A private collector who doesn't exactly drink sparkling wine often enough asked us if we would be interested to offer a lineup of several vintages of the famed Ultramarine wines, brainchild of Michael Cruse and considered California's first cult Sparkling wine. So obviously we said yes! We've been fans of the Cruse wines since Valdiguie was a new thing back in the mid-2010s, and have read and heard about the Ultramarine wines, but many of us have never tried them. Occasionally available at restaurants and otherwise solely available through their wine club, this is certainly the only time we've ever had a chance to get a hold of the wines.
The Ultramarine project was started by Michael Cruse with the intention of highlighting exceptional vineyard sites in California and producing single vintage sparkling wines, in the tradition of Champagne and akin to Premier and Grand Cru vintage Champagnes. Early on, Cruse approached Charlie Heintz, the proprietor of the historic and highly regarded Heintz Vineyard, and has worked with some fruit from this vineyard ever since, eventually expanding with Hirsch Vineyard, Michael Mara Vineyard, and Keefer Ranch Vineyard. Winemaking is traditional and careful, with native yeast fermentation for all base wines, and hand riddling and disgorging. With homage to the farmer fizz we all got hooked on decades ago, these are California's grower bubbles, from exceptional sites and terroirs!
