Balthazar, Franck 2010 Cornas Chaillot
Here's a great descpription by our favorite Rhône writer, Livingston-Learmonth: "Thick, Cornasien robe, full. Big, oily, saturated bouquet that has a 1990 richness, gives the image of red meat strength – there is packing here. It is a very complex nose, with violet and polished leather involved as well, has a lot to show. The palate has a black berry drive, has acetate in it as well. It shows savoury, meat gravy features, is compact, but extends a long way. The black fruit is squeezy in this Big Beast Cornas, that bears black raisin, some brioche sweetness until the end grain enters – this resembles oak, but isn’t. The palate will need leaving until 2017 or 2018 – it is robust and demanding now, its deep-seated matter leading into a glowing end, which shows the strength of the vintage."
A great Bordeaux from a great vintage, here's Neal Martin's 2019 review in "Vinous" - "The 1990 Pichon-Baron is a sensational wine that must have had the First Growth rattled when it was released. At 28 years old, it is still reveling in its precocious growing season. The multidimensional bouquet features blackberry, graphite, cedar and mint flanked by iodine and warm gravel on a summer day. Wow! The palate is medium-bodied, delivering a mixture of red and black fruit, a fine mineral undercurrent and a long, precise finish: blackberry, cedar and graphite remain in the mouth for a good 60 seconds. Still a fabulous Pauillac after all these years."
Pontet Canet has become one of the very greatest of Bordeaux, rivalling or even surpassing the 1st Growths. One of the few estates in Bordeaux to practice organic and Biodynamic farming, these methods have led to a dramatic increase in quality. "The 2005 Pontet-Canet is a heady, exotic wine - inky dark fruit, mocha, chocolate, licorice, spice and tobacco are front and center." Give this a long decant if drinking now, it will be a great experience!
Ledru, Marie-Noelle NV Champagne Brut Grand Cru
A lesson in terroir from Marie-Noelle LeDru, a very small grower who farms just 6 hectares, mostly in Ambonnay (1 in Bouzy). Working very naturally in both the vineyards and the cellar, these micro-grower Champagnes are hand-riddled and disgorged and ferment naturally in stainless steel through malo. The Grand Cru Brut is predominately Pinot Noir, and this current offering is based on 2006 fruit it's both full and racy with ample red fruit. rsg
Bachelet, Denis 2007 Charmes-Chambertin Grand Cru
His Charmes Chambertin is the best of the Appellation. I quote from Allen Meadows, "...from a .44 hectare parcel of 90 + year old vines situated directly across from Chambertin: the yields are so low and the vines so exposed that Bachelet says that he always harvests this parcel first." This is one of the greatest wines of the Cote D'Or, one of the greatest wines in the World. jbt
Fourrier 2007 Gevrey Chambertin 1er Cru Clos St Jacques
Superstar! This is one of the 1er Crus that some think should be elevated to Grand Cru. Fourrier is one of the 5 producers of Clos St Jacques and one of the best. Red fruits primarily on the nose, it is very complex and multi-faceted with a very long finish. A great wine. These vines were planted in 1910.
Burghound writes — "A very Vosne nose is both seductive and highly spiced as are the very suave, round and fleshy middle weight flavors that culminate in a detailed, intense and mineral-inflected finish that, despite the richness of the mid-palate, is actually linear in shape at the present. This is really quite a nice villages and worth considering."
Jane et Sylvain 2016 Gevrey-Chambertin
From 45 to 60 year-old vines, certified organic, mostly in En Pallud (below 1er Cru les Corbeaux). The low yields and small berries of 2016 really show in this dense and well-structured Gevrey. The aromas are elegant and deep with chalky black raspberry and black cherry, the palate is dense and concentatrated with fabulous length of black fruits and minerals, Carafe many hours in advance if drinking now, best to cellar five years and drink until 2035+. This will be a superb mature Gevrey and is highly recommended.
Lafarge, Michel 2011 Volnay Vendanges Selectionnées
Volnay Vendange Selectionées comes from vines located below the village of Volnay. This wine is powerful and rich, and very similar to the Volnay AC but it is bigger and has more fruit. Medium bodied, red and black fruits, lots of minerality, good tension, and a long finish. JBT
