Battenfeld Spanier 2020 Holen Sülzen Riesling
The dynamic husband and wife team of Hans Oilver Spanier and Carolin Gillot is the driving force behind this estate The "secret Sauce" is hidden deep beneath the soil in the southernmost part of the Rheinhessen: limestone. As per Hans Oliver: "The vines must root in this porous and water-storing rock to obtain nourishment. Due to the Donnersberg mountain, which blocks the weather from the west, the Wonnegau is in the rain shadow and summers are drier than elsewhere. The water-storing limestone exhibits its virtues and yields wines that are ripe and vibrant. The deeply rooted vines bring out the stone aromas rather than the fruit aromas." Hohen-Sulzen, a 1er Cru vineyard, has huge diurnal shifts with soils of pure limestone covered with loess producing wines of great freshness, elegance and tension characterized by ripe fruit, fine spice and nuanced acidity. Notes of peach, apricot and yellow plum are followed by dried herbs, light tobacco, laurel and delicate spice of white pepper and mace. The palate is linear with juicy fruit and smoky minerality with a saline, elegant finish. perfect for summer sipping! Giselle Hamburg

Kuhling-Gillot 2019 Rheinhessen Niersteiner Riesling Trocken
When Oliver Spanier of Battenfeld-Spanier married Carolin Gillot of Kühling-Gillot in 2016, it brought together two of Rheinhessen’s leading estates, and created its most glamorous couple. The wines are marketed separately, but he is the winemaker for both.
Kühling-Gillot’s prime holdings are on the Roter Hang (red slope), an iron-rich strip between Nierstein and Nackenheim along the Rhine. As with the wines of their neighbor Gunderloch, the wines from Nierstein's Roter Hang are all steep red slate producing wines with a spicy undercurrent. Much like it's Alsatian counterparts, the Nierstein is an excellent 1er Cru bottling to go with choucroute or bouillabaise! Giselle Hamburg
