, Gamay, Pinot Noir, Cot and Syrah done in a fresh and supremely drinkable style. There's some dark fruit and hints of spice but it's still light on its feet and does well with a slight chill. It's a versatile pairing wine with ample acidity that will cut through fatty meats but not overpowering on its own, and there's plenty of substance to stand up to flavorful dishes.

Matthiasson 2020 Napa Valley Cabernet Sauvignon

Steve Matthiasson is a dedicated organic farmer and low-intervention winemaker, known not only for his own outstanding wines but for managing many top vineyards in California. This is old-school Napa Cab at its finest - not overdone with new oak, lush but with great energy and always retaining good acidity. The blend in 2020 is 95% Cabernet Sauvignon, 4% Petit Verdot, and 1% Cabernet Franc. At 13.5% abv it's not overly hot, while the dry vintage gave the grapes plenty of concentration and structure. It's an extremely ageworthy Cab that can be enjoyed now especially after a decant and with steak or other red meats.

Dunn 2019 Howell Mountain Cabernet Sauvignon

The Dunn Howell Mountain Cab needs no introduction, and 2019 has been an incredible vintage for this wine. Antonio Galloni from Vinous writes: “The 2019 Cabernet Sauvignon Howell Mountain is outrageously beautiful. A wine of extraordinary purity, the 2019 dazzles right out of the gate. The tannins are nearly silky for a young Howell Mountain Cabernet. Red/purplish fruit, lavender, spice, rose petal and pomegranate all build in this sumptuous, explosive Cabernet Sauvignon. The 2019 is one of the most elegant Cabernets I have tasted here, and that is saying something. What a wine!”
