Three Beautiful 2020 Châteauneuf-du-Papes! And a surprising closeout...

Share

The best of the 2020 Châteauneuf-du-Papes are indeed beautiful wines - lower in alcohol than the 2019s, silky in texture and lighter in body but with wonderful density and length. They have elegance, finesse and beauty but are not lacking in depth and ability to age. If we throw out Rayas, here are three of the absolute best, from Éric Texier, Jacqueline André and Laurent Charvin...and a surprising closeout.

Domaine Pierre André

We're proud to offer the last inventory of Jacqueline André's very beautiful 2020 Châteauneuf-du Pape which has just arrived in NY!  The wines of Domaine Pierre André are among the very finest of the appellation - they possess the focus and soul of the truly great - when superb farming, old vines, terroir and winemaking come together to create works of art that transcend point scores with their purity, elegance and depth.

(Please see the special price below for CSW newsletter subscribers!)

The 2020 Châteauneuf-du-Pape Rouge is an extraordinary wine and offers a fascinating contrast to the dense and powerful 2019. Tasted with Jacqueline in January, the wine was quite remarkable, showing a relatively light red/garnet color with lovely aromas of tart cherry, red currant, rose and violet. The plate was supple, not heavy, with complex red fruits, earth and minerals with silky fresh tannins, finishing with terrific length of red currant and berries. "Un gourmandise" said Jacqueline and we couldn't agree more - but obviously built to age as well.

Jacqueline at the Salon St. Jean (drinkrhone)

The 2020 was recently named one of the world's best Grenache by the Revue du Vin de France*: "Showing harmonious, slightly evolved aromas, the 2020 is a veritable concentration of delicacy thanks to tannins perfectly ripe and fine. A wine all in nuance, very pure in its definition but with a strong internal energy that will reveal itself gradually over time. After a day of aeration, the wine had not weakened, but on the contrary, had gained in length."

(The Price! We apologize for this confusion, but here is the actual CSW price that will appear only on your paid receipt - trust us, it works! 2020 CDP Rouge $53.99, less 10% on a case. 2020 Magnums $107.99, 2019 Magnums $99.99.

Éric Texier

Here is Éric's assessment of his beautiful 2020: "2020 Chateauneuf rouge : reminds me of 2000. In one word : balance. Between fruit and structure, acidity and roundness, aromatic expression and aging potentiel. This wine pleases me a lot. Unusual lately... Harvested late September under perfect conditions. Whole cluster of course, 18 months in demi muids. A tiny bit of grenache blanc in it, since we forgot to harvest 2 rows when we did the whites! 1956 bottles and 24 magnums." Eric Texier

A superb wine - like a great red Burgundy made with Grenache, pair it with an elegant cuisine or drink it for breakfast! Long term aging is certainly possible, but we recommend drinking it now, without restraint! (New very low net price!)

Domaine Charvin

We always love the wonderfully silky and balanced Châteauneufs of Laurent Charvin - his 2020 is just gorgeous, similar in style to the wines of Pierre André and Texier.

Here is John Livingstone-Learmonth on Laurent's 2020, certainly one of the finest wines of the vintage: "dark red; an elegant curve runs across the nose, mulberry, raspberry jelly, laurel, thyme, dried herbs, the fruit very pure. The palate is sensuous, flows well, is articulate, bears Burgundian refinement, velvet tannins, is very stately. There’s a serene, gossamer, real stylish increase in depth, essence, running into a really good finish where the juice circulates freely, is bursting with life, energy, blood-iron, herbal notes, local ID on the aftertaste. This is pure, feathery, with good inner content, good balance, gives great access to its terroir, is STGT wine (Soil To Glass Transfer)" - drinkrhone

Domaine Moulin-Tacussel, a reminder...

A surprising close-out! We've enjoyed the wines of Moulin-Tacusel going back to the early 1990s - the estate produces great examples of traditional CDP with whole-bunch fermentations and aging mostly in concrete vats and old 600-liter barrels. While the domaine is a bit under the radar, the quality has remained reliably  excellent and the 2020 Tradition is an outstanding wine, perhaps more in the style of 2019 than than of the 2020s above, but a wine well worth cellaring for drinking until 2045+. Here is the reliable drinkrhone review:  "dark red; the nose has local density, is broad, broods in its lair, takes in oxtail, a mound of deep plum fruit, a prune aroma, with pine and cedar on board. The palate is charged with oily, profound content, has pockets of freshness, spark, along its trail, generates a rocky, resolute finish. Marks for character here, a good, rather wild ride. It’s very genuine garrigue inspired wine, traditional, STGT Châteauneuf with robust, persistent length, thick menthol on the aftertaste. The tannins require another four years or so – there is no hurry here. From 2025, decanting essential. Drink until 2047-49" DrinkRhone

The wines will be available for pick-up or shipping on Tuesday, 10/31. Net pricing except for Pierre André.

Pierre Andre 2020 Châteauneuf-du-Pape

We consider Domaine Pierre André to be one of the greatest estates in Châteuneuf-du-Pape. Organic since 1980 (one of the first in the AOC) and Biodynamic since 1992. The red is 90% Grenache with Syrah, Mourvèdre, Cinsault, Vaccarèse, Counoise, Muscadin and Picpoul. Some parcels are over 100 years old, with the average vine age around 65 years. David Lillie  (CSW Price $53.99)

Texier 2020 Châteauneuf-du-Pape Vieilles Vignes

(Arrives Monday, 10/30) The 2020 Texier CDP Vieilles Vignes is 100% Grenache from 80+ year-old vines on alluvial gravel of glacial origin called ‘galets roulés’ on the northern slopes of "la Crau." The wine shows a bright red/black color and astonishing aromas of violet, red currant and crushed raspberry over deep plum liqueur, just beautiful. The palate is lush and supple with bright acidity, with gorgeous round red and black fruits that coat the mouth and linger on the long finish with firm acidity, citrus, earth and mineral notes under the exuberant fruit. On day two, more typical notes of garrigue and black cherry emerge... Like a great red Burgundy made with Grenache, pair it with an elegant cuisine (or drink it for breakfast). Long term aging is certainly possible, but we recommend drinking it now, without restraint... DL  "2020 Chateauneuf rouge : reminds me of 2000. In one word : balance. Charvin 2020 Châteauneuf-du-Pape

Judging from the 2020 CDPs that we've tasted, the vintage appears to be one of lovely, pure fruit, elegance and balance, not as "big" as the 2019s but having the ability to drink smoothly as young wines and to age for 20 to 30 years as well. Here is drinkrhone on the Charvin 2020: "dark red; an elegant curve runs across the nose, mulberry, raspberry jelly, laurel, thyme, dried herbs, the fruit very pure. The palate is sensuous, flows well, is articulate, bears Burgundian refinement, velvet tannins, is very stately. Drink from 2025 - 2048/2050."

While the estate is a bit under the radar, the quality has remained reliably  excellent and the 2020 Tradition is a really outstanding wine. It's made from 70% Grenache, 10% Syrah, 10% Mourvèdre, 2-3% Cinsault, 2-4% Counoise, 2-5% Muscardin & Vaccarèse from 9 plots across the appellation, average age about 45 years-old. Pierre Andre 2019 Châteauneuf-du-Pape Magnum (Arrives 10/30)

(CSW price $99.99) The superb 2019 Pierre André CDP Rouge is 90% Grenache with Syrah, Mourvèdre, Cinsault, Vaccarèse, Counoise, Muscadin and Picpoul. Some parcels are over 100 years old, with the average vine age around 65 years. From drinkrhone: "handsome dark red robe; the nose has depth from within, a really inviting aroma of finely sweet plums, with some cedar, gently perfumed notes around them. It’s a very good start. The palate runs with a stately roll of red stone fruits, lovely engagement thanks to its stylish gras, its spherical shape most appealing. The balance is good. This is Châteauneuf of terroir, no make-up added, is a very bonny Grenache-inspired wine, has smoky, tobacco, menthol tones late on. Much harmony here, not sure what else one could demand from it - way to go, Jacqueline!" Drink 2025 - 2050. (CSW price $99.99)
