Starting on February 1st of 2023, massive wildfires burned farms, vines, homes, wineries and livelihoods across more than 1,000,000 acres of southern and central Chile. This Saturday, we will be raising money to support small farmers in getting back on their feet, cleaning and replanting land, and finding stability in an area of widespread poverty. Regardless of your ability to donate, if you can attend, we highly recommend it for anyone curious about small production Chilean wines, as this will be an inspiring lineup of more than a dozen wines, from grapes such as Pais, Carignan, Cinsault, Moscatel, Corinto (Chasselas...yes Chasselas), Sauvignon Blanc and more. Regardless of your ability to attend, we recommend donating!
Donations will be distributed directly to small farmers through our friend Alice L'Estrange, a winemaker based in Itata. The focus will be wine growers who have not received support via gofundmes or other social media. Many of the small farmers in the Itata, BioBio, and Maule valleys are unknown to the wider wine world, but they tend the land and farm the grapes that make it into the bottles we drink.
For anyone who wants to donate but is unable to attend, please email office@chambersstwines.com and mention Chile Fundraiser in the subject please.
We are including some wines here for purchase, but please note that all wines will be available for delivery or pick up after the tasting, week of 4/24
// Tasting is Saturday 4/22, 4-6pm
Henriquez, Roberto 2021 Itata Valley Rivera del Notro Blanco
A blend of Muscat of Alexandria, Corinto (the Chilean name for Chasselas), and Semillon, this wine comes from vines averaging ninety years in age! Soil types are granitic, which is common through the Bio Bio. Open-top spontaneous fermentation is done in stainless steel tanks, with free run juice fermented separately from pressed juice. Whole berry fermentation is done with no stems. This wine stays three months on the skins. The Muscat produces its classic aromatic fireworks, but this is a much more refined a delicate wine on the palate, with a fine steely structure lain over beautiful, peppery musk character
Maturana 2021 Maule Valley Naranjo (Torontel Skin Contact
From average 80 year-old vines of Torontel in a remote sub-region of the Maule Valley in Chile, this is a light and balanced skin contact wine, aptly called "Naranjo." There are subtle tropical and citrus aromas, with fresh acidity and a mineral backbone.
Gustavo Riffo 2021 Lomas de Llahuen Pipeno (Chile)
A delicious liter of Pais from the Itata Valley in Chile. Vines here are an average of 200 years old and the terroir is on a bedrock of granite. Grapes are destemmed and see about 2 weeks of maceration before the wine ages in stainless steel for about a year before bottling. Pais is known for lively aromatics, some spice notes, fresh acidity, and all of these elements are in play here. It's a perfect light/medium bodied red for a feast. Serve with a light chill with all your end of the year feasts!
Gustavo Martinez 2020 Itata Valley 'Koupin' Carignan
100% Carignan from granitic soils in the Itata Valley. Fermented spontaneously, and aged in old barrels and stainless stee. No filtration, fining, or added sulfites.
