If you have taken anything more than a passing interest in wine over the last fifteen or so years, it is likely that you have heard of Rajat Parr. Originally from Calcutta, India, Rajat came to the U.S. to train as a chef. However he ended up bitten by the wine bug working under the great Larry Stone at Rubicon, where he rose first to sommelier and assistant wine director. From there he made his way to the Michael Mina group, and the rest is history. Over the last twenty years, he has established himself as one of the world's great sommeliers (he is a legendary blind taster) as well as a James Beard Award-winning author (with Jordan Mackay - The Secrets of the Sommelier) and a talented winemaker.
Rajat and his partner Sashi Moorman, one of the best and well-respected winemakers in California, have established themselves as leading lights in the most recent wave of Santa Barbara estates. In the last ten years, first with Sandhi and following that with Domaine de la Côte, they have produced some of the more brilliant wines in the region. Sandhi began in 2010, sourcing Chardonnay and Pinot Noir from the very best sites in SBC, including the legendary Sanford & Benedict vineyard. The wines (both white and red) are invariably tense and mineral driven, with little influence of new oak, and always expressive of their place of origin. At Domaine de la Côte, Rajat and Sashi took a different tack. In 2007 they purchased roughly 40 acres of hillside land in the Santa Rita Hills AVA and planted them entirely to Pinot Noir using selections based on some of the state's historic estates. Fifteen years later, the wines are among the most sought-after in California, pale in color but deeply aromatic and crackling with energy. We are excited to be able to present a deep field of older wines from both Sandhi and DDLC today.
However it doesn't stop there. In recent years, Raj has also established one of the best subscription wine clubs anywhere, drawing on his years of relationship building with talented growers up and down the coast. Today's offer includes wines from some truly exciting vineyards (just glancing at it, the Lime Kiln Mourvedre from Enz Vineyard and the Yount Mill Semillon jump out), all carrying Raj's seal of approval. All in all, everything available today is a glimpse into the career of one of this country's hardest working wine professionals. The wines in this offer were lovingly asembled by someone with a deep love of the new wave of California (and Oregon) growers, and was removed from professional storage. Sam Ehrlich
