For more than thirty years we have had the great pleasure of working with Jo Landron of the Domaine de la Louvetrie (now simply known as Domaines Landron) and of course enjoying his superb Muscadets on a regular basis. Jo is one of the heroes of Loire Valley viticulture and has been a leader in the resurgence of quality in Muscadet by his example of converting to organic agriculture, hand-harvesting, wild yeast fermentations and terroir specific, single-vineyard bottlings. His great work and engaging personality have been an inspiration to the region and have helped lead the way to the new Cru Communal classifications, finally bringing recognition to the potential of Muscadet. Come taste with one of the nicest people in the world of wine, and if you can't make it to the wine shop on the 29th, here's your chance to stock up on Jo's beautiful organic and Biodynamic wines from your home!

Jo has been working organically in the vineyards since the 1980's and is justly proud of his soils which are rich and teeming with life, bringing needed micro-nutrients to the vine. "In biodynamics," says Jo,"one doesn't fight against the various maladies, one gives the plant the health and energy to defend itself." Landron's wines, vinified by terroir, show clearly the different soils in his vineyards including the different sands, clays and stones in the topsoil as well as the different sub-soils, primarily gneiss and orthogneiss.

2021 Muscadet Sèvre et Maine "Amphibolite" from 35 - 40 year-old vines on a terroir of amphibolite stones - a grey/green metamorphic rock from origins of Gabbro. The grapes are hand-harvested and ferment with wild yeasts with no chaptalizarion, yielding alcohol levels normally between 11 - 12%. "The wine presents elegant aromas mixing white flowers and fresh lemon. The palate has firm acidity with focused white fruits. Underscored by saline minerality, this Muscadet reveals the intimate harmony of grape and terroir bringing a subtle and vibrant energy - it excites the palate like a water made from stone..." (OK a bad translatiion but you get the idea...)

2020 Muscadet Sèvre et Maine "Les Houx" has always been a big favorite at Chambers Street, formerly labeled "Hermine d'Or," now named after the  vineyard which is near the "Fief du Breil" - a great parcel of thin sandy clay soils, rich with silica, quartz and iron, over a bedrock of gneiss and clay.  2020 is another great vintage for "les Houx" - a bit closed when released, the 2020 is beginning to open up and is drinking beautifully, quite elegant, with beautifully minerality. (The pronounciation is a little difficult, you know the French - sounds like "Layzooh")

2020 "La Louvetrie" The vineyards for the Cuvée Domaine (Louvetrie) are situated on a high plateau with varied soils of sandy clay with amphibolite stones or quartz with subsoils mostly of gneiss, certified organic, with Biodynamic methods. This spring bottling received 6 months of sur-lie aging and shows the ripeness and balance of 2020, somewhat in the style of 2015. This is a bit rounder and softer than Jo's other wines, making it both a great aperitif and a perfect accompaniment to many fish and chicken dishes,

Le Fief du Breil

2017 Muscadet Sèvre et Maine "Le Fief du Breil" This is one of the greatest of Muscadet, from a beautiful walled vineyard sloping towards the Sèvre, with clay, sand and quartz stones over a bedrock of orthogneiss. The vines average 40 to 50 years of age, the vineyard is certified organic and biodynamic and gives very low yields. In the dense and well-strctured 2017 vintage the wine was aged 30 months sur-lie. Brilliant as a young wine but perhaps best at 10 to 15 years of age.

The 2020 "Les Houx" is in stock, all other wines arrive Friday 4/21. 10% case discount applies.

Wine Tasting is at Chambers Street Wines, 148 Chambers St., from 4-6pm on Saturday 4/29 - FREE (as always) and open to the public.

Landron, Jo 2017 Muscadet Sèvre et Maine Le Fief du Breil

(Arrives 7/13) Jo Landron's Fief du Breil is from a beautiful walled vineyard sloping towards the Sèvre, with clay, sand and quartz stones over a bedrock of orthogneiss. The vines average 40 to 50 years of age, the vineyard is certified organic and biodynamic and gives very low yields. In the dense and well-strctured 2017 vintage the wine was aged 30 months sur-lie. This beautiful Muscadet needs aeration or decanting, then shows aromas of grapefruit skin, pear, lime-flower, candied citrus and almond. The palate is perfectly balanced and intensely mineral - showing ripe white fruits, almond, anise and stone flavors with firm acidity and pronounced flavors of stone and saline mineral. This is a bit more forward than the granite and gabbro-based based wines - really superb as a young wine served with shellfish, grilled fish and white meats. As usual with great Muscadet it will age beautifully and pair with monkfish, lobster and aged goat cheeses. 2017 is a great vintage for this superb Muscadet - don't miss it!  David Lillie

Landron, Jo 2020 Muscadet Sèvre et Maine La Louvetrie

(Arrives Friday 4/28) The vineyards for the Cuvée Domaine (Louvetrie) are situated on a high plateau with varied soils of sandy clay with amphibolite stones or quartz with subsoils mostly of gneiss, certified organic, with Biodynamic methods. This Spring bottling received 6 months of sur-lie aging and shows the ripeness and balance of 2020, somewhat in the style of 2015. Quite dense with aromas of citrus and white fruits with stone and floral notes. The palate shows pear and stone with citrus and white pepper with firm acidity, quite refreshing. This will accompany shellfish, sushi and mild fish dishes and is full and round enough to enjoy on it's own, or with chicken and other light meals. It's a sensational value!

Landron, Jo 2021 Muscadet Sèvre et Maine Amphibolite

(Arrives Friday 4/28) Amphibolite - a metamorphic stone generally formed from gabbro or basalt, with a high concentration of iron and magnesium, prevalent in the vineyard, over a bedrock of gneiss. The wine from this vineyard is low in alcohol (normally about 11 - 12.5%, the 2021 is at 12%) and high in acidity and mineral salts. Bottled after 4 months sur-lie aging and retaining a bit of CO2 from the fermentation, the Cuvée Amphibolite is refreshing, stimulating and a perfect complement to shellfish and light seafood dishes. In 2021 the wine is lovely, with subtle aromas of ripe citrus confit, almond, pear, granny smith and sea air in Maine; the palate is bone dry and refeshing with stone and white fruits, showing the lighter style for which it is famous. Enjoy over the next few years with some Glidden Point or Wellfleet oysters or any mildly flavored fish, even roast chicken. David Lillie

Landron, Jo 2020 Muscadet Sèvre et Maine Les Houx

Domaine Landron "Les Houx" (formerly known as "Hermine D'Or") is from a great parcel of thin sandy clay soils, rich with silica, quartz and iron, over a bedrock of gneiss and clay, close to the "Fief du Breil."  Kept on the lees for 12 months. The 2020 is quite differe nt from the dense and powerful 2019, being more like the Cuvee Amphibolite in style at only 11.5% alcohol. The wine shows a very pale gold color; with aeration, lovely aromas of anise, almond, citrus and pear emerge, subtle and pretty. The palate is light, silky and crystalline with stone and earth flavors mingling  with white fruits and citrus. Re-tasted in April of 2023, the wine has gained weight and density, showing a beautiful mid-palate of stone and pear with perfect acidity. This is a beautiful lighter style for Les Houx, making it a perfect wine for oysters and grilled fish and a delightfully refeshing aperitif as well. Thank-you Jo Landron!  David Lillie
