Something about mid February winter doldrums always calls for something bracing, juicy, aromatic and soul soothing. I can't think of anything more suited for this period than a slew of German riesling and pinot noir, still and sparkling, to make the heart beat faster and set the mood for a cozy evening in by the fire with Barry White crooning from the speakers and.....you catch my drift. So in honor of our first Arctic Blast winter weekend, and our upcoming "romantic" holiday, please join us for a celebration of German wine.
The still Rieslings hail from the Saar, Rhinegau and Pfalz with sweetness levels of dry and off dry and ripeness levels of feinherb, kabinett and spatlese. The sparkling Riesling Sekt is from the Nahe and the Pinot Noir is from the Rheinhessen , quite a cross section of regions and styles so something for everyone.

Gut Hermannsberg Riesling Sekt will arrive midweek in store.
Biodynamic dry Riesling from the Pfalz just north of the Alsatian border. Like his buddy Claus Preisinger in Austria's Burgenland, Sven Leiner is a proud member of RESPEKT Biodyn and a firm believer that " a species-rich soil ecosystem, including bacteria as well as beneficial fungal mycelia, earthworms and a variety of insects, ensures that an efficient nutrient cycle is in place. A wide array of plant life also cuts down significantly on the use of natural fertilisers." The vineyards are full of chalk and limestone covered in deep Loess which add to aromas of minerality and hints of petrol. Refreshingly juicy flavors of fresh nectarine, lemonade, lime zest, apricot, and crystalline acidity. Pair with any spicy cuisine for your next BBQ or for Superbowl Buffalo chicken wingsl! Stefan's winery in the Saar has won "Best of" accolades for everything in the past 5 years. 2021 was an astonishing vintage with sizzling acidities balancing ripe sugar levels. With vineyards in Niedermenninger and Krettnact, his prized vineyard is this 50 year old parcel of old vines in the south west facing western part of the Niedermenninger Sonnenberg on iron rich red slate soils. The 44 g/l of residual sugar is barely perceptible in this vintage, offering just a finishing kiss with juicy lemon drop, crystalline acidity and crunchy minerality: truly breathtaking like an aerial trapezist flipping effortlessly through the air!! As per the distributor: "Sourced from the single vineyards Jungfer, Schönhell and Würzgarten on grey and dark slate soils, the 2020 Hallgarten Riesling trocken Alte Reben combines the higher location of the vineyards with the 40+-year-old, narrowly planted vines that give a particular coolish micro-climate, according to Peter Bernhard. Vinified in 60% stainless steel and 40% large oak casks, the nose is clear, bright, intense and complex in its sexy purity that combines yellow fruit aromas and uplifting, almost floral and ethereal terroir notes. Medium to full-bodied, this is a crystalline and silky, enormously pure and elegant, salty, vital and frisky Riesling with remarkable finesse and piquancy." Tasted at the winery, the wine displays crisp cool herbaceousness that is high toned, bright and mineral with an ethereal body, elegant and feminine. Giselle Hamburg
Koehler-Ruprecht in the Pfalz makes wines much the same way they did over a century ago: no chemicals in the vineyards, no manipulation in the winery, with very long, slow fermentations in huge, old barrels. The Saumagen is an ultraditional expression of Pfalz dry Riesling: established as a vineyard in 1810, it was an ancient Roman limestone quarry. The Saumagen is the estate’s crown jewel: 4 hectares of chalky marl and limestone in the shape of a saumagen, the specialty sausage of the region! It produces wines that are simultaneously muscular yet graceful, extremely mineral and vibrant. Combine that with the showstopper 2019 vintage and a Spatlese (ripe) trocken (dry) style and you have the hallmark signature of a winter weight Riesling with all the bells and whistles , ready to give heavy hitter GGs (grand crus) from Von Winning and Muller Catoir a run for their money.Peking Duck anyone? Thorle is a 16th century estate in the center of the Rheinehessen, under new ownership of the Thorle brothers since 2006 who have converted the estate to being Certified Organic as of 2022. The estate is comprised of three vineyards on a mix of limestone and clay with loess top soils. All wines are unfiltered, gravity clarified, barrel-aged and bottled with minimal SO2. Their Spatburgunder is serious and dark fruited; spontaneously fermented on the skins for 3-4 weeks with frequent punch downs, aged in french oak for 20 months and bottled unfiltered.
Winemaker Karsten Peter who was just awarded "Winemaker of the Year"by Germany's 2023 Vinum Wineguide, has updated the ageing on their Sekts now to a minimum of 24 months and a lower dosage; in this case to 7gms for the Brut. Finally, an affordable Riesling Sekt showcasing notes of petrol, citrus and white peach with high acid, zesty minerality and a delicate body that makes for a perfect aperitf or pairing for lighter fare. Let the festivities begin! Giselle Hamburg
