Sandri, Elio (Cascina Disa) 2019 Barbera d'Alba 1.5 L

A beautiful black cherry in color. The nose is generous, with exceptional plummy fruit and a charge of dark minerals leading to a waft of tannic black tea and dried roses. The palate is savory, with cherry fruit, salinity and a crunchy earthiness. Structure is high acid with an engaging chew. Another great wine from Elio Sandri! David Hatzopoulos

Offered today at a special low price!

Magnums usually cost more than double the price of a standard .750ml bottle; the glass bottle for a mag is considerably more expensive, and the bottling lines you will find at many small producers don't have the expensive equipment required to bottle (or label) mags, so the work is done by hand. Today's offer ignores the economics in favor of bringing you this festive format - and most delicious and festive wine - at a great price. Take another 10% off for any 12 bottles (1 mag = 2 bottles)!

Sandri, Elio (Cascina Disa) 2015 Barolo Riserva Perno

It was great to return to Barolo in the spring, and especially to catch up with Elio Sandri, A visit to Cascina Disa is a drawn-out event: Elio bottles 6 wines, but there are multiple vintages on hand, and different botte, different SO2  treatments, etc. We tasted 24 wines (I might say "only 24", because on some previous visits we have tasted 30+), and it was our first chance to taste the 2015 Riserva from bottle. The wine is spectacular. It's an affirmation of Elio's non-dogmatic but resolutely old school winemaking, and a stand-out example for 2015 (which is still somewhat overlooked). I found it highly aromatic (blood orange, mint, rose, balsam) and already showing beautiful balance on the palate, with great freshness and transparency. Given time to breathe, the wine is surprisingly seductive now, but will of course repay some years in the cellar - if you can keep your hands off. Jamie Wolff
