Under the Radar in Burgundy: The Beautiful Wines of Vincent Rapet in Pernand-Vergelesses!

Share

Since the 2005 vintage we have been happily offering the delicious Burgundies of Vincent Rapet, now joined by his son Robin. Based in Pernand-Vergelesses, Rapet Pere et Fils produces wines in Pernand-Vergelesses, Savigny-les-Beaune, Corton and Chorey-les-Beaune. While the grand crus here are superb - a 1985 Corton tasted in 2011 was in perfect condition, a gloriously complex and profound wine in it's prime - today's email features three very affordable reds from 2020 that are insanely delicious, perfect for current drinking and over the next 3 to 8 years!

"En Bully"

2020 Bourgogne Rouge "En Bully"  The vineyard is tucked away behind the hill of Corton, at an altitude of 350 meters, on the slope facing les Hautes-Côtes in a lieu-dit named "La Grande Corvée de Bully." The soil here is marly limestone with a shallow top-layer. In warm vintages this cool spot produces a fresh and vibrant Pinot, lush and ripe but balanced with lovely refreshing acidity. The 2020 is just delicious, showing a bright red/garnet color and very floral aromas of ripe, crushed berries, rose petal and earth. The palate is lush and beautifully balanced with velvety cherry and raspberry fruit with mineral, earth and citrus notes that linger in the refreshing, sappy finish. Just a delightful red Burgundy - serve a bit cool and enjoy!

Pernand-Vergelesses "Les Belles Files."

2020 Pernand-Vergelesses "Les Belles Filles" "Les Belles Filles" is a northern extension of "Iles des Vergelesses" and "En Carradeux" facing east and situated across from the village of Pernand. The slope is quite steep and erosion is limited by limestone banks. The soil takes on a red colour due to the ferruginous clay present in the ground. The 2020 "Belle Filles" is quite beautiful, beginning with the usual floral tart cherry and raspberry aromas found in this wine; with aeration, the aromas deepen into earthy black cherry with hints of licorice and graphite. The palate shows ripe black cherry and strawberry fruit with earth and quite pronounced mineral flavors,  dense and deep but still light on its feet and balanced with firm acidity. Drink now and over the next five to eight years.

2020 Chorey-les-Beaune Vieilles Vignes "The roots of our old Chorey-les-Beaune-vines reach deep down into an alluvial marly limestone soil on a stony, slightly ferruginous ground, descended from the Côte de Savigny and Aloxe over thousands of years." This is a lovely Burgundy for current drinking, showing deep, lush aromas of cherry and plum with violet, brown spice and earth notes. The palate is round and lush but with great minerality as well with a terrific, long sappy finish.

Rounding out our offer of Rapet's reds are three 1er and Grand Cru wines that belong in your cellar: 2020 Savigny-les-Beaune 1er Cru "Aux Fournaux," 2019 Beaune 1er Cru "Clos du Roi" and the superb 2020 Corton - all are reasonably priced given the outstanding quality!

Sylvette, Vincent, Robin and Louis Rapet

The white wines of Pernand-Vergelesses are unique and distinctive, both because of the terroir of limestone marl with silca and iron and because of the altitude and exposure which bring freshness and a crystalline purity to these very mineral-laden Chardonnays. The 2019 Pernand-Vergelesses 1er Cru "En Caradeux" and the 2019 1er Cru "Sous Fretille" are marvelous wines that will repay 5 to 10 years of cellaring.

Corton-Charlemagne

The Rapets have 2.5 hectares of Corton-Charlemagne in 4 parcels, 3 in Pernand and 1 in Aloxe, with a mix of old and young vines on typically thin stony soils over hard limestone. The 2020 is a lovely combination of delicacy and concentration. Subtle and complex aromas, a palate that is not fat but round and very long with great finishing chalky acidity. This should age beautifully, try to wait 6 to 10 years before drinking....

Rapet, Père et Fils 2020 Pernand-Vergelesses Les Belles Filles

The Pernand-Vergelesses vineyard "Les Belles Filles" is a northern extension of "Iles des Vergelesses" and "En Carradeux" facing east and usually producing an elegant, very pretty light-bodied Burgundy. In 2020, the hot, dry conditions gave this vineyard (and others in Auxey-Duresses for example) their moment in the sun with wines of balance and firm acidities but showing the ripeness of the vintage. The 2020 "Belle Filles" is quite beautiful, beginning with the usual floral tart cherry and raspberry aromas found in this wine; with aeration, the aromas deepen into earthy black cherry with hints of licorice and graphite. The palate shows ripe black cherry and strawberry fruit with earth and mineral flavors, quite dense and deep but still light on its feet and balanced with firm acidity. Three days later, the wine is really singing with terrific depth and length of black fruits and saline minerals. This is a great vintage for "Belles Filles." Decant well in advance if drinking now, best to cellar five to eight years and drink till 2033+. David Lillie

Rapet, Père et Fils 2019 Savigny-les-Beaune 1er Cru "Aux Founaux"

From 50 year-old vines on iron-rich soils over limestone in the upper part of the vineyard with shallow topsoils. "This version of Vincent Rapet’s aux Fournaux bottling is all from the premier cru section of the vineyard. This is the only premier cru the family owns in the village of Savigny, with their Fournaux parcel planted to vines more than fifty years of age. These old vines see just a touch more new wood here, with thirty percent of the casks new and the wine again comes in at 13.5 percent alcohol in this vintage. The wine is a lovely young Savigny, offering up scents of red currants, cherries, a touch of orange peel, gamebird, iron-infused soil tones, a touch of coriander seed, bonfire and cedar. On the palate the wine is bright, full-bodied and shows some nice, old vine creaminess in the core, with good acids and focus, lovely mineral drive, fine-grained tannins and a long, complex and very nicely balanced finish. This is excellent juice." John Gilman View from the Cellar

Rapet, Pere et Fils 2019 Beaune 1er Cru Clos du Roi

Located north of Beaune,  on a gentle slope just off the A-6, this "climat" is characterized by a stony, sandy and very filtering soil. These beautiful grapes, always very precocious and well ripened, provide a fruity and incomparable wine accompanied by very soft tannins. The wine is fine, tender and dense all at the same time, with very expressive aromas of red fruit. (The vineyard is an ancient estate once belonging to the Burgundy dukes, annexed by king Louis XI after the death of Charles le Téméraire.)

Rapet, Vincent 2019 Corton Grand Cru (Jan 20)

The Rapet 2019 Corton is from 50 to 60 year-old vines on iron-rich soils in  Corton Combes, Corton Les Chaumes (stony plateau) and la Voie Rosse.  "It is a full-bodied, elegant and generous wine with an excellent ageing potential combining power and finesse. Young, it displays spicy notes, black currant and kirsch, and then evolves, as it ages, towards aromas of under-growth, truffles and leather." - Domaine Rapet

Rapet, Père et Fils 2019 Pernand-Vergelesses 1er Cru En Caradeux

"The Rapets have been making wine (in Pernand) for more than two centuries and the wines are now very exciting" said Clive Coates in "The Wines of Burgundy." Our yearly tastings with the modest Vincent Rapet are fabulous lessons in un-forced, terroir expressive winemaking. 2019 gave slightly less acid whites than usual, this being a bit riper and softer as a young wine but nicely balanced and showing lovely acid/mineral character. Whites in Pernand often have an ethereal, stony, herbal character overlying the pretty white fruits — in 2019 there's a bit more fat making the wine more immediately accessible.  Really lovely white Burgundy at a reasonable price.

Rapet, Père et Fils 2019 Pernand-Vergelesses 1er Cru Sous Frétille

Rapet Père et Fils is a long time favorite Burgundy of Chambers Street because they combine terroir specificity with value. While the former is somewhat easier to find in Burgundy than the latter these days, we are delighted to present these wines vintage after vintage because the whites are fresh, mineral, and detailed, while the reds are deftly made, transparent, and cellar beautifully. One of my favorite wines of the lineup is the Pernad-Vergelesses 1er cru Sous Frétille. Of the Pernand-Vergelesses whites, it always seems to capture the energy and mineral pungency of the nearby Corton-Charlemagne with less weight and certainly requiring less patience. With similar geology, but not quite as favorable exposure or exposition, Sous Frétille shows some of the cut if not the scale of nearby grand cru.

Rapet, Père et Fils 2020 Corton-Charlemagne Grand Cru

The Rapets have 2.5 hectares of Corton-Charlemagne in 4 parcels, 3 in Pernand and 1 in Aloxe, with a mix of old and young vines on typically thin stony soils over hard limestone. The 2020 is a lovely combination of delicacy and concentration. Subtle and complex aromas, a palate that is not fat but round and very long with great finishing chalky acidity. This should age beautifully, try to wait 6 to 10 years before drinking.... "This grand Sire only reaches his age of maturity after 10 years in the cellar, revealing an aromatic richness of honey and toasted almonds with an exquisite mineral touch. Served at 12°C, the Corton-Charlemagne beautifully accompanies foie gras, lobster,  fine fish, veal sweetbread cassolette, suprêmes de volaille with morels, and mild cheeses."
