Cartier 2019 Saint-Emilion Chateau Cartier

The second label to Chateau Fonroque, Chateau Cartier sees none of the estate's Cabernet Franc. The Merlot that goes into this wine comes from under the limestone plateau of St.-Emilion, picked from biodynamically farmed vines on the limestone-clay and silty clay soils of the slopes and bottom-slopes.  All fruit is picked by hand. The wine was fermented naturally and aged in a mixture of 75% barrel and 25% concrete vats. A very impressive partner to Fonroque, mimicking the minerally character that the estate is known for.  The nose delivers scents of dark flowers and rich baked fruit - strawberry, cherry, blueberry. The palate shows deep red and black cherry and plum, with accents of warm cedar and herbs. There is great minerality, which lends the wine a structure of supreme freshness, but a textural softness making the wine quite delicious now. The 2019 vintage was unusually hot in mid-summer so harvest was early - "the result was a rich, harmonious wine with a silky texture. Its classicism makes 2019 one of our best vintages" says the Fonroque/Cartier website.

La Gurgue 2019 Margaux

Claire Villars-Lurton (G & C Lurton of Ferriere, Haut-Bages Liberal and Durfort-Vivens) has dramatically elevated the quality of this unknown Margaux, achieving organic certification in 2016 and Biodynamic certification in 2018.  The 2019 is 54% Cabernet-Sauvignon, 40% Merlot, 6% Petit-Verdot. 12 months ageing: 60% in barrels and 40% in ovoid tanks. The vintage is characterised by the elegance of the tannins, thanks to an exceptional late season where hot days alternated with cool nights. 2019 Château La Gurgue is marked by an exuberant nose of black fruits, the wine is ample with a beautiful finish and a lot of freshness. Perhaps the greatest value in Margaux!

Ferriere 2016 Margaux

"Chateau Ferriere was certified organic in 2015 and biodynamic in 2018.  It is one of the rare Classified Growths to be biodynamic certified, not only in its vineyard, but also in the cellar. Ferriere develops its own wild yeast starter culture, avoids any input during vinification and limits the addition of sulfur to the strict minimum. 20% of the wine is aged in small ovoid concrete vats, developed by the property in 2012, and the biggest part of the ageing takes place in oak barrels. Born of this approach are wines that are more mineral, fresh and vibrant that fully express the terroir, without embellishment nor artifice." - Ferriere website "The 2016 Ferriere is a dense, full-bodied wine that will need a few years in bottle to shed some of its tannins. Old vines imbue the 2016 with a palpable sense of power and resonance that comes through in the wine's dark, somber personality. Blackberry, smoke and gravel are some of the notes that build as the 2016 opens in the glass." - Vinous 2018  The wine is drinking beautifully in 2023, but a decant is advised, or cellar and enjoy until 2040+

Hauts de Smith (Smith Haut-Lafite) 2018 Pessac-Leognan

"Blended at the same time as Chateau Smith Haut Lafitte, Les Hauts de Smith 2018 was crafted and aged with the same care as the estate’s Grand Vin; the entire winemaking process is exactly the same." - From the website of Smith Haut-Lafite. The wine has a bouquet with notes of blackberry, blackcurrant, a hint of chocolate and sweet spices. The palate is medium-bodied with pretty tannins and a supple and elegant finish tinged with graphite. Delicious now and over the next ten years.

Pierre Andre 2020 Châteauneuf-du-Pape

(CSW price $53.99) We consider Domaine Pierre André to be one of the greatest estates in Châteuneuf-du-Pape. Organic since 1980 (one of the first in the AOC) and Biodynamic since 1992. The red is 90% Grenache with Syrah, Mourvèdre, Cinsault, Vaccarèse, Counoise, Muscadin and Picpoul. Some parcels are over 100 years old, with the average vine age around 65 years. Tasted with Jacqueline in January, the wine was quite remarkable, showing a relatively light red/garnet color with lovely aromas of tart cherry, red currant, rose and violet. The plate was supple, not heavy, with complex red fruits, earth and minerals with silky fresh tannins, finishing with terrific length of red currant and berries. "Un gourmandise" said Jacqueline and we couldn't agree more - but obviously built to age as well. David Lillie  (CSW Price $53.99)

Texier 2020 Châteauneuf-du-Pape Vieilles Vignes

The 2020 Texier CDP Vieilles Vignes is 100% Grenache from 80+ year-old vines on alluvial gravel of glacial origin called ‘galets roulés’ on the northern slopes of "la Crau." The wine shows a bright red/black color and astonishing aromas of violet, red currant and crushed raspberry over deep plum liqueur, just beautiful. The palate is lush and supple with bright acidity, with gorgeous round red and black fruits that coat the mouth and linger on the long finish with firm acidity, citrus, earth and mineral notes under the exuberant fruit. On day two, more typical notes of garrigue and black cherry emerge... Like a great red Burgundy made with Grenache, pair it with an elegant cuisine (or drink it for breakfast). Long term aging is certainly possible, but we recommend drinking it now, without restraint... DL  "2020 Chateauneuf rouge : reminds me of 2000. In one word : balance. Between fruit and structure, acidity and roundness, aromatic expression and aging potential. This wine pleases me a lot. Unusual lately... Harvested late September under perfect conditions. Whole cluster of course, 18 months in demi muids. A tiny bit of grenache blanc in it, since we forgot to harvest 2 rows when we did the whites! 1956 bottles and 24 magnums." Eric Texier

Fornacina 2017 Brunello di Montalcino

I've tried to resist the temptation of a potential cliché, but: this made me think of Burgundy, because this is a really elegant Brunello with no sign of heat, beautiful balance – it’s intense, but not at all too rich, with good lift, and a clear sense of place. I’ve tasted Fornacina for about 10 years now, and terroir emerges in the wine; the relatively high altitude (400+ meters), and the high PH of the galestro soil, must play a role in how fresh the wine is. The wine is very fragrant with “frutti di bosco”, or forest fruits (wild strawberry, blackberry, etc), clay and “sotto bosco”, or forest floor – leafy and earthy. After 4+ hours open, it’s showing even better: a very refined wine, aromatic, dynamic, and delicious

Barale 2020 Barbaresco Serraboella

Passofonduto 2022 Sicily Vino Rosato Occhio di Sale

Occhio di Sale is a wine we did not have on our shelves when we first introduced Giuseppe Cipolla's wines, so it was a pleasant surprise to try his lovely Rosato, made primarily from Nero D'Avola grapes with small amounts of Catarratto, Insolia, and Moscato d'Alessandria. As the folks at LDM describe: "80% of the blend consists of direct-press Nero d'Avola, with the other 20% a two-day co-maceration of 15% Nero d'Avola and 5% white grapes. Fermentation is in barrel and fiberglass, then blended to age in stainless steel. So unique." We couldn't agree more about how unique the wine is! It's probably the wine I most want to try again as there was a delicacy and density that left me intensely curious. The fruit is faint, more hibiscus or rose water than any red fruit note you might expect from the Nero d'Avola. The aforementioned density was in the mid-palate, giving the wine a lovely length and reminding more of a white wine than a red. -EL

Monterosso 2020 Etna Rosato Volcano

Monterosso is named for the reddish Etna soils of sand and pumice in which their vines are grown. The Volcano Rosato is produced using 100% Nerello Mascalese, sourced from vineyards that Monterosso either manages or knows are being farmed with organic practices. In the glass, it shows an elegant shade of rose gold. The nose is redolent of cherry, wild raspberry, white and red flower aromas, with a lean accent of green herbs. The palate is more assertive, with cherry, cranberry fruit, and laced with iron minerality.

Mongioia 2016 Moscato d'Asti Crivella

Crivella is made with fruit from Riccardo Bianco’s oldest vines, including some planted in the mid 1800s by Riccardo’s great-great-something grandfather; such old vines are extremely rare, and while they produce very little fruit, it’s impossible for Riccardo to even think about replacing them. At a tasting in the shop a customer said, “Like Sauternes with bubbles!” which was a lovely way to describe the wine and its rich and unctuous character. made lively with fizz, and crisp with balancing acidity. A great match with cheese or not-so-sweet desserts, like panetone, or fruit pies. While there’s no botrytis, Crivella is much more complex and detailed than all but the very best Sauternes. I’ve certainly never tasted anything like it — a stunning wine.  Jamie Wolff

Materne & Schmitt Lehmener 2019 Mosel Lehmener Ausoniusstein

The only single vineyard wine our fave Thelma and Louise dynamic duo bottle. An incredible Grosse Lage, of gray and green slate with pockets of rare limestone from a coral reef speckled with fossilized seashells.  Perched high up on a super steep site above the river, it still manages to have a good water supply, necessary for the 100+ year old un-grafted vines. Vinified in steel to a seriously dry 1.4g RS and 6.6g acid (but it feels way higher than that thanks to the wine's innate minerality and very low RS). An incredible, rare wine of penetrating aromatics, terrific nerve and purity.

Lapuyade 2019 Jurançon Moelleux Petit Manseng

Clos Marie-Louise/Château Lapuyade is a beautiful biodynamic estate deep in the hills of Jurançon, south of Pau. Their wines are harvested by hand, fermented with wild yeasts and aged in old barrels purchased from Yquem and Haut-Brion. Their 2019 Petit Manseng is a gorgeous wine and a sensational value. The wine needs a bit of air to open up, then shows deep floral honeyed apricot, candied citrus, stone, spice and caramel aromas with sweet fruit on the palate—lemon oil, exotic fruit and brown spice lifted by very  firm acidity. Terrific length. With a few days open, more exotic fruit, pineapple and lychee emerge and the wine softens into something wonderful. An outstanding Jurançon moelleux that will accompany fois gras, patés, cheeses, fruit desserts and is fabulous on its own. (About 70 gr/liter RS)

Lapuyade 2019 Jurançon Cuvée Marie-Louise

Régine and Jean-Joseph Aurisset of Chateau Lapuyade/Clos Marie-Louise produce sensational dry, moelleux and dessert wines from Gros Manseng and Petit Manseng on their Biodynamic estate deep in the hills of Jurançon, southeast of Pau. The soils are primarily "poudingue," a conglomeration of calcareous stones and gravel deposited during the formation of the Pyrenees, with sandy clay topsoil. The Aurissets prefer a very full-bodied style of Jurançon - all their wines are aged in used barriques which gives amazing complexity  and phenomenal richness to the  100% Petit Manseng Cuvée Marie-Louise. This is a superb Jurançon Moelleux, harvested in late December, about 90 grams/liter of residual sugar. Wonderfully complex aromas of apricot, candied citrus, flowers and exotic fruit with a hint of vanillin. Lemon confit, apricot, brown spice and chalky acids on the palate. A young wine that is gorgeous now but perhaps best in five to ten years. With more acidity than Sauternes, this is a great match for foie gras, lemon tarts and strong cheeses, and for apple and mince pies on Thanksgiving! Absolutely superb! (The wine drinks beautifully for weeks, re-corked in the fridge.)

Disznoko 2013 Tokaji 5 Puttonyos 500ml

Disznóko estate is named after the vineyard of Disznóko, first recorded in 1413. The name Disznóko means "wild boar stone", referring to a large volcanic rock found at the heart of the vineyard or according to some geographers to the shape of the hill where the vineyards are planted. Most of Disznoko's vineyards were picked as First Growths at the 1735 Classification of Tokaj (over 100 years prior to that of Bordeaux!) The 2013 Aszu has hit the sweet spot of perfect balance between its vibrant acidity and delicate sweetness with layer upon layer of complexity. A blend of 75% Furmint, 15% Zéta & 10% Hárslevelu; the late ripening and development of botrytis in 2013 produced intense notes of citrus and white flowers evolving in the glass into stony minerality and  luscious apricot with a satiny texture and long finish. Ethereal yet concentrated and absolutely elegant. Giselle Hamburg

Forthave Spirits Amaro Marseille 750ml

The Forthave Marseille Amaro is truly unique affair. Based on a medieval recipe of four thieves who, as the story goes, traded their secret concoction for clemency. It is at once soft and assertive. Eucalyptus, mint, cinnamon, dried lemon peel, dried tea leaves, and honey dominate the nose, while the palate further reveals star anise, lemon extract, a touch of vanilla, and cloves. Marseille uses raw honey as a sweetener, and similar to something like Amaro dell'Erborista by Varnelli, it gives it a wonderful, soft and lush texture. Perfect as an after dinner digestif. Cappellano Barolo Chinato (2017 vintage)

Text from Rosenthal Wine Merchants:  "Few people are aware that it was Augusto's ancestor Giuseppe, a doctor by trade, who invented the incredible elixir known as Barolo Chinato. The recipe remains unchanged to this day: a mix of Barolo wine from a single vintage with a decoction of several dozen spices and herbs, the details of which are top-secret and known only to Augusto. When Cappellano's Chinato took off decades ago, Augusto's predecessors used fake names and many different sources so that the ingredient list would remain secret; Augusto to this day uses the same enormous mortar and pestle used by Giuseppe to crush the spices, and consults the very sheet of written instructions Giuseppe drafted in the late 1800s."

Sorry, the Following have Already Sold

Fonplegade 2017 Saint-Emilion

This over-achieving but little known Saint-Emilion is situated southwest of the town of Saint-Emilion, just below Ch. Magdelaine, on the steep slope of limestone with clay and sandy soils that descends from the plateau. The vines are partly in a natural amphitheatre, facing south with great sun exposure and protection from north winds. The estate was purchased from the Moueix family in 2004 by Denise and Stephen Adams and is now certified organic and Biodynamic. The blend is roughly 95% merlot and 5% Cabernet Franc, aging is 50% in new barrels, 30% in one year-old barrels and 20% in concrete egg and anfora. This complex and elegant Bordeaux will be perfect with fall and winter meals, and it would be a great hoilday gift as well. "It has a beautiful nose, very pure and bright, showing limestone freshness with taut, tense, black-cherry fruit. The palate shows a minerally, defined, taut fruit expression, with black cherry stone, black plum and damson, wrapped in a keen texture and underpinned by nicely grained tannins. Fresh, reserved, very structured, with ripeness but also tense elegance. Pure, cool and very long. Well done." The Wine Doctor

Petit Corbin Despagne 2016 Saint-Emilion

Grand Corbin Despagne was particularly successful in 2016 and this serious 2nd label is a terrific value in a rather dense and complex Saint-Emilion that is drinking beautifully now. The estate has been certified organic since 2013 and no herbicides have ever been used. Located on the border with Pomerol, the soils are sandy clay rich in iron giving a unique full body and mineral character to the wines. Petit Corbin is normally 70% Merlot and 30% Cabernet Franc, and it tends to take fruit from the younger vines, aged between ten and twenty years, and the élevage features 50% two-year old barrels and 50% remains in cuve. The wine shows floral hints and dark cherry/blackberry fruit,  and a supple palate that is charming and elegant with a fresh and not too tannic finish. Perfect for a dinner party this fall and winter, at an affordable price.

Chateau Grand Corbin Despagne has been certified organic since 2013. The blend is 75% Merlot, 24% Cabernet Franc and 1% Cabernet Sauvignon. 2019 is the 208th vintage by the Despagne family at Grand Corbin!  "The 2019 Grand Corbin Despagne turned out beautifully. Readers will find a big, statuesque Saint-Émilion built on vertical energy. Black cherry, plum, graphite, spice, licorice and gravel lend nuance to this explosive, potent Saint-Émilion. Gravel, scorched earth, tobacco and incense lend gravitas on the substantial finish. This is an especially powerful, earthy Saint-Émilion. Quite simply, the 2019 is a flat out stunner. " Vinous

Bellegrave 2010 Pomerol

The 2010 Château Bellegrave is something serious. Not an outright meaty wine, it's savory in more of an alluring, herbaceous, mint-and-tobacco way. An hour open reveals a nose of red fruit, flavors of dark minerals and plum, and a bracing structure of lean edges and good acidity. The crucial stuffing, the attractive, semi-plump middle, forms after three hours or so of air. At this point, the wine's aromas and flavors have expanded, too. Dashes of extra-dark cocoa and dried cherries hum under more pungent and lasting aromas of black pepper, leather and smoke. A subtle, bitter kiss of ground espresso and an even subtler peck of mint give pleasurable nuance to a palate of dates, plum, and red currants. No cellaring needed, drink this today - just open it at 5 if your meal begins at 8. David Hatzopoulos

Mazeyres 2020 Pomerol

Another compelling vintage from Chateau Mazeyres in Pomerol, which converted to organic and biodynamic farming in 2012 under viticultural engineer and oenologist Alain Moueix. A blend of mostly Merlot, with about a quarter Cabernet Franc and just  a tiny amount of Petit Verdot planted on clay soils, with some plots having additional layers of sand and gravel. Hand-harvested, fermented in steel and concrete, aged in wood for 14 months. The wine is really outstanding in 2020. On the nose, there are deep black and red fruits, hints of spice, blood orange, rose, earth and rich woodsy aromas. On the palate, the texture is warm and generous, quite dense with bold plum and black cherry, with accents of herbs and mint. This very young wine is delicious now, with a long decant, but will be best after ten to twenty years in the cellar. From the estate's website: "Gravel soils endow this Mazeyres wine with smoky aromas and a chiselled, mineral texture. Clay brings undergrowth notes and a rounded, fleshy struc-ture. Biodynamics promotes finesse and freshness. The texture of Château Mazeyres wines consistently offers the velvety touch characteristic of fine Pomerol."

Haut-Bages Liberal 2019 Pauillac

One half of the vineyard of Château Haut-Bages Libéral is located on the historic plateau of Bages (gravelly soil), while the other half directly overlooks the Gironde on a limestone hill. The presence of limestone in the vineyard brings a touch of freshness and minerality to the style of the wine, making it unique within the Pauillac appellation. Since the 2000s, biodiversity has been at the heart of all the viticultural practices at Château Haut-Bages Libéral. The plots are surrounded by hedges and trees of various species, and they are gradually planted in the heart of the vines. The soils are covered by permanent grassing or by seedlings (rye, mustard, clover, broad beans, lupines, etc.). The estate is certified organic since 2019 and Biodynamic since 2021. The 2019 is a gorgeous wine, complex and powerful with a more fresh and mineral character than most "modern" Bordeaux. Decant if drinking now, or cellar and enjoy until 2040+

Bosquet des Papes 2019 Chateauneuf-du-Pape A la Gloire de Mon Grand-Pere

This is a crowd-pleasing big and brawny Chateauneuf-du-Pape made from 70 to 100 year-olld grenache vines. "very dark red, black-hued robe; the bouquet is bold, up front, carries a savoury intensity, a handsome swirl of blackberry and black cherry fruit, discreet floral undertones. The palate shows instant richness, a juicy, fulsome nature, with its sweetness nicely judged. It rolls along well, and finishes with a sympathetic curve, lightly powdered tannins, is a genuine, expressive Châteauneuf with the plump virtues of the Grenache well on display. Its openness will please." Drink until 2045, decanting advised..

Lecci e Brocchi 2018 Chianti Classico Riserva

The Chianti Classico Riserva is graced with the image of il Chiorba (the baldy) – the founder of the Lecci e Brocchi farm. The wine ages for two years in botte (large older wood barrels). It’s very aromatic, with herbs and stone over a core of dark fruit. Structured and showing some ripe tannins, it’s full-bodied but still graceful and vibrant, with a long and juicy finish. An impressieve Riserva, this will continue to develop for years to come. Jamie Wolff

Mocali 2006 Brunello di Montalcino Riserva

At 17 years of age this hits the sweet spot showing both youthful fruit and mature aromas and flavors. The wine is very aromatic, led by blackberry-like fruit balanced by violet and herbal notes; the palate is rich and suave, layered with subtle flavors of fruit and saline minerals. This is a real treat! Jamie Wolff

Barale 2018 Barolo di Barolo

Called “Barolo di Barolo” because the fruit comes from vineyards in the town of Barolo, this is labeling that we’re seeing more of these days. The wine shows some of the best aspects of the good 2018s – lovely light weight, savory and easy drinking, with entrancing citrus, rose, and earthy notes. A wine more on the side of finesse than power, it’s nonetheless complete. It will drink very well now and for the next 10+ years. Jamie Wolff

Trediberri 2019 Barolo Berri

This is a deal, plain and simple. It's my kind of wine - balanced, layered and nuanced, the elements in tension - it will repay time in the cellar, but recently proved to be quite delicious with a long decant. Exciting stuff! Jamie Wolff

Gerbais, Pierre NV Champagne Extra-Brut Grains des Celles

A blend of Pinot Noir (50%), Chardonnay (25%), and Pinot Blanc (25%) from organically farmed vines grown in Kimmeridgian soils in Celles-Sur-Ource in the Aube. Initial fermentation is with indigenous yeast in tank, and the wine spends 30 months on the lees before disgorgement. There's a lot of character to this well-priced  Champagne that makes for a fine aperitif, as well as having the stuffing to enjoy with roasted fish, chicken, or strong cheeses.3/gl dosage. Laval, Georges NV (2020 Base) Champagne Cumières 1er Cru Brut Nature

Vincent Laval's wines are simply outstanding. Located in the warm village of Cumières in the southern Montagne de Reims, this Domaine is so tiny that, without a tip-off, you'd never know it existed. The Lavals have been farming organically since 1971, making their Domaine one of the longest standing organic Domaines in the region. Their "basic" (though, trust us, there's nothing basic about it) Cumières is generally 50/50 Chardonnay and Pinot Noir. The grapes are harvested very ripe. enabling the wine to find balance without the addition of a dosage. We can't find the words to lavish sufficient praise upon this wine. The bubbles are perfectly fine and creamy, the aromas rich, earthy, and pretty, the palate broad yet chiseled, and the finish mouth-coating and mineral-driven.

Marie-Courtin NV Champagne Extra Brut "Résonance"

For you lovers of bone-dry, acid and mineral driven wine, here is your next bottle of Champagne! Marie-Courtin, a small, biodynamically certified grower in the Cotes des Bars makes Pinot Noir based Champagne (this bottling is 100% Pinot Noir) with no dosage whatsoever. The grapes come from 35-40-year-old vines planted in clay and limestone soil. The wine is raised in stainless steel and everything about it is pure and laser-like. The nose is extremely stony, the palate bracing with citrusy acidity. Find some fresh, white fish such as halibut or trout, drench it in butter, and drink this wine... -msb

Dunn 2019 Howell Mountain Cabernet Sauvignon

The Dunn Howell Mountain Cab needs no introduction, and 2019 has been an incredible vintage for this wine. Antonio Galloni from Vinous writes: “The 2019 Cabernet Sauvignon Howell Mountain is outrageously beautiful. A wine of extraordinary purity, the 2019 dazzles right out of the gate. The tannins are nearly silky for a young Howell Mountain Cabernet. Red/purplish fruit, lavender, spice, rose petal and pomegranate all build in this sumptuous, explosive Cabernet Sauvignon. The 2019 is one of the most elegant Cabernets I have tasted here, and that is saying something. What a wine!”

Matthiasson 2020 Napa Valley Cabernet Sauvignon

Steve Matthiasson is a dedicated organic farmer and low-intervention winemaker, known not only for his own outstanding wines but for managing many top vineyards in California. This is old-school Napa Cab at its finest - not overdone with new oak, lush but with great energy and always retaining good acidity. The blend in 2020 is 95% Cabernet Sauvignon, 4% Petit Verdot, and 1% Cabernet Franc. At 13.5% abv it's not overly hot, while the dry vintage gave the grapes plenty of concentration and structure. It's an extremely ageworthy Cab that can be enjoyed now especially after a decant and with steak or other red meats.

Gravillas 2021 Vin de France A Fleur de Peau

"Our orange wine is a dry macerated Muscat (3 to 4 weeks) which combines the notes of Earl Gray tea, orange blossom and apricot. Perfect with roasted squash or mushrooms accompanied by smoked bacon. Very interesting with an apricot tagine. Also goes well with full-flavored cheeses such as raclette, Mont d’Or, tartiflette," "One of the greatest dry muscats in the world" said Decanter magazine. The high praise is warranted, as it strikes a captivating balance of subtle fruit - think lychee, citrus peel, and pear - with delicate floral aromatics that suggest walking through a breezy meadow in full bloom. Then just when you think you have this wine pinned down you get a rush of chiseled minerality on the palate, a welcome twist that gives it lift and balance while still retaining its airy weightlessness. On the second day there was an added layer of complexity, with some honey and deeper apricot fruit peeking through. The acidity is in perfect balance and even on the third day it was still singing, suggesting some aging potential. While it's not a heavy, powerful orange wine, it's equally compelling as it seems to shift in the glass from sip to sip - definitely a bottle worth contemplating over.

Battenfeld Spanier 2013 Hohen Sulzen Riesling Trocken

Hohen-Sülzen is a wine producing village west of Worms, in Rheinhessen, Germany. It is located on the flat land just north of the Pfalz, with soils of deep limestone and a crumbly chalk toplayer, perfect for mineral laden whites and pinot noirs. As per Olivier Spanier: " The vines must root deep in this porous and water-storing rock to obtain nourishment. Due to the Donnersberg mountain, which intercepts the weather from the west, Hohen Sulzen is in the rain shadow and summers are drier than elsewhere. The water-storing limestone exhibits its virtues and yields wines that are ripe and vibrant. The deeply rooted vines bring out the stone aromas rather than the fruit aromas. This is what interests me: the spectrum of aromas of the stones and the soil found beyond the transient fruit. Dancing minerals. Salty character of origin. This applies to Riesling as well as to Sylvaner, the white wine as well as the red Burgundy. I don’t grow any other grape varieties." Flashing a deep gold exudes juicy apricots, accompanied by delicate herbal aromas and hints of honey due to its age, The palate is redolent with ripe apricots and a blast of chalky minerality and acidity. An absolute steal for a 10 year old Riesling. GH

Forthave Spirits Coffee Liqueur Brown 375ml

This is the newest addition to the Forthave lineup, one of our favorite Brooklyn distilleries in collaboration with Cafe Integral. The "Brown" is an incredibly tasty coffee liqueur made from a single origin Pacamará coffee beans from Northern Nicaragua and raw turbinado sugar. Like all of their spirits, these guys are serious about the ingredients they use and never add anything artificial. The coffee beans are roasted, go through carbonic maceration to bring out those bright, fruity notes, and then cold brewed. This will make the most perfect espresso martini, but also, you're going to want to just drink it straight. Michelle DeWyngaert

Dudognon 10 Year Old Cognac Grande Champagne 'Reserve'

The Dudognon Reserve is one of the best values in Cognac. Made without additives or coloring, it's a pale gold color with subtle citrus and white fruit aromas. The palate is clean and long with tea, earth, citrus and spice. Far superior to the brand-name VS or VSOP blends and really worth trying. John Rankin

Couvreur, Michel 'Pale Single Malt' Single Cask Aged 12 years

The lightest whisky in the Couvreur lineup, and quite possibly my favorite, this is a single malt, single barrel that was aged for 10 years in Fino Sherry casks. Michel allows the spirit to slowly come down in proof through evaporation before bottling for a more concentrated flavor and aroma. On the nose are notes of yellow apple, untoasted grains, pear,  and white flowers. The palate is lovely, well balanced, and finishes with a signature salted nuttiness from the Fino cask that lingers long after each sip. Michelle DeWyngaert

Couvreur, Michel Overaged Malt Whisky over 12 years old

Before he passed away in 2013, Michel Couvreur was undoubtedly one of the most interesting and inventive of independent whiskey bottlers. Along with experimental cask regimes that included everything from ex-Calvados to ex-Jura Vin Jaune barrels, Mr. Couvreur was a specialist of the sherry cask, travelling extensively throughout Andalucia sourcing the very best butts to age his purchased Scotch. The Overaged 12 Year is a perfect example of that, a heavily sherried malt with an approachable price-point. Chewy and viscous on the palate due to its complete lack of filtration, it has notes of raisins, sultana, fruit cake, dried candied fruit, and leather. Perfect for a cold Christmas evening.
