Calling all Savoie fans! Please welcome bottles from Bruno "The Frangy Fermenter" Lupin back to the shelves of Chambers Street Wines!
Does this champ need an introduction? Unless you're new to the shop's newsletter, you should be familiar with the dazzling Rousette de Frangy cuvées that this experienced winemaker puts on the market. But what about his Mondeuse? We sold through the '19s in a flash. The arrival of the '20 vintage has been one of the most anticipated drops the year for me and other lovers of French Alpine wines. Well, ring the bells, scream it from the hilltops, and phone your friends: The 2020 Lupin Mondeuse has arrived! And wow... I mean, wow.
Immediately after opening, the first glass of Bruno Lupin's 2020 Mondeuse smells of plum and salt. Dashes of cinnamon and thick bundles of healthy grass hang above scents of slightly roasted almonds and sweet raspberry liquor. On the palate, there are distinct sparks of bitter black pepper and minerally graphite starting at the tip of the tongue and flashing backwards. The fruit is juicy and tart, tasting like wild cherries. Incredible acidity that beautifully contrasts the wine's soft but resilient tannic structure.
In the Savoie village of Frangy, not far from the border with Switzerland, Bruno organically tends a small site, roughly half a hectare, of 50-70 year old Mondeuse vines… hence the very limited quantity of bottles available. He has made a name for himself internationally with his white Altesse wines, labeled under the regionally specific title of Roussette de Savoie. The classic Roussette de Frangy, Lupin's bread and butter, is now on it's 2020 vintage and it's as perfect as it's ever been. Invigorating aromas and clean, vibrant flavors - you'll need this for your beach days, afternoon picnics, and evening seafood feasts.
Bruno Lupin's Rousette de Frangy 2020 is a clean lemon in color. On the nose, pungent white flowers, almost-ripe apricot and lime zest take firm charge. Beautiful and powerful. The palate bursts with oyster brine and lemon pulp above a tone of raw green tea that persists through the finish. High acidity, brisk minerality. Get ready to drink 12(+) bottles this summer!
We've also re-stocked Domaine Lupin's 2020 Cuvée Pépé Roussette de Frangy. If you're obsessed with Chablis - this Altesse should be the wine you drink next.
Oh, and dont' forget, the Mondeuse is partially aged in old DRC barrels... Let's see if you can taste it! David Hatzopoulos

Domaine Lupin 2020 Frangy Cuvee du Pepe
From Bruno Lupin's 60(+) year old Altesse vines behind the village of Frangy. Fermented naturally, low sulfur. The 2020 Cuvée Pépé is a clear lemon color in the glass. On the first night open, the nose shows firm aromas of yellow apple, underripe pineapple, banana candy, white pepper and flowers. After a night open, smells of anise, pine and eucalyptus appear. There is something smoky to it, but more woodsy than mineral and flinty. Persistent salt and pear on the palate, plus bitter herbs and lemon zest, with slightly more mature orchard fruit developing by day two. Pucker-inducing acidity vanishes on the tongue to leave a soft structure after each sip. The finish is a cool green tea, with a lingering mintiness. A boldly delicious wine, full of verve, it should show beautifully on day three. It promises to age like the 2015, and it should be hitting its stride in the next 5-10 years, maybe even later. Domaine Lupin 2020 Vin de Savoie Mondeuse
From half a hectare of 60-70 year old Mondeuse vines on the slopes of Frangy in the Savoie. Organically farmed grapes are fermented naturally in the Lupin cellar.
