The Beautiful 2020s from Domaine Chantal Lescure in Nuits-Saint-Georges - "Terroirs Vivants, Vins Authentiques!"

Share

We are proud to once again offer the superb wines of Domaine Chantal Lescure, an important organic estate based in Nuits-Saint-Georges, proprietors of 18 hectares from Meursault in the Côte de Beaune to Chambolle-Musigny in the Côte de Nuits. Today's offer features the excellent 2020 vintage and happily includes small allocations of the estate's Vosne-Romanee "Les Suchots" and Clos de Vougeot.

Founded in 1975 by Chantal Lescure and Xavier Machard de Gramont, this family domain is now owned by their two sons Aymeric and Thibault and directed by François Chaveriat. Upon Chaveriat's arrival in 1996 the use of herbicides was stopped and the estate has been practicing fully organic methods since 2000, certified since 2006. The estate has a very high percentage of old vines in a superb collection of parcels including .42 hectares in Vosne-Romanee "Les Suchots" and 30 ares in the lieu-dit "Montiotes Hautes" in the upper part of the Clos de Vougeot.

These are true wines of terroir that offer great quality and character throughout the range, due to great work in the vines and "non-interventionist" work in the cellar: twenty years of organic farming; careful hand-harvesting with triage; "encuvage" by gravity; long, slow fermentations with wild yeasts; minimal pigeage; bottling without fining or filtration; slow pneumatic press for the whites at low pressure with zero batonnage seeking terroir rather than fruit.

Another factor in the subtle fruit and terroir expression in these wines is the careful use of sulfur-dioxide, with the reds averaging only about 30 mg/L of total SO2.

François Chaveriat of Chantal Lescure

Of particular note is the sensational quality of the Bourgogne and Côte de Beaune wines from Chantal Lescure which offer great character, beautiful purity of fruit and superb minerality at very reasonable prices. The "Les Verduns," "Grande Chatelaine," and the "Clos des Topes Bizot" Rouge and Blanc are delicious now and will repay cellaring of 5 to 8 years - we recommend them highly!

We hope that all Burgundy lovers will try these delicious wines from living soils and we offer our congratulations to François Chaveriat for his great work at this estate! - David Lillie

Chantal Lescure 2020 Clos de Vougeot Grand Cru

From vines in the upper part of the Clos (Lieu-dit "Montiotes Hautes") Terroir pebbly clay/limestone, 50% of the vines are 70+ years-old, 50% were replanted in 2011. (The exact position is a bit unclear on the Beteta maps, which put the Chantal Lescure vines running across "Dix Journaux" into "Montiotes Hautes" (?)  just below Meo-Camuzet and above Guyon, De Montille and Prieuré-Roch)

Chantal Lescure 2020 Pommard 1er Cru Les Bertins

The Chantal Lescure Pommard 1er Cru "Les Bertins" is from a one hectare parcel of old vines on the Volnay side of Pommard, at the base of the slope in clay over hard  limestone and rocky debris. There is a pre-fermentation maceration followed by a long, slow fermentation with wild yeasts, with aging in 30% new barrels with one soutirage after 18 months. The wine shows a deep red/black color with bright, elegant aromas of blackberry and black cherry, deep and meaty with rose, earth and blood orange. The palate is dense and chalky with round, sappy blackberry and red currant fruit, licorice and minerals, lifted by bright acidity. The finish is long with saline minerals and black fruits lingering on the palate. Decant if drinking now - this very elegant Pommard will benefit from five years of cellaring, then enjoy until 2040. Chantal Lescure 2020 Pommard Les Vignots

The Pommard "Les Vignots" is from south-facing vines situated on the Montagne de Pommard, in a terroir of clay-marl. These 35 year-old vines grow in high elevation, about 330 meters above sea-level. (The name stems from a parcel of vines remaining on this site that survived a desvastating insect attack that destroyed much of the Burgundy vineyard in the 1700s) The grapes are hand harvested and undergo a long fermentation in stainless steel tanks, punched-down and vatted for 18-25 days. The wine ages in a cold cellar on lees in barrels, 30% of which are new. The 2020 is a deep purple/red in the glass with aromas of plum and black cherry with some earth and pepper notes. The palate is big, earthy and nicely textured with dark cherry, plum and black raspberry, full-bodied but balanced with nice acidity. This is certainly a big wine for Burgundy, drinking well now but benefits from some air - it will come together nicely with a few years in the cellar. Jeff DiLorenzo

Chantal Lescure 2020 Vosne-Romanée 1er Cru Les Suchots

Nestled in between Richebourg and Romanée-Saint-Vivant and Echezeaux, Les Suchots is a premier cru break in the line of grands cru that runs from La Tache to Mazis-Chambertin, this is likely due to the small dip in the hillside that makes the climat cooler. But what a premier cru! ("the best terroir for Pinot Noir in the world" says Francois Chaveriat...)This has been deeply compelling since we started importing the wines with the 2017 vintage and the 2020 is no less so. This is a very complete young Suchots, with red and black fruit and great savory complexity. Honestly, descriptors for top Vosne like this are beside the point. It's delicious, undoubtedly noble (if not as regal as some of its neighbors) and will age well for years to come. Just buy one. Sam Ehrlich

Chantal Lescure 2020 Nuits-Saint-Georges Les Damodes

From the village portion of Les Damodes above the 1er Cru on the Vosne side of Nuits St. Georges, at 320 metres, on a slab of hard pink limestone with shallow clay soils. Long-time organic farming, minimal use of SO2. 30% new barrels by Francis Miquel. Chantal-Lescure is a domaine blessed with a range of crus—all farmed organically and with intelligent "non-interventionist" winemaking by François Chaveriat. The 2020 Les Damodes is a dark garnet/black with light rim.  The nose is deep and ripe with boysenberry and red currant. There are some exotic spicebox and blood orange zest aromas that vie with deep soil notes for attention, as well as a whisper of sweet barrel character. The palate is concentrated and round but not extracted with gorgeous earthy red and black fruits, complex  and velvety and nicely balanced with citrus, clove, tobacco, chalky acidity and oak. A young wine, but more forward and immediately enjoyable than the 2019. Best perhaps 2025 to 2040 but just beautiful now so why wait...?

Chantal Lescure 2020 Beaune 1er Cru Les Chouacheux

From a 1.5 hectare parcel of 50+ year-old massale selection vines on clay/limestone soils rich in iron, in this excellent 1er cru vineyard at the foot of the slope in Beaune. The 2020 Beaune Chouacheux is a deep ruby/purple in the glass and shows some ripe black cherry and plum fruit on the nose with hints of brown spice, citrus zest and earth. There is some deep sappy fruit on the palate - black cherry, plum, red currant - backed by firm acidity and the ever-present core of minerality found in the Chantal Lescure wines. If drinking now give it a decant or leave it open for a few hours, or this will age nicely over the next five to ten years. Jeff DiLorenzo

Chantal Lescure 2020 Volnay

The Chantal Lescure Volnay is from 50+ year-old vines on sandy clay soils over limestone. Fermentation is with wild yeasts in cuve inox followed by 18 months in barrel, approximately 30% new, bottled without fining or filtration. In 2020, it's all we could ask of young village wine. It's intensely aromatic, going back and forth between sherbet-y red fruit and violets. It is as silky as can be on the palate and firmly on the seductive side of the Volnay spectrum rather than the foursquare side. Yum. Sam Ehrlich

Chantal Lescure 2020 Meursault

The Chantal Lescure Meursault is from a tiny parcel called "les Pellands" on deep sandy clay soils over limestone just below the 1er Cru "Charmes Dessous."  Balanced acidity and a mineral streak  brings some of the toasty, subtly creamy characteristics into focus. A pale gold in the glass, there are aromas of fresh orchard and citrus fruit with some delicate white flowers and white stones. The palate is surprisingly tensile with  a mineral core, wood tannins and flavors of apples and citrus. It strikes a great balance between freshness and richness, delicious now but with potential to evolve nicely over the next few years. A phenomenal value for Meursault!

Chantal Lescure 2020 Côte de Beaune Clos des Topes Bizot Rouge

From vines planted in 1960,  high on the slope in Beaune just above the 1er Cru L'Ecu, facing east, in a terroir of clay and pebbles over limestone. (The name refers to "toppe" meaning field or fallow land before planting vines, Bizot is a common family name in Burgundy) The grapes from this high elevation vineyard are harvested late and undergo a short pre-fermentation maceration, aging is in two and three year-old barrels. The 2020 shows high-toned aromas of ripe black cherry fruit with rose, black pepper, earth and citrus, quite elegant. The palate is dense and earthy with sappy black cherry - intensely mineral with firm acidity, earth and black fruits that linger in the long finish. This is a quite elegant and "mineral" Burgundy at a very reasonable price, that will benefit from a few hours open or three to five years of cellaring.  David Lillie

Chantal Lescure 2020 Côte de Beaune Clos des Topes Bizot Blanc

"Le Clos des Topes Bizot" is a unique spot, high on the slope in Beaune just above the 1er Cru "L'Ecu," facing east, in a terroir of clay and pebbles over limestone. Harvested by hand into small crates, slow fermentation (4 to 8 months) with wild yeasts, 15 month élevage in barrel without battonage, 10% new.  The  Clos de Topes Bizot is an elegant white Burgundy, reminding me of a good Pernand-Vergelesses, showing lime-flower, pear, herbal, almond and high-toned citrus aromas with a hint of oak. The palate is dense and very mineral with wet stone, white fruit, herbal and citrus flavors with crystalline purity and terrific length. This is a a real Burgundy of terroir at a very reasonable price!

Chantal Lescure 2020 Côte de Beaune "Grande Châtelaine"

About a kilometer or two northwest of the Beaune 1er Crus, La Grande Châtelaine is superb parcel on a cooler south-facing slope with thin soils of clay over limestone. The wine undergoes a long, slow fermentation in used barriques, and is aged sur-lie without battonage for 15 months. Showing a pale gold in the glass, the nose initially reveals aromas of lemon curd, green apples and pears and stony minerality. As it opens and warms up in the glass, honeydew and hints of vanilla come to the fore. Bright acidity,  citrus and minerality dominate the palate with an underpinning of judicious oak notes. Long and lean like a marathoner, the finish goes on for miles. An exquisite seafood wine.

Chantal Lescure 2020 Bourgogne Rouge Les Verduns

The Chantal Lescure Bourgogne Rouge "Les Verduns" is from 45 year-old vines on a soil of "marnes blanches"  in this unusual south-west-facing parcel high on the slope adjacent to Pommard "Les Vignots." Vinification is 100% with whole-clusters giving a firm structure to this very classy Bourgogne Rouge. The 2020 Les Verduns shows elegant high-toned  aromas of earthy Morello cherry and strawberry with dusty chalk and hints of spice, mint and rose petal. The palate is meaty and mineral with saline acidity underlying  strawberry, cherry and red currant liqueur. The finish is long and sappy, dominated by mineral and red currant  flavors that linger on the palate. This is an elegant, well-structured and very satisfying red Burgundy that will benefit from many hours of aeration or cellaring for 5 to 8  years. David Lillie

Chantal Lescure 2020 Bourgogne Passetoutgrains

We love PTG at Chambers Street and the 2020 Lescure is a terrific example. The mostly red fruit is bright and crisp, with a bracing vein of acidity, and there is the tell-tale fresh black-and-white pepper quality that is indicative of Gamay on limestone. Everything one could ask for of the appellation and a great bargain. Sam Ehrlich
