Earlier this week I was nerding out over old newsletters that we sent from Chambers Street Wines from around 2007, and I found a few articles referencing "The Pour," a long running column at the NYT focused on wine, beer and spirits. We had assembled some cases back in 2007 for Eric Asimov at the Times and were sharing the case we put together for him with our customers. The next day, this season's 20 Under $20 was sent to print and I was reminded of how our taste and enthusiasm for wine has intertwined and coincided with Mr. Asimovs throughout the years! Of this season's list, which was published on September 14th, I counted 8 bottles that we had on the shelf - wines that we love and constantly present to our customers for their incredible value and quality. I won't spend much time reminding that many retailers react to the article and stock up on wines that they don't normally carry. We could have done that, and to be completely honest, I considered adding the Filipa Pato 2022 Dinamico red to our list (we stocked the 2021 vintage previously!) and I thought about twisting reality and putting the Brand Weissburgunder on our offer even though Asimov recommended the Riesling! That said, it was nice to see some of our favorite under $20 wines on the list, and we're happy to share them here. If there was another wine in the article that you were hankering for, let us know by emailing us here and we can look into ordering!
Jackpot (Ramilo e filho) 2021 Vinho Regional Lisboa
This is our favorite value red in the store. A medium-full bodied red, with nice blackberry fruit and smooth tannins. A blend of Aragones (Tempranillo) and Castelao, wild yeast fermentation, and farmed sustainably.
Recaredo 2020 Celler Credo Penedès Miranius White Wine
"Lithe like the ‘Miranius’ – a clever fox who ventures into our vineyards and is delighted by the sweet aromas of the grapes. Miranius is intended to express the singularity of the landscapes of the Penedès region. That’s why it’s made using grapes harvested from a selection of Xarel·lo vineyards distributed in three main areas of the territory: Plana del Penedès, Muntanyes de l’Ordal (vineyards at an elevation of 400 metres) and Vall del Bitlles." (quote from Recaredo website) // Made from 100% Xarel-Lo in 2022, the wine shows very good freshness and great balance. Faint aromas of melon and honeydew with some rosemary and sage, the palate underscore these notes with cool minerality and acidity. Lively and vibrant. -GH
Pépière 2022 Muscadet Sèvre et Maine s Lie La Pépie
100% Melon de Bourgogne. Classic Muscadet on granite. The core of the "La Pépie" Sur Lie bottling is the 10-hectare heart of the Pépière estate, which is part of the Clisson cru in the tiny commune of Pépière near the winery; there is also a significant percentage of their cru Château Thébaud fruit, as well as some purchased fruit from a nearby organic farmer friend in the mix. Farming is certified-organic and the harvest by hand. The 2022 "La Pépie" shows a very pale gold color and ripe floral aromas of dried pear, quince, fines herbes, grapefruit and stone. The palate is round and refreshing, a bit softer than usual, with wet stone, pear, tart citrus, almond and mineral flavors. The finish is long and clean with citrus, a hint of anise and saline minerals. This is a round and refreshing Muscadet, with a bit more weight and density due to the warm, dry conditions in 2022 that will be perfect with oysters, grilled fish, roast chicken, Asian foods and mild goat cheeses. Thanks to Gwénaëlle and Rémi for another delicious "Pépie!"
Vaona 2022 Valpolicella Classico
A blend of Corvina, Corvinone, Molinara and Rondinella, from ancient vineyards owned by Cantina Vaona. Fermentation is for 8-10 days fter a crushing follows a fermentation for 8-10 days and aging is in stainless steel. Overall this is a fantastic ANY night of the week wine, great with roasted and grilled meats, anything with an Italian lean, and light enough to take the place of a Pinot Noir or lighter red in a pinch!
Bedrock NV North Coast Shebang Red Wine
55% Zinfandel blended with Carignane, Petite Sirah, Mourvedre, Alicante Bouschet, Grenache, Syrah, Barbera and a touch of whites for aromatics from old vine plantings (up to 100 years old) around Sonoma County, fermented with native yeasts in stainless steel and raised in a nice bit of French oak for a bold, bright-fruited, silky, and satisfying wine that is unbeatable at this price.
Peybonhomme 2021 Blaye Côtes de Bordeaux Le Blanc - Arrives 9/18
This is the twelfth vintage of the Hubert family's "Blanc Bonhomme" - the vines are now 17 years old, certified organic and Biodynamic. The grapes are hand-harvested in the early morning, pressed gently, fermented with native yeasts and the wine is aged partly in new oak, mostly in cement vats. Only about 650 cases are made. In 2020, Le Blanc is 45% Sauvignon Blanc, 45% Semillon, and 10% Colombard, and shows elegant pear, lemon, herbal and dried flower aromas, with pear, citrus and chalky mineral flavors on the palate. At 12.5% alcohol, the 2021 is lighter and brighter than the previous 3 vintages and it really shows the terroir with crisp acidity, lovely white fruit, a hint of dried pineapple, light oak and stony flavors in the finish. Really a lovely, balanced and food-friendly wine - serve with anything from oysters to grilled fish to roast chicken.
Jasci 2020 Montepulciano d'Abruzzo
With tons of earthy fruit aromas, this is very bright and simultaneously rich on the palate Really classic, textbook Montepulciano d’Abruzzo with the great bonus of being lifted and energetic.
Jousset, Lise et Bertrand 2022 Vin de France Exilé Brut Rosé
This lovely Petillant Naturel is made from purchased, organically-grown fruit. It's 100% Gamay from 40 year-old vines on clay/limestone soils and 100% dry, delicate and delicious, with a little extra roundness and density in 2022, showing subtle aromas of raspberry, strawberry, rose and citrus. The palate is light and creamy with subtle red fruits, citrus and mineral flavors that continue in the long, clean finish. Really delightful and very affordable, too - thanks to Lise and Bertrand Jousset!
