Peciña, Hermanos de 2001 Rioja Vendemia Seleccionada 1.5L
Peciña is a truly traditional address. Vendimmia Seleccionada means vineyard selection. When I tasted this limited run wine at the estate in June of 2010, I was floored. The combination of harmony, density, and rich umami flavors knocked me out. A wine for steak or a serious Rioja to cellar. cb
Peciña, Hermanos de 2001 Rioja Gran Reserva 1.5 L
This Reserva is a fine example of what a great vintage Peciña had in 2001, showing aromas and flavors of strawberry, cedar, flowers, and baking spices. There is an almost luxurious quality to the palate with plush fruit, mushroom, soft silky tannins, as well as beautiful acidity and a floral lift to the finish. This Reserva speaks of the singularity quality of Rioja Alta and in particular of Peciña's village, San Vicente, where most of their best holdings are located. Let this bottle breathe for a couple of hours and it will reward you with subtle, precise Rioja spice and perfume.
La Rioja Alta 2001 Rioja Vina Ardanza Reserva Especial 1.5 L (damaged label)
This is only the 3rd vintage that the Ardanza Reserva Especial has been produced in a long history of the La Rioja Alta winery. The other two vintages were 1964 and 1973. That being said, this cuvee lives up to expectations and is a testament to this fantastic vintage. Sweet / tang / strawberry / plum / fruit / savory and umami / full-bodied / well structured with gorgeous velvety tannins and excellent length. As the great wines from Rioja do, this will surely cellar very well. cb
Conterno, Giacomo 2003 Barolo Cascina Francia
There's no '03 Monfortino, so all of the fruit went to the Cascina Francia — and it's a wine that transcends the vintage. When you have a wine that will age for 20+ years, who needs Monfortino? The wine is rich, dark, concentrated, but shows none of the aggressive tannin and tomato-y fruit that's so common in 2003. I think it's a classic in the making — but it needs a lot of time in your cellar. JW
