Hirsch Vineyards 2013 Sonoma Coast Pinot Noir San Andreas Fault
Hirsch "San Andreas Fault" represents the estate's flagship Pinot Noir, truly embodying the remarkable soil complexity near the namesake fault line that represents the geological boundary between the Pacific and North American tectonic plates. Besides the mouthwatering tart cherry, cranberry, and strawberry flavors, the San Andreas highlight the brightness and structure of the 2013 vintage, with its nervy acidity and elegantly tannic structure. -Jonas Mendoza
Kelley Fox 2017 Willamette Valley Freedom Hill Pinot Blanc
This Pinot Blanc from the Freedom Hill Vineyard is one of the better Pinot Blancs I've tasted coming from the Willamette Valley. Whole-cluster pressed after picking and fermented spontaneously in neutral Burgundy barrels, this wine has a fascinating richness that somehow does not translate into weight. Subtle floral aromatics coalesce into fine citric character on the palate. Serve as an apéritif, with lemon chicken, or moules frites. 324 cases produced. Andrew Farquhar
Kelley Fox 2018 Willamette Valley Freedom Hill Pinot Blanc
I am not often impressed by Pinot Blanc as it can be relatively neutral and typically blended with Auxerrois or other innocuous grapes, but when it's done right, for me, it's all about the texture. This 100% Pinot Blanc from Kelley Fox showcases her incredible attention to detail and desire for balance, bringing forth a rich, silky texture in the wine. The nose is delicate with fresh white flowers, lemon zest and a bit of underripe peach, and the palate has more ripeness to it while still showing plenty of acidity and a lingering mineral undertone. Whole-cluster fermented in neutral oak with complete malolactic conversion adds to its soft, rounded edges. The grapes are all from Freedom Hill Vineyard, which was planted in 1982 on marine sediment, which really shines on a neutral variety like Pinot Blanc. I will happily sit and contemplate this wine on its own, but it would be a lovely companion to anything you might enjoy an understated Chardonnay with. Michelle DeWyngaert
Rhys 2013 Santa Cruz Mountains Chardonnay Horseshoe Vyd
In a little more than ten years, owner Kevin Harvey and winemaker Jim Brinkman have seemed to have cracked the code for making world-class, ageworthy Chardonnay in Santa Cruz. Horseshoe Vineyard lies on a ridge of sedimentary shale and a base of sedimentary rock and volcanic ash. The combination of shallow fractured soils, cooling marine influence, and a warm dry season have produced a Chardonnay worthy of comparison to their Burgundian counterparts. Rich lemon curd and ripe peach flavors deftly weave with briny, saline undertones. The finish is long and persistent. A Chardonnay worthy of a very special occasion. Jonas Mendoza
