I had to miss our visit to Giulia Negri, so special thanks to Gregory Dal Piaz, who has generously shared his notes. I did taste the wines with Giulia in New York, but it was at the end of a long evening at Noreetuh, and I was past note-taking. Nonetheless, I was suitably wowed, and I’m confident that you will be too. Speaking of taking notes: I lack the super-human powers and discipline required to take notes with Nic Oberto in the room. A visit with Nic at Trediberri is to put yourself in the hands of a whirlwind of complex thought and inquiry. It is an invigorating blast; it’s fascinating to try numerous wines in progress, and Nic seems genuinely interested in his guests’ impressions of various blends and treatments, but it’s beyond me to keep up AND put coherent impressions on paper. My advice? Just go along, because the wines are some of the most compelling you will find.
Ask around, and you will hear about Lalu and Philene Isabelle, two of the coolest new kids in Barolo. I met Philene years ago when she was working at Pranzegg; I haven't visited with her in Barolo, but we had a sensational bottle of her Nebbiolo in April, and I think her Chardonnay is one of the best Italian Chards I've tasted. Lalu is so scarce that I haven't even had a chance to try the wine, but I have faith in the importer's judgement (Polaner), and offer it here in part so I can buy a bottle myself.

Negri, Giulia 2020 Langhe Nebbiolo Pian delle Mole
Delicate and fine aromatics. A touch of a balsamic note on the nose is joined by hints of dried green citron peel layered over lurking red berry fruits. Showing, beautifully in the mouth, pairing clear and delicate red fruit flavors with that savory accent from the nose Delicate tannins early on the palate fade gently into the fruit which shows good persistence. Complex, delicate and nuanced, very Giulia Negri. Gregory Dal Piaz, April 2023
Negri, Giulia 2019 Barolo Tartufaia
What a change since we last tried this. The richness is all hidden today and this is a decidedly austere and reticent showing, though more complex than last year. Delicate and heathery at first sniff, then the cherry and light raspberry toned fruit slowly emerges, but not with the pronounced impact of last year. A hint of something herbal and fresh emerges on the nose as this rises and falls on the palate, tannins building and fading, definitely tannins that need air to develop. This will need plenty of time in the bottle, though the brisk notes of limestone and red fruited notes on the finish bode well for the future. This marries the austerity and reticence of the vintage, the high altitude nature of the vineyard and Giulia’s elegant touch perfectly. Gregory Dal Piaz, April 2023
Negri, Giulia 2019 Barolo Serradenari
With 70% of the fruit in Serradenari lost to hail, this is a very stringent selection. As with the La Tartufaia this is more reticent and certainly more austere than it appeared last year, but at the same time remains relatively showy with sour cherry and sweet raspberry fruit framed by gentle floral, seashell and sandy soil accents. Both higher toned, and with more obvious and intense fruit than the La Tartufaia, this is a lovely rendition with real finesse and a sinewy richness. There’s a tarry core here.lending some gentle power with fine grained dusty tannins adding a bit of snap on the finish. Gregory Dal Piaz, April 2023
