Since my position at Chambers Street revolves around logistics, private collections, and storage, you do not hear from me often on the website. However, this weekend when coming across the lot of Littorai wines amongst our newest collection purchase, I felt an overwhelming joy come across myself that I wanted to share. The reputation of Ted and Heidi Lemons’ winery speaks for itself, but for me they were my aha moment in wine. Back years ago, after college I moved out to Edna Valley and became a cellar rat for a winery. Among my duties was fulfilling workorders, i.e. “recipes”, for which I channeled my inner chemist as I mixed and applied the additives. It all seemed normal until a fateful evening with coworkers in which when one brought a bottle of 2005 Littorai Savoy Vineyard Pinot Noir. It was an encounter that birthed my pallet and silenced me for what seemed like hours as I tried to analyze the psychedelic sensations my taste buds were experiencing. Never had I understood the magic and artistic style of non-interventional winemaking what it means to capture the essence of terroir in a bottle.
Now all these years later, whenever a bottle is opened among friends, I still have that same emotion come over me, and in my delight, see the same expressions amongst my peers. Just like in any career, no matter how much you love it, your job can become a tedious chore. Believe it or not, tasting wine can be taxing and tiresome. In so you can struggle to find that passion that has fueled your desire to be a part of this industry. But coming across Littorai wines is one of the reasons that reminds me why I chose this path for my life and reenergizes that of the beauty in this world. - Dave Schwartzberg
I reached out to Ted Lemon and his team for their perspective on these vintages and summed up what they had to say:
"The 2012, 2013 and 2014 vintages at Littorai are a fascinating study in vintage variation due to the subtle difference in weather patterns in California. 2012 was the richest and ripest of the three vintages we are offering and shows in the fuller body, denser tannins and riper fruit they display, all well within the balanced, harmonious style of this avowedly purist house. 2013 is the sleeper vintage of the three. Purity, delicacy, precision, and aromatic complexity are the hallmarks. The 2014s have the raciest acidities of the three vintages, more tannins than 2013 but less than 2012 and between those two vintages in weight. One could say that the 2012s are Pinots for full flavored dishes, the 2013s for fish and the 2014s for everything, which is precisely what we love about Pinot Noir."
Thank you, Ted, Heidi and everyone at Littorai!
