(Non-Champagne) Sparkling Wines for the Holidays - Part One!

We wondered if it was too soon, but with Christmas right around the corner, it seemed like it was time to start suggesting some sparkling wines for the end of the year. Stay tuned for our favorite Champagne picks. For today's offer, here is a collectiion of our favorite non-Champagne sparkling wines, be they Methode Traditionelle (we can't say "Champenoise" anymore) or Methode Ancestrale (aka Pétillant Naturel) or "Charmat" as in Prosecco and Lambrusco...

Special Mention: Les Capriades, perfect for New Year's Eve! Pascal Potaire and Moses Gadouche of Les Capriades are known as "Les Rois du Pét-Nat" (the Kings of Pét-Nat) in France. Their expertise on the subject makes them a reference for winemakers who want to learn to raise and handle a cuvée of natural bubbly. There are no other pét-nats that will age as well, or that are more balanced and refreshing.

Castellroig NV Penedès Corpinnat Brut Reserva

Castellroig is one of the finest values in sparkling wine and a great example of the wines of Corpinnat: it is farmed organically, harvested by hand, aged at least 18 months on the lees, and fermented with native yeasts. Marcel Sabate and his team have a remarkable understanding of their vineyards and have mapped out every minute shift in terroir on their estate; this fanatical approach to quality shows in the bottle. The focus of this cuvée is Xarel-lo, a favorite among the grapes of the Penedès for its refreshing mineral qualities and notes of mountain herbs. A light-on-its-feet bubbly for everyday occasions. Raventos I Blanc 2021 Conca del Riu Anoia de Nit Reserva Rose

Pepe Raventós stepped outside of the Cava appellation in 2012 to create the Conca del Riu Anoia designation. The de Nit rosé was the first Conca wine and continues to sate and impress us with its lively expression of calcareous soils, rich with marine fossils. This is an incredibly versatile sparkler that has crisp, pretty stone fruit and light raspberry fruit with a gorgeous minerality. Made mostly from white grapes Macabeu and Parellada, with a small percentage of Monastrell, this is a very pale rose, barely pink at all (almost peach-hued). Don't hesitate to place this in any role that a more expensive Champagne might have filled...you won't be disappointed!

Falkenstein, Hofgut NV Landwein de Mosel (Pet-Nat) Weissburgunder

This is an ancestral style hazy sparkling Weissburgunder (Pinot Blanc) from the Falkenstein estate in the Mosel. An unexpected surprise this year, and a welcome one. No filtration here, which wins us some lively texture and yeasty flavors. The alcohol is low, and the acid high, making it a great way to reset after a meal, or get things started before one.

Dangin, Bruno NV Crémant de Bourgogne Blanc de Noirs Extra Brut

What a difference 2 kilometers makes! Bruno Dangin's Crémant de Bourgogne is made from 100% Pinot Noir from organically farmed vines in Molesme, located just beneath the southern border of Champagne's Aube.The limestone rich soils are the same as those of their pricier neighbor to the north.  Boasting a fine bead and soft mousse and aromas of red fruits and autolyse, one would be hard pressed to spot the difference. The palate offers great depth, pure pinot fruit, and a suave, layered, persistent finish. This is a great value in bubbles and will grace the holiday table nicely. John McIlwain

Guillemot-Michel NV Vin de France Le Feu et La Glace

Our friends at Guillemot-Michel lost most of their 2021 harvest to frost, but they were able to buy organic Chardonnay and Gamay from friends to make this rather vivacious sparkling wine Le Feu et La Glace (Fire and Ice). The wine shows a lovely bright pink color and fresh aromas of cherry and raspberry fruit, blood orange and spice. The palate is fresh and bright with a firm bead an sappy red currant and cherry fruit with a hint of sweetness over the refreshing acidity. Quite delicious and perfect for a party, especially with charcuterie and cheeses.

Pinon, François & Julien 2018 Vouvray Brut Non-Dosé

François and Julien Pinon make some of the finest sparkling wines in the Loire Valley. The superb Brut Non-Dosé comes from 45 year-old Chenin Blanc vines on Turonien limestone with topsoils of clay with silex, from four parcels; Les Haut de Terne, Les Hauts de Mortiers, Chopet and Les Planches Favettes. The 2018 was hand-harvested in three passes in order to select the best grapes, with two additional selections - on a "table de tri" and again before the press. Thus the best and ripest grapes are selected, enabling this cuvée with no addition of sugar, as in a Champagne Brut Nature. Aged sur-lies for more than 3 years.  This beautiful wine shows elegant aromas of ripe white and yellow fruits, floral and earthy with almond and bitter lemon. The palate is creamy and dense, round and ripe but with firm underlying acidity, with almond, earth and mineral notes lingering in the long finish. Enjoy it now for its beautiful depth and balance, but peak drinking will be 2032 - 2050. A profound Chamapgne of Chenin! David Lillie

Pinon, François & Julien 2019 Vouvray Brut

This classic dry Chenin is the perfect sparkling wine for Thanksgiving! The Chenin's of Pinon are some of the best in Vouvray due to their impeccable farming, diversity of clay, limestone, and silex soils, and deliberate, albeit low-intervention, cellar work. The Vouvray Brut comes from 45 year-old vines that are hand-harvested during the first pass of the season. It is made in the traditional method with two to three years resting on the lees before disgorgement with a 6 g/l dosage. The 2019 Brut is a delightful wine showing elegant aromas of quince, pear, brioche, citrus and mint, bright and fresh, but with more ripeness and density in this excellent vintage. The palate shows an elegant mousse with superb density and weight, with flavors of white fruits, quince, peach and honey with firm chalky acidity, and finishing with white fruit, almond and mineral notes, quite clean and refreshing. Lovely wine, and capable of long aging. (Please serve in a white wine glass, not a flute, in order to enjoy the complex aromas...)

Jousset, Lise et Bertrand 2022 Vin de France Exile Blanc Petillant

A delightful petillant version of the Exile Blanc, Chenin from Anjou and Colombard from the southwest, naturally delicious! Herbaceous with tree fruit, soaring acidity and juicy citrus, I can't think of a better liquid companion for an exile to a tropical island in the midst of winter! GH

Julia Bernet 2021 Corpinnat "Cuvée U" Brut Nature

Xavi Bernet farms his grandparents' vines and makes an array of delicious, certified organic still wines and sparkling Corpinnat wines in his tiny roadside winery in Penedès, all of which display enormous quality and care. "U" is bone dry, elegant, and refreshing, from 15 to 40-year-old Xarello vines. The wine spends approximately two years on the lees, receiving no dosage and the bare minimum SO2. Bright, mineral, and refreshing! A sleek, mineral stunner with gobs of citrus and chalk, medium bodied with great persistence of mousse and length. Oyster and Caviar PALOOZZA !!!!

Nuria Renom 2021 'Donna' Pet-Nat (Chardonnay)

This Pet-Nat is made from Chardonnay vines planted in 1984 on shallow clay over limestone. Grapes were destemmed and pressed, with 60% into stainless steel and 40% in neutral oak barrels for partial fermentation before being bottled as a Methode Ancestral ("Pet-Nat"). The wine is kept for 18 months in bottle before release. Nuria made a joke of some kind about Chardonnay, because there is perhaps a level of pride amongst the small producers in Catalunya for the local grapes like Xarel-lo and Macabeu, but in the end the area has a past and while she could tear up the Chardonnay that was planted in the 80s, middle-aged vines of Chardonnay on limestone might be worth keeping. The wine is certainly very tasty, with chalky and dry orchard fruit notes, nice weight in the mid-palate, and plenty of freshness. 11.8% alc.

Nuria Renom 2022 'La Maca Beu' Pet-Nat

This is a delightful Ancestral style Pet-Nat of 90% Macabeu and 10% Muscat de Alexandria from two different parcels on limestone near Nuria's winery. Grapes are destemmed and see about one week of maceration with the skins, while the free-run juice was partially fermented without skins. The wine was bottled before fermentation was finished, to develop pressure, and was aged on the lees for 9 months before being disgorged. In the world of winemakers who give a damn about their Pet-Nats, we should welcome Nuria Renom! This is a fine example. A living wine, with a refreshing 10% alc, perfect bubbles, lively acidity, a touch of density on the mid-palate, and a long mineral finish.

Recaredo 2018 "Terrers" Brut Nature Corpinnat Gran Reserva

Certified organic in 2004 and biodynamic in 2010, Recaredo’s unparalleled rigor in the vines and cellar alike result in the most elegant, detailed, and expressive wines. Bone dry and languorous, with bubbles as fine as mineral water and deep, stony minerality to match. Chiseled on the nose and palate, with aromas of lime rind, crunchy green apple, rock salt, and orange blossom. Try this if you love mineral-driven Champagne like Laherte Blanc de Blancs. In 2018, the blend was approximately 50% Xarello, 25% Macabeu, and 25% Perrellada, and disgorgement was after 48 months, a bit shorter than previous releases, giving more freshness and less oxidative notes. Nostalgia for Spanish oysters and delicate young cheeses is activated!

Folias de Baco 2022 Douro Uivo PT Nat Curtido

A delightful skin contact Pet-Nat from Tiago Sampaio at Folias de Baco. All Moscatel Galego, a local Muscat found in the Douro, the wine has lovely floral aromas, with a delicately textured mouthfeel and fine mousse. Aside from some cloudiness to the wine, there is nothing funky about it, and it definitely excels in the refreshment department. Though tasted solo, it should be great with fried foods, salads, and vegetarian fare, though may be too dry to pair with spicy or sweet dishes. This is a perfect sparkler to sit back with as the sun sets.  EL

Orsi Vigneto San Vito 2021 Vino Bianco Frizzante "Sui Lieviti"

LDM Notes: 100% Pignoletto, spontaneous fermentation and aging in concrete tanks. Maceration can vary from hours to days. Aged six months on the lees. A chilled grape must from the same year is then added to the wine before bottling. No disgorgement so you can leave the wine on the lees as long as you like!" This is a supremely drinkable frizzante wine with a pleasing combination of fruit, minerality and some earth - sure to please fans of orange wine but light and refreshing enough to appeal to a wide audience.

Strohmeier NV Steiermark Schilcher Frizzante

"Schilcher" is the name for a local rosé made from Blauer Wildbacher in the districts of western Styria. Always very racy, full of sharp minerality and acidity. This is one of the rarer examples of it made into a sparkling wine, using the traditional method that is the same as Champagne production. Farming is organic, 10 to 12 hours maceration, gentle pressing, spontaneous fermentation in stainless steel tanks. put into bottle unfiltered for a secondary ferment, a small sulfur dose in tank and none at time of disgorgement. Beaufort, Elodie 2018 Vin Mousseux (Cremant Bourg) L'Or de Vix Extra Brut

(Arrives 12/11) The 2018 Elodie Beaufort Crémant is made by Réol Beaufort of Champagne André Beaufort and his wife Elodie from vines about 1/4 mile from the Champagne zone (Aube) on kimmeridjian and oxfordian limestone. 100% Pinot Noir. Zero SO2 is added and the fermentation and prise de mousse are with wild yeasts, aged in old barriques. Disgorged in July of 2023. The nose is rich and complex with hazelnuts and toasted brioche, with hints of green apple. The palate is quite the contrast - chiseled, crisp and focused with soaring acidity and a dry finish that would lend itself nicely to food. A vibrant Champagne by another name, serve with everything from oysters to fried chicken!

Beaufort, Elodie 2018 Vin Mousseux (Cremant Bourg) L'Or de Vix Extra Brut Rosé

Blood orange, raspberries and strawberries waft from the bowl, whilst the palate shows notes of grilled watermelon and surprisingly savory hints of bitter Seville orange underscored by refreshingly vibrant acidity.  An Aperol Spritz like sparkler, perfect for aperitifs, brunch and all manner of charcuterie and tapas..Quite the pick me up!  GH

Les Capriades 2022 VdF Méthode Ancestrale Pet'Sec

A delicious, mineral-driven Pet-Nat from Pascal Potaire, "Les Capriades" is all Chardonnay in the '22 vintage. Touraine's limestone soils are on full display in this bottling. Aromas of crushed seashells and lemon zest will have you craving oysters on cue. The body is crackling with vibrant, tart acidity and a crunchy mineral texture that ushers the citrus notes over to a beautiful sweet note that rounds everything into a powerful finish. A wonderful, complex and delicious wine that we highly recommend.

Guion NV VdF Methode Traditionnelle Rosé "Bête de Benais"

Stéphane has made his first ever methode traditionnelle sparkling rosé (2021 vintage) from Cabernet Franc vines in a new parcel on clay/limestone soils in Benais. We can't say that it's equal to the Marie-Courtin "Indulgence," but it's a delightful wine! The color is a pretty, very pale pink with subtle aromas of raspberry and earth; the palate is refreshing and dry, but not too dry, with a creamy mousse and classic Cabernet Franc berry fruit and mineral flavors that linger in the finish. $15.99! (The label commemorates (?) a monstrous wolf or wolves who attacked hundreds of people around the village of Benais in Bourgueil in 1693, if we believe the folk-tale. Google "La Bête de Benais" for many accounts in French and English)

Barth, Laurent NV (2021) Alsace Extra Brut Petillant Naturel

Mostly Pinot Auxerrois with some Pinot Noir in the mix, this is a methode ancestrale "Pet Nat" from Laurent Barth... a wine we never knew existed since most of it is sold in Europe and Laurent keeps a fair amount at home to share with friends. The wine spends 18 months sur latte (sur lie) before disgorging. A fascinating and singular wine, with a beautiful creamy texture and subtle aromas of red berries, citrus and minerals that continue on the elegant, refreshing palate. This is one of the most delicious Pet Nats of France - rarely available, don't delay!

Brand, Charles & Philippe 2018 Alsace Pet-Nat 'Le Bidule'

A gently sparkling, hazy Pet-Nat from Philippe Brand. Le Bidule is a blend of Pinot Blanc, Pinot Gris, and 10% direct press Pinot Noir. Low alcohol and as the French say, "digeste," in that it has nice texture and goes down quite smoothly. This will be a great Pet-Nat to have on the table during the holidays, as the bubbles are not aggressive yet the wine is still light on its feet and very refreshing and palate cleansing.
