Superb Saint-Emilions from La Grave Figeac; Clos du Joncuas is Back; Les Fouques Provençal Rosés...?

Share

A friend in Bordeaux took us to Chateau La Grave Figeac in Saint-Emilion many years ago - we loved the wines and were able arrange importing for the 2014 - 2016 vintages which were a big hit with our customers due to the superb quality and reasonable prices. We're very happy to have these unique wines back in the store from both the 2018 and 2020 vintages as well as the delicious 2nd wine, Pavillon de la Grave Figeac.

Owners Laurent and Caroline Clauzel converted the estate to organic farming over many years achieving certification in 2012 and Biodynamic certification began in 2021. The estate is beautifully situated at the border of Pomerol, it's neighbors being Cheval Blanc and Figeac in Saint-Emilion and La Conseillante in Pomerol. The wines are balanced, never over-extracted or over-oaked, with very pretty aromas and great terroir expression. Fermentations are with wild yeasts, sulfur use is minimal (only after the malo) and aging is in barrique, amphora and foudre - "what we search for above all is balance and elegance'" says M. Clauzel.

La Grave Figeac paarcels in red

The estate is comprised of three parcels on varied terroirs. The first, at the chateau, is three hectares entirely surrounded by the vines of Cheval Blanc and La Conseillante on stone/sandy soils with "crasse de fer," the vines averaging 60 years-old. (center of map) The second, also 3 hectares, abuts the vines of Figeac on sandier soils, including 1.5 ha of younger vines for the "Pavillon" and 1.5 ha of very old vines, both Merlot and Cabernet Franc (bottom of map). The third parcel is .65 ha of Cabernet Franc sandwiched between Gazin and L'Evangile on limestone rocks over clay with crasse de fer (also found at Pétrus, top of map, in yellow).

These are deeply satisfying Saint-Emilions, sharing the qualities of Pomerol on iron-rich soils. Delicious now, they possesses the balance to bode well for mid-term aging and will pair beautifully with roast lamb, hanger steak, or duck confit, as well as tagines or mushroom risotto. They will please family and friends over the holidays and make excellent gifts!

Clos du Joncuas, Gigondas 2105 - 2022!

The living soils at Clos du Joncuas produce wines of great character, and we are happy to have a new shipment, featuring the 2015, 2016 and 2020 Gigondas, the 2020 Seguret and Vacqueyras and the 2022 Seguret Blanc not to mention their sensational 2022 Gigondas Rosé!

Dany and Carole at Millesime Bio

We have to thank Carol and Dany Chastan for continuing to send us mature (or almost mature) wines at reasonable prices - the 2015 and 2016 Gigondas in today's offer are drinking beautifully of course and both wines will cellar woneerfully for anther 10 years. Organic since 1980, the estate's Gigondas vines are on slopes below the Dentelles de Montmirail, on soils of clay with dolomite and gypsum over the limestone of the Dentelles, and average 40 to 90 years old. Vinifications here are entirely old-school; whole-clusters fermented with wild yeasts in cement and aged in old barrels.

The 2020 Vacqueyras will drink well over the next 15 years and is one of the greatest values of the southern Rhone. And speaking of value, we'd like to feature the Chastan's superb 2022 Seguret Blanc, a fascinating blend of mostly old vine Clairette with Roussanne and Viognier. This complex, distinctive wine will pair beautifull with any full-flavored fish or chicken preparation this winter!

2022 Domaine Les Fouques!?

Year after year, Yves Gros, Christelle and Jacques at the Biodynamic Domaine les Fouques make our favorite Provençal rosés, and every  year we place an order for December arrival to make sure we don't run out of these superb wines! 20 more cases of the Cuvée l'Aubigue and the Cuvée Estelle have just arrived and will be in the store on the 19th - the food pairings with these beautiful wines are endless and they're a joy to sip by themselves as well! Drink them and be happy all winter long...

Most wines are in stock, please allow until Tuesday 12/19 for pick-up or shipping. 10% case/mixed case discount applies.

La Grave Figeac 2020 Saint-Emilion Grand Cru

Château La Grave Figeac converted to organic farming in 2009 under owner/winemaker Laurent Clauzel. Located at the border of Saint-Emilion and Pomerol on sandy clay and gravel soils over the limestone, it's neighbors are Cheval Blanc and Figeac in Saint-Emilion and La Conseillante in Pomerol. The blend here is 65% Merlot and 35% Cabernet Franc with an average vine age of 45 years. The 2020 is a bit more dusty and ethereal than the 2018 but still has some nice punchy fruit and the same herbal lift. This really shined with just a bit of air and is great for drinking now but will evolve nicely over the next ten years.

La Grave Figeac 2020 Saint-Emilion Grand Cru Pavillon de La Grave Figeac

The La Grave Figeac 2020 "Pavillon" is from the estates younger vines in a parcel of sandy clay soils over limestone abutting Chateau Figeac, near the Pomerol border. It's plummy and deep and shows some darker fruit but with youthful energy, still structured but with a velvety texture and smooth tannins. There's some spice at the back end and the finish is long and unctuous. This is a great wine to drink now but could also age another five years with ease.

Clos du Joncuas 2015 Gigondas

(Tasted January 2023: Beautiful nose, gorgeous fruit, a bit softer and richer than the 2016, great finish, delicious!) 80% Grenache with Mourvedre, Cinsault and Syrah, on Triassic clay/limestone soils, always farmed organically. Whole cluster fermentation in vat with 12 months aging in large old barrels. Although we love this beautifully old-fashioned, organic wine in every vintage, Dany and Carole Chastan have made perhaps their best wine ever in 2015! The wine shows deep aromas of blackberry, dark chocolate, prune, garrigue, musk and citrus, quite focused and elegant. The palate is pure, supple and balanced, even at 15% alcohol, with dense blackberry, tart cherry, red currant, spice, earth and minerals, with tart red fruits, minerals and citrus in the very long finish. This is a superb Gigondas that can be enjoyed immensely now with a steak, pork or lamb chops, Morrocan tagines and full-flavored cheeses. Cellar 10 to 15 years for a mature experience. This is a superb wine and a great value - thanks to Carole and Dany for their great farming and traditional winemaking!

Clos du Joncuas 2016 Gigondas

(Tasted January 2023: Lovely nose, perfect balance, great finish, more structured than the 2015, hold a few more years)  80% Grenache with Mourvedre, Cinsault and Syrah, on Triassic clay/limestone soils, always farmed organically. Whole cluster fermentation in vat with 12 months aging in large old barrels. The 2016 is another beautiful Gigondas from the Clos du Joncuas, perhaps with less fat and density than the 2015 but quite elegant and more Burgundian in style. The aromas sing of black cherry liqueur, licorice, black olive and garrigue; the palate is dense and focused with blackberry, cherry, black olive, bitter chocolate and earth with nice sappy length with firm acidity. Drinking well now, decant if possible, or hold for five years, then drink until about 2035.   David Lillie

Clos du Joncuas 2020 Gigondas

Clos du Joncuas, founded in 1920 by Pierre Auguste Chastan, has always farmed with natural methods and has been officially organic since 1980. Currently run by sisters Dany and Carole Chastan, the estate's Gigondas vines are on slopes below the Dentelles de Montmirail on soils of clay with dolomite and gypsum over the limestone of the Dentelles and average 40 to 90 years old. 80% Grenache with Mourvedre, Cinsault and Syrah, whole cluster fermentation in vat with 12 months aging in large old barrels. 2020 is a great vintage at the Clos du Joncuas, a bit brighter  and more elegant than the 2019, with high-toned black fruit, mineral, spice and licorice aromas. The palate is elegant and fresh showing deep supple black fruits with hints of graphite, garrigue and brown spice. A few days after opening, the wine has deepened impressively with pure blackberry, bitter chocolate and licorice aromas, great density on the palate with black fruit liqueur, red currant, earth and anise. A beautiful wine! Drink this over the next 10 to 15 years, it will give elegant early drinking, served a bit cool. David Lillie

Les Fouques 2022 Côtes de Provence La Londe "Cuvée 'Estelle"

(List price $18.99) Domaine les Fouques has been certified Biodynamic (Demeter) for 30 years, and also raises sheep, ducks, chickens and guinea-hens on their old-fashioned mixed-use farm. The La Londe "Cuvee L'Estelle" is their best rosé from old vines of Grenache 49% Cinsault 36% Syrah 11% Rolle 4%. Unlike the majority of Provençal rosés, it is made naturally with wild yeasts, giving a more subtle expression of fruit and terroir. The 2022 is a subtle and beautiful wine showing a very pale salmon  pink color and aromas of peach skin, orange peel, rose, earth and raspberry, very pretty and folral. The palate is elegant and silky with stone and saline mineral flavors beneath very subtle red and yellow fruits, wild strawberry, hints of spice and citrus peel. The high percentage of white grapes brings delicacy and freshness. The finish is refreshing and long with nice density and perfectly balanced at 13% alcohol. This is a lovely rosé of terroir that will drink beautifully over the next three years. Serve with grilled fish, pork and chicken, salade Niçoise, or just sip by itself. David Lillie

La Grave Figeac 2018 Saint-Emilion Grand Cru

Château La Grave Figeac converted to organic farming in 2009 under owner/winemaker Laurent Clauzel. Located at the border of Saint-Emilion and Pomerol on sandy clay and gravel soils over the limestone, it's neighbors are Cheval Blanc and Figeac in Saint-Emilion and La Conseillante in Pomerol. The blend here is 65% Merlot and 35% Cabernet Franc with an average vine age of 45 years. The 2018 is bursting with lush dark cherry and plum fruit, with good ripeness but still composed. There are hints of woody spice and cooling herbs that add to the gorgeous and complex nose. The palate is full and plush with perfectly balanced acidity and firm tannins that softened a bit after an hour or so. On day two it was still going strong, showing good aging potential. If drinking now decant for one hour or hold another 5-10 years.

Les Fouques 2022 Côtes de Provence Cuvée l'Aubigue Rosé

Year after year, Yves Gros, Christelle and Jacques at the Biodynamic Domaine les Fouques make our favorite Provençal rosés. This is what they say about the 2022 Cuvee Aubigue: "Cinsault 62% Grenache 15% Syrah 17% Cabernet Sauvignon 4% Rolle 2%, (alcohol 12.5%) "Very pale pink color with melon nuances. The first aromas are concentrated, evoking ripe yellow fruits such as apricot and peach. After swirling, it's flat peach with white flesh, subtly enhanced by spices of white pepper and ginger. The palate is imposing, well structured, ample; dominated by notes of white peach but also by fresh citrus which reinforces the iodized side of this cuvée and gives it a certain freshness on the finish." We say...  "the palate is round and refreshing with a dense mineral core. Flavors of peach, strawberry, and nectarine coalesce over cool herbal notes akin to licorice. The finish is suave and awash with citrus and stone. A wonderfully versatile wine, this is lovely to sip by itself and will be a seriously delicious pairing with salads, full-flavored fish dishes, chicken and grilled pork all summer and all year...complex, subtle, refreshing and delicious - buy it by the case as we do run out from time to time...
