As the weather tursn milder and the trees bloom we think of rebirth. Furthermore this floral and greening lushness has us thinking of Chenin Blanc and one bottle in particular from talented vigneron Eric Morgat. The 2016 Savennières Fidès is brimming with floral and sea air aromatics and honeyed fruit underlain by a finely-etched, sinewy mineral core derived from the schistous soils under the vines. The marriage of the charming fruit and vibrant acidity to the soil notes is startling.

Morgat hails from Coteaux du Layon across the river from Savennières. In 1995 at the tender age of 25, he returned from school and shortly thereafter purchased vines in Savennières, acquiring numerous parcels over the years. In 2012 he consolidated his holdings and bottled a cuvée from the remaining Chenin Blanc vines on schist called Fidès. Fermentation is in fiberglass tanks with native yeasts, and elevage in barrels before assemblage ahead of bottling. What makes Eric's wines distinctive is his manner of capturing the ripeness of the appellation without straying into overripeness. Where some Savennières can show more bruised or confited fruit character, Fidès always marries freshness to lushness, all the while possessing a porfoundly stony soil character. This equipoise is remarkable and consistent across vintages. And the 2016 is not to be missed!

This is a magnicent wine of terroir and will age magnificently. This is a prime candidate for cellaring. As an extra incentive beyond the sheer joy of drinking this, buy six bottles today and receive the case discount of 10%!!  John McIlwain

Morgat. Eric 2016 Savennières Fidès

Eric Morgat hails from Coteaux du Layon across the river from Savennières. In 1995 at the tender age of 25 he returned from school and shortly thereafter purchased vines in Savennières acquiring numerous parcels over the years. In 2012 he consolidated his holdings and bottled a cuvée  from the remaining vines on schist called Fidès. Fermentation is in fiberglass tanks with native yeasts, and aged in barrels before assemblage before bottling. The 2016 Fidès is positively crackling with energy and brightness, despite a vintage marked by frost and mildew pressures. The nose leaps from the glass with lush aromas of beeswax, Meyer lemon peel, white flowers, sea spray, and wet stone. The palate is electric on the attack with finely etched mineral cut and mouthwatering acidity, followed by waves of honeyed white and yellow stony fruits culminating on a stony, verging on saline finish. There is pinpoint balance between the ripeness, purity of fruit (no bruised apple here), and deep soil notes. This tension has analogs in Wachau grand crus or perhaps top flight premier cru Meursault, where that aromatic complexity and seemingly endless layers are of a piece. This is captivating and a Savennières that wears its ripeness and power brilliantly. Highly recommended.
