"What to say about a vintage ending in 9?

Small quantities but balanced and ripe with nice acidities..."

Domaine des Croix

Aside from the good time we always have, my visit with David Croix was a highlight of my Burgundy trip in May. The Domaine des Croix wines have evolved so much over the last ten years, as David has made trials in the vineyard with biodynamics, increasingly tall hedging and low- and no-till farming while keeping to a strict organic program year after year. In the cellar, the quantity of whole cluster in the reds is consistently between 25% and 100% depending on the cuvee and the total sulfur in the reds has been reduced to less than half of what it was in 2010. If forced to choose one word to describe the wines it would be fresh and in 2020 that doesn't do it justice. Across the range the reds are weightless, with beautiful crisp red and black fruit, whole cluster complexity and great typicity. The Beaune 1er Cru Cent Vignes is a particular standout - it's often pleasurable but can lack stuffing. This 2020 has great structure and will age beautifully, if you can avoid opening it. Historically, there has only been a single white wine, a wonderful Corton-Charlemagne that never manages to be more than three barrels. It's then very exciting to offer the first release of a Saint Romain white, from the great Combe Bazin site. David talked about the somewhat disappointing condition of the vines and has ultimately decided to re-plant, so we were thrilled with this delicious and electric bottling (and looking forward to what it will yield in the years to come).
