Bodegas Akutain 2004 Rioja Gran Reserva
I love old classic Rioja. There is a stately quality to the wines and particularly to the Gran Reservas. By the time they reach us, they have spent so much time in wood and racked so many times from barrel to barrel that they have been inoculated against any damage that oxygen might cause. Consequently, they can live seemingly forever, becoming endlessly mellower, more harmonious and complex. If you like the sound of this, then please consider buying (then re-buying) the Akutain 2004 Gran Reserva. This is a tremendous example of really traditional Rioja. At the outset it's full of baked strawberry and cherry fruit, accented by the dill and vanilla character of old American oak barrels. But as one sits with it in the glass, it takes on grander dimension, with meaty notes reminiscent of drippings from a roasting pan and more earthy truffly notes as well. The acidity and structure are spectacular, as one would expect from a great vintage such as '04. The general energy of the wine is a marvel and will make a great cellar addition. 6000 bottles made. Bodegas Akutain 2012 Rioja Reserva
Juan Peñagaricano Akutain worked at CVNE and La Rioja Alta before planting his own vineyard in Rioja Alta in 1975. Ever since, he and his son, Jon Peñagaricano, have sought to produce classicly styled Rioja wines at a smaller scale, sourcing grapes from their own plots, which they work without chemicals and harvest by hand. The Reserva is a very classic expression of traditional Rioja, aged for 17 months in mainly American oak and then for a year in bottle before release. This shows the hallmark notes of coconut and spice, with plenty of red and purple fruit. A beautiful fall wine.
López de Heredia 2000 Rioja Gran Reserva Tondonia Rosato
Lopez de Heredia Rosado is a Spanish national treasure. It is the only wine of its kind, having 10 plus years of aging in barrel and bottle. This vintage is great, with notes of cranberry, hazelnut, and citrus with the usual signature of crunchy Lopez acidity. This is the last vintage of rosado until the 2008 vintage. It's time to stock up. cb
Ghostwriter 2013 Santa Cruz County Pinot Noir
This is among my favorite wines to introduce people to the Santa Cruz appellation, and incidentally, to Kenny Likitprakong’s wines. The Pinot Noir is a blend of several vineyards: Upper Block Amaya Ridge, Smith Road, Aptos Creek, and Belle Farms. On the palate, the wine has persisent flavors of black cherry skin and fruit, underscored by black tea and floral notes. The lithe, elegant texture and shimmering acidity is an elegant counterweight to the lifted fruit flavors. Jonas Mendoza
Kalin Cellars 1993 Sonoma County Chardonnay Cuvée LD Stealth
For those not familiar with Kalin Cellars, we should say a few words. Their release timetable is at least a decade behind most wineries. This means that the 1993 Chardonnay has spent 20 years in their cellar achieving maturity – if only more producers had a system like this. The wine certainly shows evolved Chardonnay character with stone, salt, caramel, apple fruit, and a touch of smoke. The wine is rich and full-flavored, absolutely mature, and a rare opportunity. JR
